The Grand Master (WKW's Ip Man movie)

Post by Yi-Long »

Just read on monkeypeaches.com that the korean actress Song Hye-Gyo is probably in the movie. :)

Also in the movie are obviously Tony Leung as Ip Man, Zhang Ziyi as his wife, and apparantly Gong Li will also be in the movie.
The site even mentions that there is a slight possibility that Brigitte Lin will join the cast.

Monkeypeaches is still alive and running? Man, is it still full of spyware and viruses, because I stopped visiting that site a long time ago, even though it used to be the best Asian movie news site.

I have spybot and AVG running, and didn't get any messages. Still running, but like you, I stopped visiting regularly a long time ago. Was bored and decided to give it a look for any news on new movies. :)

Good newssite though, for HK/mainland action movies.

Top cast; let's just hope WKW reigns in his tendancies toward the prententious.

ZZ as Tony's wife? She's young enough to be his daughter though Tony is a great actor.
I thought Brigitte Lin retired?

Her last appearance was at the Golden Horse Awards ceremony in December 2008.

I posted this on a french forum in April 2009:
Brigitte Lin has reportedly decided her return will be with Wong Kar Wai in an adaption of 'The Eternal Yin Hsueh-yen' (aka The Eternal Snow Beauty). Filming won't begin until 2010 after Grand Master Yip Man is completed, Tony Leung wishes to participate.

Taiwanese writer Pai Hsien-yung previously said: "Brigitte Lin is my old friend. She has always wanted to act in movies or dramas adapted from my stories such as 'The Eternal Yin Hsueh-yen', 'A Touch of Green' and etc. I've extended my invitations in the past, but she was unable to take up the offer and it was much regretted.

The story :
The Eternal Snow Beauty (永遠的尹雪豔)
The aging "Snow Beauty" (Yin Hsueh-yen) looks back on her days as the belle of Shanghai's Paramount ballroom; she is still the center of attention at upscale mahjong soirees she arranges at her Taipei home.
Brigitte is back !

It's already happened in 2046 remember. It's more natural for a woman to go for an older man, than visa versa.

I'm really looking forward to this. I even liked My Blueberry Nights. I wish Maggie Cheung would be in his films again though. Possibly a stupid question but does this mean it will have martial arts?

Between what I read on the "films you never seen review thread" and this, it seems people like to use clichés ;) . I've read Zhang Ziyi should replace Brigitte Lin who was intended for the role first. I don't care about Ziyi's age, the most important is her acting level, and she's usually great.

I don't know, but Tony Leung broke his left arm in July during training whith his martial art coach.

How it is a cliché? It's common for women to like older men and often men like younger women. I don't per se but many do.

Saying it's natural means it's a norm or that older women with younger men is not normal.

Neither in my opinion :), but anyway, it's not important.

Loads more info here:

http://www.wongkarwai.net/forums/viewto ... 8&start=75

It looks like Zhang Ziyi will play Ip Man's wife (the link above says, she asked for a larger role). Originally it was to be Bridget Linn, who may still appear. It'll be interesting to see how this compares to the Wilson Yip version. I'm guessing Wong-Kar Wai's version will be much more lyrical.

I for one am really looking forward to this. WKW hasn't made a feature length film since the (underrated) My Blueberry Nights.

Is it Ip Man or Yip Man btw?

They were lovers in 2046 remember.

Both Ip and Yip are correct. It's a matter of preference. For a long time Yip was used but apparently the family now prefers Ip.
