World Cup Prediction game

Post by degeneration »

Am reasonably bored and got this idea from a billboard advert I saw.

Predict who will win, lose or draw each game in the world cup to win $100million - or at least that was the advert.

Instead of $100m, as I don't have that much money, I'll chuck in a copy of Barking Dogs Don't Bite to the winner!

For the game play, there are 15 days worth of group stages, these will be split into three sets of 5 days worth of games, so people can adjust opinions of teams as we go along.

In each set's fixture list put the team you think will win in bold or leave both in normal font for a draw (this is to make awarding points easier) - and put your prediction of the score after the fixture.

1 point awarded for predicting a win/lose or draw correctly.
2 points awarded for predicting correct score.

Simples.

--------------------------------------------------------
1st set: Fixtures for 11th June - 15th June. 14 matches.

Blank template for people to copy and paste...

South Africa v Mexico
Uruguay v France
South Korea v Greece
Argentina v Nigeria
England v USA
Algeria v Slovenia
Serbia v Ghana
Germany v Australia
Netherlands v Denmark
Japan v Cameroon
Italy v Paraguay
New Zealand v Slovakia
Ivory Coast v Portugal
Brazil v North Korea
-------------

My entry:
South Africa v Mexico 1-2
Uruguay v France 2-2
South Korea v Greece 1-0
Argentina v Nigeria 3-1
England v USA 2-1
Algeria v Slovenia 1-1
Serbia v Ghana 0-2
Germany v Australia 3-1
Netherlands v Denmark 2-0
Japan v Cameroon 2-2
Italy v Paraguay 3-0
New Zealand v Slovakia 1-3
Ivory Coast v Portugal 1-2
Brazil v North Korea 4-0

Uruguay has Suarez. No way they're gonna lose to France with zero goals to their name. Suarez has a chance to become the sensation of the tournament. Brilliant brilliant player, and absolutely one of the players to watch these few weeks.

Holland-Denmark will be a walkover for us. We've got so many great players, all in top form. Even without Robben we have Vd Vaart, Van Persie, Sneijder, Van Bommel, Vd Wiel, Kuyt, Afellay, and a bunch of other pretty damn good players. And unlike earlier years, we now actually have a very good coach.

I'm not saying we'll be world champions, but we should be able to end on top of the group, and after that, it just comes down to luck and the form of the day, so anything can happen.

I hardly know all the other teams. I just know France has been shite lately and Uruguay has the fantastisc Suarez, so I see France losing (perhaps a big loss even).

And as long as everyone in the Holland-team keeps getting along, they will have the chance to win the tournament. We have a very talented and eager team right now.

My dumb-ass predictions:

South Africa v Mexico
Uruguay v France
South Korea v Greece
Argentina v Nigeria
England v USA
Algeria v Slovenia
Serbia v Ghana
Germany v Australia
Netherlands v Denmark
Japan v Cameroon
Italy v Paraguay (draw)
New Zealand v Slovakia
Ivory Coast v Portugal
Brazil v North Korea

I won't be predicting scores, cause that's just ridiculous. I just predict winners and losers, and if I've got 2/3rd of them right, I will have done ok ;)

Yeah, but the next three of my predictions were duds.

France has great players, but a shit team.
I underestimated South Korea (or overestimated Greece depending on your view)
Argentina underperformed (though they still won).

That was a howler...

I like how when he almost made another - when he fumbled it and the ball hit off the post - the commentators said "great save". WTF?

Apart from the silly goal, IMO we werent actually that bad, and USA weren't bad either. They're probably the 2nd best team in the group and beat Spain and almost Brazil recently.
It is kinda disappointing after the early goal though.
We'll scrape through and then go out on pens - DOOM!! :icon_suspect:

Oh well, I'm sure the Scotts will be doing MUCH better...

Wait!? What!? Oh, they didn't qualify!? Oh, they only won 10 points out of 8 matches!?!? Huh!? They LOST to Macedonia!?!? They're all at home, beating their hairy wifes and illegitimate children over the head with a dead sheep!? :?

Aw, that's a shame(!) :D

Anyway, Holland were pretty poor today. Luckily, judged by the last few years, we can play much much better than we did today, and we have good players on the bench like Elia and Afellay and Robben, to make a difference when needed.

Sorry, but why does EVERY single criticism of - well, anything - have to end up with the piss being taken out of Scotland. Not just the team but the country. I made a remark about how poor the Dutch football team were (which they were) and Yi-Long responds with the same old sheep and wife-battering jokes. It's tired and offensive. I know Scotland are shit. It's seems so far in this World Cup they have plenty company.
