Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ... pheww....
.... that was something...
Just finished watching it for the for the first time, and I'm pretty much blown away by it. First of all, how in FUCK's name didnt Carrey even get nominated!? That's just incredible. I've always thought he was a great actor, but this performance was amazing. Winslet was nominated, but also didnt win. I think she could have won though. She was great as well. Pretty much the whole cast was flawless actually...
Anyway, back to the movie: what a emotional bombshell. It just hits so many points that most of us have dealt with: true love, fights, wanting to start over, forgetting everything, losing someone, missing someone ...
It reminded me of all kinds of stuff in my own life (ofcourse), so it was at times pretty painfull to sit through. Yet there was no way ofcourse that I would have turned it off, cause the movie is just too goddamn good.
The last movie that made me feel this way was In the mood for Love I guess...
Anyway, how did you guys experience this movie!?

I had read reviews about it, and heard other people being very positive about it, so I had a basic idea of what it was about, but it still exceeded all my expectations. I actually wanna see it again right away, but I really should be doing my homework... :'(
Anyway, I'm glad I watched this by myself on DVD, instead of in the cinema, cause it was very hard to watch at times (yeah I cried -sniff- I'm still cool... I am I am... really!
)
Grim: your mother doesn't like these kind of stories!? It's weird, my girlfriends mother also ONLY likes hard action flicks and horror flicks. Most other movies she turns off cause they're 'boring'. I do feel some movies you will only get if you are familiar with certain kinds of experiences/emotions, like the Wong Kar Wai movies.
Some people find Days of Being Wild a huge bore, and the main character an asshole, while personally I feel he's a lot like me in some ways, so I understand his actions better ...
I kinda wonde rif my girlfriend will 'get' the movie. First of all I think she's just fall asleep as usual while watching it, but even if she does finish the whole thing, I wonder if she 'connects' with it.
I'm her first boyfriend, and the first guy she really 'loves' , so she hasnt really experienced 'loss' yet, although I'm sure she's affraid of it ... so it could hit her from a different direction then it does me, as in fear. Ah well... we'll see...

My mum is like that with WKW movies too Yi, she didnt like ITMFL much (to be fair she's never seen a WKW film before), or even the classic Groundhog Day (!) How can you NOT like Groundhog Day?
My mum thought ITMFL was slow and boring and unrealistic (?), and for her that was the end of the story.
When I saw it I found it a "bit" slow, but could still appreciate the performances, music etc
I gave up trying to tell her that it was a) the 1960's, and b) HK so was realistic.

(We really need some better/more smilies here on this board...)
How can anyone NOT like GHD!?!? Can you give us a list of her favourite movies, just so we can kinda figure out her (lack of) taste??
I have no idea why anyone would call it 'pretentious'. Maybe some people call everything they don't 'get' pretentious. I never got the feeling they were rubbing anything in, or were over-acting or over-using camera-tricks or whatever. It was just perfect. Exactly the right cast, the right sounds, visions, story, etc etc.

I saw ESOTSM in the cinema, knowing a very little about it (just the teaser trailer/advert for the company that erase the people's minds), and I thought it was brilliant! Once of the best and most original films i had seen that year.
I actually thought CArrey was an annoying, over-rated actor before this, and that he should just stick ot things like Mask cause he is suited to that sort of role. But in this he hsowed me that he could actually really act, and act very vyer well!! (Not seen Truman Show).

Ow man you should definately check out The Truman Show.Very good movie and again a very good performance by carrey. I don't really like Man on the Moon though, and havent seen The Majestic, which also has him doing serious acting... but heard it's a feel-good drama or whatever, and wasn't received too well in the reviews...degeneration wrote:I saw ESOTSM in the cinema, knowing a very little about it (just the teaser trailer/advert for the company that erase the people's minds), and I thought it was brilliant! Personally, I don't really like the cheap humour in USA movies, but in most cases I cant blame Carrey for not liking the movie, as he's usually perfect. I like Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura and Liar Liar though...
Really wanna see Bruce Almighty as well...
...now let me check out those extra 800 smilies (found them!) :pottytrain5: ...

I thought it was pretty straight-forward and boring. More like a TV-movie then an actual movie. Jim was very good in it yeah, but I didnt really have much sympathy for his character, thus couldnt really care much about the movie itself...gasteropod wrote:I love Man on the Moon. Jim Carrey's performance is incredible on that.
