UK Digital Economy Bill - Here in 2 weeks!

Post by bradavon »

Scary stuff: http://www.techradar.com/news/networkin ... ill-677111

They're fighting a losing battle stopping Peer-to-Peer networking (i.e - BitTorrent, Usenet, Limewire, eDonkey etc...) now and this is just ridiculous!

Bollocks! Apparently 20,000 people complained but since when did the Government listen to the public? I also read, so few MPs actually bothered to turn up to vote, clearly they didn't see it as important.

The question is, why this actually amount to anything or will we be in for some shit times ahead?

It's a lot, lot higher than the average.

Have you even read what the bill is about? Check out the Tech Radar link above. It's about way more than just illegal downloading you moron. It's "supposed" to be about illegal downloading but the wording is so woolly, it could even be used to take down Google (in theory at least).

That's unlikely to happen but basically any website "thought" to be hosting illegal copyrighted content, can be forced to be taken down. It even looks like they don't need much evidence. Not all the websites we love are as big as Google. What about people illegal stealing your wifi too? Encryption only goes so far.

Besides there are thousands of rare tracks/live material, you simply cannot get hold of any other way.

I wouldn't even bother Brad, having a cogent discussion with romero on this subject is about as feasible as raping a lion. :icon_suspect:

Yeah and over the top scare mongers spreading bullshit that "Could" happen (even if it is a one in a billion chance of it happening) to deflect from what it is 99.99% about (Illegal downloading!), have no fear of getting done for lion rape, as they are dickless.

If Labour stay in power Mandelson should give Romero a job as their mouthpiece for this ridiculous legislation.

@ Salty and Shingster: True :D.

I completely agree with O2 here, who're basically saying "instead of trying to flog a lame duck, realise the old music business model, no longer works (in the numbers they want it to) and instead of hurting your fans, come up with new business models":

http://www.techradar.com/news/world-of- ... act-682496

Companies like Spotify have shown, if you innovate, you will thrive. Incidentally statistically, people who download illegal content buy "more" legal content than those who don't. It was one of the facts that Panorama documentary stated.

Stephen Fry on File Sharing (and the future of Twitter):

http://www.techradar.com/news/world-of- ... ?artc_pg=2

Exactly:

""To say that illegal filesharing should not be curbed would obviously be ridiculous, but there are levels of illegal filesharing, and there are ways of tackling it," Fry argues.

"The option is not either everything for free, or you seal everything up tight. What we're arguing about is that somewhere along this continuum is where the majority of people sit. And all I would say is: look at it from their point of view.

"Twenty years ago we were making compilation tapes on cassette. Did music die? No. It was the 70s, when everything through prog rock to punk happened. It was an explosive and creative time for music. What happened is that we went through the normal changes everyone goes through. You start earning a bit of money, and you start buying CDs. That's the journey most of us take. They're just seeing them as a potential enemy or customer – that's it. I find that insulting; we're people." "

Do you mean you record off TV? If so, I'm not sure how comparable that is. They've never been too worried with us doing that. At least not on SD, HD they can restrict it.

Stats are Hilariously messed with to keep in line with what they want to proove depending on which side wants to say what, we will rarley ever get a real workd set of stats. Mind you Panorama was hilarious to watch scaremongering the masses :D

Pretty much everyone I know downloads anything they want all the time, I would say mainly music, pretty much none of them buy much of anything. Their actual bought collections are tiny. The only time normal Joes ever buy a thing is when it is a special time, like Xmas or a Birthday etc.. The few people I know who download the most and leave the PC on 24 hours a day downloading everything known to man, buy nothing ever apart from unhackable/tricky stuff like console games where its not worth the bother.

One hilariously nasty fact for you

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 PC version Sold 300,000 copies

Downloads, fully downloaded from the main few torrent sites for the PC version Over 4 MILLION

I still say if you are illegally downloading and you get your net cut off, so what? you did it, you know you are doing wrong (unless you are a total moron), you may well get a letter telling you that you may be cut off and are doing wrong, you are twat is you keep doing it and deserve everything that comes to you.
No law is in palce yet to do jack shit, we all know it wont be arond for ages (or enforced), but still idiots who download everything like it is their god given right of mankind, well they are wankers to even complain about getting wrong in any way. I can imagine many of them crying like little girls if they were even told off by anyone.

Just like Dicks who speed all the time in cars, they should have their cars took off them and crushed, then they could not speed anymore and break the law.

Like Sam, I still buy loads of DVDs and Blu Rays; and some CDs, as I'm more a movie guy than a music guy (although I actually bought a CD today). If I like something I'll pay for the privilage of owning a legal copy, factory pressed and with artwork. But I have no problem with watching DVD-Rs. The BPI and the record companies still don't get it. If you try to rip the public off with over-inflated prices don't be surprised if they rebel by downloading. The most downloaded artists (the ones who supposedly lose millions in sales) are the ones who get paid millions; the executives who complain loudest are the ones who get the biggest cut of the profits. It's all about the money and rather than combat illegal downloads by reducing prices in shops to something fairer and more managable, they'll try to go after the downloaders. Anything but compromise with their six and seven figure salaries. Do I feel guilt over these massive conglomerates who would fuck the public in the ass if they thought it would make them an extra buck? Not in the slightest.

Yeah thats what I meant. I didnt know they can restrict it on HD though.
I don't have a problem with DVD-R's IF it's stuff you can't get elsewhere, eg I have Beauty and the Beast (properly framed) and some rare cartoons (of varying quality), but theyre never shown on TV.
