Sorry to leave you all... / the frenchman is back

Post by tom2681 »

Hi !

Some of you may have noticed that I haven't posted anything in the last 3 or 4 days (which is highly unusual for me  ).
There's a very good (and quite sad) reason for this:

How should I say this...errm...if you were to go looking for my house, you wouldn't find my house. Instead you would find a big pond with a giant pine tree in it. :D

Some of you may have heard about the recent storms that have struck the south of France lately...

Well, my house has been completely destroyed by a Katrina-like hurricane that broke a 50-meter tall pine tree which then fell on my house and smashed it to bits.
I was lucky to make it with just a broken leg (considering I was inside the house when it happened).

Although all of my cats survived, my 800+ dvd collection did not (and neither did my home-theater).

Of course, I'll try to keep posting from time to time.
But as you can understand, asian cinema and dvds are the least of my concerns right now.

This isn't goodbye (I hope), this is "see you when I get my feet back on the ground". :)

'bye,

Thomas.

P.S:

Oh man! It is just painful to hear about that. I'm glad you're ok (except the leg). How about the house? Do you have an insurance for it? Or rather, are they coming up for the expenses?

And about your DVDs... how should I imagine that? How were they all destroyed?

Geezus Tom, that's sad news. Amazing you're still relatively positive with all the smilies and stuff. Must be heartbreaking to see your house and a very expensive collection be destroyed like that. Do you have insurance of any kind that would cover (some of) the damage!?

So did a tree crash your house, and then it went underwater? Can't you sue the local goverments for doing a shitty job on watercontrol?

Anyway, hope everything will get better real soon, your leg heals well, etc etc, and I hope we'll see u back online real soon.

Best wishes to you for a quick recovery.

Hi guys !

Thanks a lot for the kind words. I really appreciate it. :)
IM wrote:What about the rest of your family? I take it everyone else is ok?
Pretty much. I live alone, so I was the only one there when it happened.
Bisc wrote:hope your feline friends are doing well.
They're doing fine. They'll be staying at my parents' home for the time being (so will I).
LD wrote:Do you have an insurance for it?
Yep. Next week an expert from the insurance company will come to inspect the house (or what's left of it).
Yi wrote:So did a tree crash your house, and then it went underwater?
First: The wind broke the tree.
then: the tree fell on my house and broke the roof + two walls.
then: it started raining, and my bedroom got filled with water.
Recon wrote:its amazing how positive this post is considering what happened.
Bah... you're always thinking "stuff like this only happens to other people".
When it happens to you, you've gotta be strong and save what you can.

So far I've lost:
-All my dvds. They're still in the "mud". Only the waterproof dvds will survive (like the Battle Royale Tartan tin :D ).
-My computer and my backup discs.
-Videoprojector, projection screen, TV, dvd-player...
-All my clothes.
Yi wrote:you're still relatively positive
Having nothing left to lose, I've got no reason to worry about anything.

So...two months to get my money from the insurance company and find a new place to stay, two months to re-build a small dvd collection and a home-theater... I'll be back on track before Christmas ! :D

See you later guys, and thanks again. :)

Knowing me, I think I'd be feeling suicidal by now if that happened to me. You're a stronger person than me Tom2681! Good luck to you, the rest of your family, your cats & your future mate.

Very sad to hear that Tom :(
Still at least you and all your cats got out pretty ok, so thats nice I would have expected a few cats to be in the way of a falling tree, nice to see they are quick cats and unscathed :)

Really hope you get something sorted by christmas, in fact as soon as they pay up. Good Luck :)

hey dude, fashionably late into this thread it seems ;)

well first off im glad you're not permanently damaged and the cats all survived (with that many cats I guess they could afford to lend you one of their zillion lives ;)), when I first spotted the thread i thought 'oh no, who's pissed off who now...' but of course it turned out to be the most valid goodbye thread ever, contain action, drama, pain and a promise to come back... you could almost make a movie about it :D

anyways, stay well, hope living with your folks again doesn't drive you too insane, we'll keep your seat warm here ;)

The frenchman is back.

Alive but not kicking...limping more like...bah, life sucks ! :D

Just to give some good news:
-I've received a phone call from the insurance company telling me how much money they'll give me for my dvds based on all my bills. (always keep your bills when you buy dvds !!)
4 000 € for my dvds ! (enough to buy 500 dvds at DDDHouse).
300 € for my computer (bastards ! my force feedback wheel was worth 300 € already).
~1 000 € for my Home Theater (fair enough).

Image

-I don't know yet how much I'm gonna get for my house. All I know is that it was worth 200 000 € and that it's been completely destroyed.
So I'm sure to get enough money to at least rebuild it.

P.S: I'm planning on rebuilding it myself (on my own).
Image

-As long as my leg doesn't work, I'm stuck on the computer. So I'm going to do a big update to my french thread, and try to catch up to everything I missed during the last two weeks. :)

Thanks again for the moral support, guys.

One-liner of the day:
Who needs a house when you've got insurance ?

It's because even though you pay insurance companies ALOT of money every day of the month, they're total scumm. They can do this ofcourse, because the alternative would be to NOT be insured, which would be even more disastrous in cases like this...

Anyway, good to see you're back Tom. Building your own house again on your own.... man.... you crazy! :)
