Getting back into HK cinema

Post by gasteropod »

I've started watching my old HKL's again, and starting to regret selling certain titles in the past when I was skint, thankfully I didn't sell many. Anyone else feeling in the mood for HK cinema just lately? Do you still watch your HKL's?

Not REALLY watching any HKL's lately, because I still have a bunch of other stuff I need to watch...
Would never sell any of them though. I'll rewatch them all some day.

Have you watched the newer HK movies, like Gallants, Ip Man the Legend Begins, etc etc?

Nope, they don't appeal to me really, I like the old raw stuff.

Does anyone know if the R4 Madman of New Dragon Gate Inn is the one to get? It seems like it might have the Cantonese, unless the listings are inaccurate.

I did watch Tiger Cage 2 last week. That was kinda old-skool. Stupid story, crappy acting, cringe-worthy 'comedy', but nice action...

Some excellent bootwork by a goofy looking Donnie Yen.

I finally got to see the Taiwanese cut of Black Mask last night, was pretty good but my God that turquoise tint is way over the top! For once the international studios had the right idea by removing that!

I've just watched The Blacksheep Affair, God that was rubbish! At least the final fight was all right, otherwise it would have been a complete waste of time. I shan't be watching it again, at least it was only £2.99 lol.

If you've seen as much trashy HK cinema as I have you'll soon accept that 'The Blacksheep Affair' isn't that bad.

Shu Qi's in it too. I didn't know the American title was "Another Meltdown". I thought it was supposed to be pretty good. Isn't the lead a good martial artist? I never bothered myself. I did use to own it on HKL DVD but sold it when I had a clear out a while back.

I've never read a good thing about it, which is why I never bought it back in the day when I used to buy HKL's all the time. The lead is good at martial arts, but the film is shite.

Blacksheep Affair is a solid actioner. to buy it and then sell it on without watching it is just dumbass.

I used to buy far more than I ever could find the time to watch. There are plenty of great films out there, to need to spend time with okay films. I've still got plenty of unwatched films.

yeah, but how do you know you didn't just sell a masterpiece? You didn't even watch the first 15 minutes.

In fairness you don't need to watch The Blacksheep Affair to know it's no masterpiece, not even the most ardent Shu Qi/Chiu Man Cheuk fanboy would claim it's even that good!

Exactly. Thanks Shing. You just know some films are going to be average, great, rubbish before seeing them. Sure you can be surprised but that's often a lot to do with expectations than the actual quality of the film.

Besides like I said, I've still got plenty of films to watch instead. So I'm supposed to not watch them and watch a turd, just so I can say "I've watched a turd"? That's Marklogic ;).

Again I'm willing to bet most of us here back in the earlier days of the HKL label used to buy their latest releases blind because their films were otherwise unavailable and they generally had a good track record for releasing worthy action films.

The Black Sheep Affair is a rather weak movie, and feels a lot older then something from 1998. Some good imagery and fights - the HKL trailer made it look like one of the greatest films ever!

I keep swaying from HK cinema - too many shoddy DVDs, the good ones are bland Shaw Brothers films. I still love old school indies and find a lot of the real treasures are the ones condemned to blurry pan and scan.

The main love is kinda dormant but some of my faves still really captivate me

Yeah I thought that too, it probably didn't help that it was an early title from HKL that hadn't even been remastered.

You sure? I didnt know that. All of the HKL's used to say Digitally restored and Remastered on them.
