Seems to be something to do with motion blur?

I haven't seen it myself.

But if Shingster hasn't mentioned it it might not be an issue with the BD?

So are you talking about the DD DVD then Chen? I've already confirmed that stuttering/blurring frame problems are not there on the BD (unless somone else on another board is saying they are there on the BD?). I also think it's a gross exagerration to claim the BD subs are sub-standard either, for the vast majority of the film they say the same thing as the fansubs only with slightly protracted wording. I've not gone through the subs on the DD DVD completely yet but from what I checked the BD subs are almost the same but the BD translation appears to have been tweaked slightly.

Shingster wrote:Watched the film now and I have to say that the transfer really is quite nice, easily the best the film has looked on Home Video and free of any stuttering.
My very first comment on the BD, I;ve been calling it stuttering bcause I always thought the problem on the DD (at least how Gil originally described it) was that every now and then when a scene changes from one shot to the next, the subsequent shot starts with a stuttering of frames which makes the action look blurry.

If they're not there, that's fine.

It's just because they're both derived from the same source, I wondered.

Well, I do know some Cantonese and Mandarin, where as you know some Japanese  .

By sub-standard, it isn't great compared to standards set by HKL or Tai Seng's re-translations. I provided a handful of examples with an explanation, highlighting both good and bad. I could go through the whole thing actually, but maybe at a later point, it would be better if I could do a thorough comparison between all the DVDs.

The thing is, the extras always have the best quality subtitles. It's the film that's weirdly been the one with problems.

Yeah, from what you provided me, DD provided an improved set featuring the ending (with the "Tungshan" error though). It's certainly not terrible like other titles I've seen, but they do need improvement.

Been going through the Blu-ray frame-by-frame, taking screengrabs etc for the past 3hrs now and I'm at the Li-Kurata fight right now and it's suddenly hit me why there's consistency in colour/skintones/etc from shot-to-shot: Obviously it took them days to film the fight and the weather is noticeably sunnier on some days than others (at the start of the fight the weather is downcast, but much sunnier later on) also there's the quality of light each day as they reach the end of shooting for the day, etc.

This leads me to think (having not seen it in motion) that perhaps the Dimension DVD had a more extensive colour remaster applied to it and they could have levelled the colours from shot-to-shot in various scenes and hence why I feel that some of the Dimension grabs I see in salty's DVD comparison are oversaturated (overly green soldier uniforms, overly yellow dried grass, etc). The question would then be which would you prefer: A rawer presentation where colours may fade and skintones vary in certain scenes but the transfer is perhaps closer to the original theatrical presentation, or a more remastered release that balances out the colours and presents something smoother for home video?

Good points. Personally, I'd take Dimension over the raw presentation.

So, the Cine Asia Fist of Legend BD is 1080p 24fps, yes? And we can assume DD will have the same on their BD?

Pros: 1080p, 24fps, Cantonese mono, Half-decent subs, Relatively uncut.

Cons: English credits, missing final shot, only half-decent subs.

The only difference I think there could be is that IF CineAsia are responsible for the subtle changes to the English subtitles (ie: No reverting to dubtitles towards the end of the film) then it's very likely that the Dragon Dynasty release will have the same subs as on their DVD release. It's also possible that the Dragon Dynasty could have a higher bitrate encode and perhaps the framerate will be 23.976fps rather than the 24fps of the CineAsia (not sure this means anything in motion though).

OK I've created a comparison thread for the CineAsia BD, Dragon Dynasty DVD, and HKVideo releases here. Sadly I do not own the Dimension DVD as I would've been interested in how the colours of the BD compare to it.

Pretty useless review on the DVD side of things, doesn't address the issues fans want to know about ie: frame/blurring problems and the mono track being a downmix - in fact, call me cynical but it doesn't read like he even bothered to listen to the Cantonese mono track.

From afar, the image seems to look terrific, but I'd rather wait for a review here or something. Like 'FOL', Dimension has (in my opinion) better colours (viewtopic.php?f=19&t=4737).

There could be a chance DD corrected the downmix on Cine-Asia and maybe improved the subtitles? Maybe even a better HD transfer that could improve colours and rid of the frame-problem. The one thing that I don't think will be fixed is the English dub, although that probably won't matter to many.

The one thing the DVD did lack is the Hong Kong trailer.

If you do a review of 'TCM' Shing, I can provide info if you want?

I decided not to cover it because I'm primarily a BD reviewer now seeing as I'm one of the few DVDTimes reviewers with a BD player, and I had BDs of Fist of Legend, Kill Zone, Law Abiding Citizen, a Naruto DVD Boxset and the upcoming Evangelion 1.1 BD release to cover around the timeframe I would have reviewed TCM. They did send us a DVD review copy a couple of weeks back but I think its destined to remain on the unclaimed pile.

Invisible Target passed by the BBFC with an uncut '15'.

Some extras passed for "The Legend of Fong Sai Yuk".

Abridged version with additional 1 sec cut for horse tripping.

Epic fail, as they say.
