The Howling (USA, 1981) – 2.5/5
Joe Dante’s somewhat dated werewolf film has some atmospheric parts and plenty of good special effects work. The film spends a considerable amount of time on telling a story that, in the end, isn't all the special. The werewolves also suffer from the usual genre problem – the hairy beasts look a little bit silly. A spicier mix of horror and laughs would probably have worked better.
Cannibal Apocalypse (Italy, 1980) – 3/5
Antonio Margheriti came a long way down from classic Italian horror (Danza macabre, 1964) to equally popular but less critically lauded Vietnam and zombie-cannibal movies. Cannibal Apocalypse combines the fore-mentioned genres by featuring cannibalism as an infectious virus that makes its way from the Vietnam jungles to the streets of Atlanta. For a film of this genre Cannibal Apocalypse is relatively strong on technical areas: the acting is good, and there’s even a bit of attempt for storyline and social commentary. Gorehounds may come out a bit disappointed, though, as the graphic shootouts and cannibalism are rather sparse. The film can’t quite keep up the suspense it builds during the first 45 minutes, but the straight forward action finale is nevertheless satisfying enough.

Samuel Bayer is actually a pseudonym for Paul W.S. Anderson.romerojpg wrote:It was total and utter dog shit. The original I am no big fan of, but at least it was charming and fun at times - the remakes bile of the highest order in every single way, not one thing good about it.

My memory is becomming increasingly short, but I don't recall any animal cruelty. Possibly a couple of rats getting stamped over in the sewer scene, maybe even accidentally burned since one guy had a flame thrower... But if you're talking about detailed animal splatter, no, there isn't anything like that. I think most of the film was shot in US so that alone should set some limitations for the crazy macaroni bastards.Markgway wrote:Any animal cruelty in Cannibal Apocalypse?
Edit: a couple of flame thrower casualties in a shot that lasts about 3 seconds. Might have survived, though. The stuntman possibly took more damage than the rats did.

Thanks. Sounds like I'd be able to sit thru this one.HungFist wrote:My memory is becomming increasingly short, but I don't recall any animal cruelty. This brought Cannibal Holocaust to my mind. Not a film I'd recommend to Mark (although keep in mind the US version does offer animal cruelty free version, so if you can ignone what they did, you can, well ignore it easier by using this option). But I would argue Cannibal Holocaust is, animal splatter aside, quite a good film. Even today it's timely and the social commentary adds interest value to it (even if you'd consider it pretentious and contadictionary, I think it's more interesting to watch a film that is saying something than a film that doesn't say anything at all). For all the cruelty the film displays, the soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful. Been listening to the tracks on youtube while doing school assignments.

Buried: 4/5
Had no idea how they'd manage to make an hour and a half film out of someone being trapped in a coffin, but they did it, and it wasn't boring! Check it out.

guys, it would be better if you used spoiler tags. Just mentioning there's a surprising ending takes away most of the surprise.

The whole film is one surprise from scene to scene
not the ending.

The poster tells you as much as Gas did Hung. I've not seen it but that's basically the synopsis.

Brad, Gas said there's a surprise ending in the film. Now, that is a nasty spoiler. Maybe normally I would have gone see it and never suspect there might be anything surprising at the end. But now I've been told there's a surprise ending, so it loses most of its effect when I know something is coming
right, I have mod rights. Censorship applied (where's the Hitler icon...???)

No I didn't you fool, it was Romero! Madness. Both of my comments were intentionally vague, and my second one was merely responding to Romero.

Saying there is a "surprise ending" is really vague - come on.

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out
How can it be suprising if you knew something was coming? Besides, if you know there will be a suprise at the end, you can usually figure it out long before the end. Like in The 6th Sense. If you knew there's a twist at the end, you could guess it already during the first 20 minutes. But if you don't know there's a twist coming, then it may actually take you by a surprise.grim_tales wrote:Saying there is a "surprise ending" is really vague - come on.

This is the first mention of the 'surprise' ending. And Hung, if you now know what the ending is due to Romero and I explaining it in intricate detail, would you mind telling us what it is please? I'm pretty sure I was wondering all the way through the film 'how the hell is this going to end?', and that's without it being 'spoilt' by anyone.romerojpg wrote:I liked the end myself, Heard people moan about it - the fools!
