I prefer the look of the R0 Universe as its more colourful.

Yeah the R2 looks too desaturated, also has interlacing artefacts on the first film cap.

It has interlacing on more than just the first cap :D but yet the colourful version wins for me, just feels warmer and none of them evil lines.#

Still I was going to go Blu Ray on this, god only knows how that turns out then.

Probably desaturated but with no interlacing problems.

the first pre-dvd screener that was knocking about of this had a similar desaturated look to it.

Universe - first few caps are horribly oversaturated (I've never seen Chinese look so yellow) but given the clear shift in later caps this may be a deliberate style choice? If you only looked at the last few caps the this would be the winner.

CineAsia - comparitively pale and washed out thanks to too much desaturation that appears to affect the whole film. Also it's interlaced (a poor show in 2009) and possibly a smidgen softer (though the Universe looks edge-enhanced/artificial).

Both look soft, R2 is too desaturated, so I'll just stick to my DVD-bootleg untill someone releases a proper version.

I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...

I've just remembered I was supposed to post grabs from the UK BD to match those of the HK release over at AsianBluRayGuide, completely forgot about that. I may do so later in the week, but tbh the difference in colour is pretty much the same as what you see in the DVD grabs above.

Yeah I do heavily suspect that the HK disc is way over-saturated, the only two recent HK films I've seen on HK BD also have a highly saturated look (Connected and Shinjuku Incident). The question is whether directors in HK are going for a colourful look or are DVD/BD masterers boosting up the colours.

UK is NTSC>PAL.

There is an Aussie edition which according to the running time at a site, would be genuine PAL. It could also have re-translated subtitles?

DVD review of the Well Go USA edition, including a comparison between it and the Cine-Asia DVD. Looks like we have a winner.

What about the blu-ray? Where NTSC to PAL shouldn't be an issue. I'll likely get the UK Blu-ray. What with the awful Pound to USD or HKD.

The Cine Asia BD is correct at 1080p/24.

I believe that Well Go used the same print and subs so the discs should be pretty similar.

Added screen caps from the R1 release. Will add subtitle samples once I get back the UK disc.

R1 is the best.

The R2 is the poorest.

I wonder how the Blu Rays compare?

I have the Well Go USA BD and the skin tones aren't as orange as my old Universe dvd but it looks correct. In an early scene where Ip Man is having a smoke with an opponent theres a shot showing the back of Donnie's head. On the Universe it looks like he has a big bald spot on his head. That is less apparent on the new BD. Also, the Well Go USA version has this classic look to it while the Universe looks more contemporary.

Looks great! I had actually called Well Go USA asking about it a month or so ago.

However, DVD Beaver (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDRevie ... lu-ray.htm) were critical of it.

Would be good if Beaver threw the Cine Asia into the mix.
