Will have about a week in Tokyo, anyone have experience of shopping/visiting?
My dream would of course be an 1980's style shrine to Jackie, Sammo and Yuen Biao - out of the question?

I don't know about Laserdiscs or HK movies, but I do have some dvd shopping experience from Tokyo. Naturally you wanna stay away from HMV, Kinokuniya and the likes, unless you want to shop new releases at full price. Instead head to the second hand stores where you can find out of print discs for good prices.
My favourite store is Recomints in Nakano Broadway. Take the Chuo Rapid line from Shinjuku Station. It's only about 4 min ride. Nakano isn't covered by tourist maps but that's no problem, the Broadway is right next to the station. Look for an alley that behind behind the parking lot. The Broadway is at the end of that alley. Recomints has several stores in the building, so be sure to find the live action dvd store (F3 I think).

There's a few in Shinjuku too. One is a bit front / left from the front of the station, close to a Pachinko.

In Akihabara you can find several second hand stores. "Trader" has many stores in the area. A few of them are on the big main street, usually located around 4th or 5th floor. Usually there's anime in the first few floors, then live action, the AV in then 6th and 7th floor.

A good tip: if you can't read katakana, memorize the following two words. Saves you a lot of time, as often you can't tell from the outside what kind of dvds the specific store is selling... unless you can read of course.
Adult eli アダルト (a-da-ru-to)
Anime eli アニメ (a-ni-me)

And don't forget to visit Maid Cafe

And eat sushi in kaiten sushi restaurant

That's wonderful help, I can't thank you enough!!
The second hand stores sound good as I'll be looking for some Japan exclusive CD's too.
Thanks once again!!

HungFist your advice was *really* helpful on holiday. Not only is Japan one of the most exciting places in the world to visit, it has THE most intense shopping experience I've ever known
We visited Akihabara a couple of times and found it very overwhelming!! The highlight being getting dinner in a charmingly basic restaurant in a nearby backstreet (very tired, very hungry!). The AV (I mean CD and DVD not pr0n) selection was incredible and I'm really surprised to be honest that my girlfriend didn't leave me after the 500th shop we went in
I saw the Maids Cafe but didn't venture in...although we passed 10 or so girls in costume around the area handing out cards
In amongst the mountains of porn retailers we dropped into a Book Off store and I bought as many 80's movie programs for 200yen each I could fit in my suitcase - that was on top of about 60 CD albums and a couple DVD's.
Shopping highlight would definitely be ReccoFan - I could cry thinking about what is probably the greatest music shop in the world. The branch in Shibuya was massive!! Great shopping in general there as you can find a Big HMV and DiscUnion (great for DJ's).
Shinjuku was also terrific for shopping and nothing like how it's depicted in the Jackie Chan movie

Re: Places to buy Laserdisc/HK Movies type stuff in Tokyo?
I remember going into bookstores in Tokyo when I was there in 2001, and I just bought LOADS of manga and artbooks, and I had stuffed it all in my handcarriage for the plane, or else I probably wouldn't have been able to take it back on the plane, weight-wise. Luckily they didn't weigh the handluggage; It was 23 Tekken Chinmi manga, plus a couple of artbooks in there, plus anything else I could stuff inluckystars wrote:

Japan is fucking awesome.
Also, for a nice shopping experience, you should definately check out Hong Kong. Personally I prefer Mong Kong/Tsim Sha Tsui over the western area (Causeway Bay and Central), with all the markets, cheap restaurants and cheap small stores/malls.
I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...
