According to the Bey Logan commentary, apart from the bits of violence removed, the one scene thats copletely missing is a sing-off between Fong Sai Yuk and Tiger Liu. Unfortunately I've never seen the uncut version so I'm not sure what he's talking about.eon wrote:Wikipedia has some of the cut details:

The Dragon Dynasty version is missing the same bit missing from the Dimension release - FSY's mum having her hair caught on fire when FSY is curling her hair.
All those scenes listed in the Mainland China release are missing too - though I think that's the only version with those scenes intact.

It's as described at Wikipedia, where Fong tests Tiger Liu's patience. They both sing at each other whilst banging objects early in the morning, to everyone's annoyance.DangerousLeeHandsome wrote:According to the Bey Logan commentary, apart from the bits of violence removed, the one scene thats copletely missing is a sing-off between Fong Sai Yuk and Tiger Liu. Damn I'd forgotten about that scene as well (the banging of the objects), but now I remember it quite well... still, even with those cuts, I still prefer the DD release to my Universe Laser "re-mastered" release.

Digression...
Sam, does your BD of Tai Chi Master have the same field blending flaw as Cine Asia's Fist of Legend?

It happens at various points throughout, but check out the opening fight at the Japanese university, when a student's head is slammed into the teacher's desk and when Jet kicks away the chair so that the Black Dragon thug falls thru the desk. If you can't see it in play try frame by frame. I just want somone else to confirm it so I know I'm not mental.

A blending flaw on the FOL BD? Care to elaborate on what a blending flaw actually means? I seem to recall going through the classroom fight frame-by-frame and spotted no significant flaws. Are you saying it's got the same problems as the DD DVD, or are you talking about a single frame being distorted, like the print was torn and stuck back together crudely (as I recall spotting one or two dodgy frames like that).

I checked the table smash bit and I think I see what you're talking about now, it's actually ghosting in about 3 or 4 frames. IIRC it happens during the fight between the two schools later on in the film as well, again just a small number of frames. I can't notice it at all in motion on my projector, I wonder if it's more noticeable on a LCD with all the various Hz modes they have.

That's above my technical pay grade...Shingster wrote:A blending flaw on the FOL BD? Care to elaborate on what a blending flaw actually means? I just got the term from discussions on the Dragon Dynasty DVD's flaws.
There are many occasions throughout the movie (not just one or two) where two individual frames blend together. It looks a bit like interlacing when you pause/step but is more noticeable in motion. Like a stutter. I haven't seen the DVD but what I saw sounds like what fans were complaining about.
I have an LCD so that maybe a factor.Shingster wrote:I checked the table smash bit and I think I see what you're talking about now, it's actually ghosting in about 3 or 4 frames. It also happens during Jet's demolition of the Black Dragon school amongst others.

I should also say I can't spot it at all in motion in Virtualdub as well, I don't detect any stutter no matter how many times I play it, very odd. I also wonder if this ties into the fact Cine-Asia's Blu-rays run at 24fps rather than 23.976?
The Tai-chi master release should be the key as that was the release were people really noticed issues in the DVD transfer.

How does that work? Aren't the films telecined at 24fps or am I being nieve?

Nope, it just makes sense to round it up to 24 when referring to it.

How can you tell if they run at 23.976 or 24?

I don't know if any players or TVs tell you (mine don't) but I presume some computer software will. Bear in mind that the majority run at 23.976 Hz and it's a few anomalies that don't, usually coming from small companies.

Still I thought the issue should be brought to attention for those who assumed the UK disc was A-OK.
At least Cine Asia used (fixed) subtitles.
Worryingly Cine Asia opted not to put out a Blu Ray here. The Tai-chi master release should be the key as that was the release were people really noticed issues in the DVD transfer.
We know Dragon Dynasty are less fussy stateside.

Re: Fong Sai-Yuk Dimens. R1 Vs D. Dyn. R1 Vs Universe Remast
Cine-Asia are Dragon Dynasty as far as Blu-ray is concerned, as their distribution deal pretty much makes them the UK wing of the company. Not sure why TCM was pulled, I assume it's down to either rights or DD deciding they wanted to release it first, so maybe it will eventually work its way over here.
Saying that though we are talking around 1-5 (or maybe more in other scenes) frames in a transfer that shows 24 frames per second, so the blurring during motion which already has inherent blurring should not be THAT noticeable, which makes me wonder if it's only a major issue on LCD TVs which can look horribly blurry when it comes to interlaced material (I can't tell you how much better interlaced transfers look on my projector compared to friends' LCDs). I would have thought at least one of the geeks over on AsianDVDGuide and whatnot are still watching on a CRT though!
I should point out I have only looked at that classroom fight though, not gone through the other scenes. I can't be arsed to right now because I have 2 big and 1 ickle BD reviews to work on over the coming week! Ozu titles as well, bleedin' hard work. When I've shifted them I'll return to FOL and amend The Digital Fix review.Markgway wrote:Hmm... It's beyond me.
