Man they seem to cut out stuff from movies these days just so they can include them on DVD. Going to the cinema is more and more becoming like going to see a 'teaser' or 'preview' for when you can buy it on DVD.romerojpg wrote:No its not out in UK yet, has done nice bussiness in america last month.
They cut soo much out of the final film the dvd may well end up being much longer, hope soo as long as its all good footage.
Just hope its a film that lives up to the wait, only 3 weeks till its out not too long now.
It Sucks.

Well, that's because they want to earn more money. Having a 2 hour film is better than a 3 hour film at the cinema, because they can show it more times per day.
Hence more money, and since "every" film now has an "extended edition DVD" it seems to me that filmmakers really don't bother to fight the studios to much anymore when they are told to trim the movie. It's like...
Studio: "You really need to cut 30 minutes from this film you know"
Director: "weeell, okay, but then I'll need an extended DVD, okay?"
Studio: "SURE! NO PROBLEM!"
Studio exec thinks: (then we can force people to double-or-triple-dip!!! YAY!)
Though I'm not sure Romero will like it, as he seems to not like Frank Millers comics... from what I've seen of the film - it's very artsy and Milleresque. I know I'll love it (!) but I'm not so sure it'll be a commercial success... something tells me this could be a bit "too much" for Joe Public.
I base this on sales numbers in the US of course. It earned apprx $30 million the first 3 days, but it's earnings were halved every weekend thereafter. Which is a result I'm guessing from "everyone" wanting to see the new Tarantino/Rodriguez flick with Bruce Willis, DelToro and all the other hotshots... and then word got around that this is not your average Hollywood Actioncraptacular movie. It's still drawn apprx $71 million though (while costing about $40?).
Not so fun fact; on the 5th it seems to have earned US$100 per cinema. That averages to about 15 viewers per cinema?! Something tells me that it's going off the screens extremely fast now. (It was up at 1665 theaters on the 5th).

SIN CITY
**/5
Visually stunning realisation of Frank Miller's graphic novel is an instant cult movie. The fusion of film noir sensabilities and comic art is like nothing you've ever seen. However, that's where the praise ends. The stories and characters did absolutely nothing for me, the dialogue is frequently silly, and the endless pulpy violence became numbing very quickly. How many times can you enjoy someone being hit in the face? After about 30 times I lost count... Everything is larger than life, as it was intended, but did it have to be so soulless, unpleasent and mindless too?

Hey I guess I liked it more than you then
SIN CITY 4 out of 5 (maybe lower?)
Interesting film, which is unlike anything I have seen before in many ways and still not sure what I think of what I just saw in the cinema, but I know I liked it that's for sure. Its just how much did I like it, as it was hard to get into to begin with and once it got into its stride it became more watchable and by the end it was pretty thrilling and you didn't really want it to end.
The plot? well too hard really to sum up in even a few words as there are three intertwining stories all set in Sin City and each kind of cross over into each other realms and timelines are distorted a little like Pulp Fiction in that respect, but lets get this straight it is no Pulp Fiction. Basically the Stories are all nasty, sick and violent and feature twisted lowlife scumbags from the hard streets of Sin City, so dont expect to actually have anything on common with these people, which is maybe a good thing as it does get the film into a place few films get to.
The large cast is impressive and some get lots to do and some get very limited cameos sadly. The stand out of the film was Mickey Rourke as Marv, his story was the best and his character was the most fun in the film and most comic book like in that he was far from a normal guy in looks and abilities. He worked very well and you really felt for the big lug and his violent tendencies really were something to watch. He kills many people and was ridiculously powerful and capable of severe beatings and maiming and no matter what was throw his way he took it on his big chin and kept on going. He may be dim, but he speaks honestly and hard. He doesn't mess about and when the going gets tuff he breaks peoples faces and will not stop until he gets his man.
Carla Gugino pops up during Marv's little tale of revenge and she definatly looks the part as she is gorgeous and adds plenty to this section of the film just by her looks alone. As does Elijah Wood, having fun in his role which has to be seen really as its soo out there, but a load of evil sicko fun, a sick streak which runs throughout the movie and Elijah Wood just tops it all really, he is no Frodo.
Clive Owen was slick and surprised me as he came off very well in his role as a convincing good guy? who can handle himself and Brittany Murphy also worked well in her sexy little go between throughout the film.
Bruce Willis got plenty to do and worked his presence well and he came off a hard old man with a unstoppable attitude. Jessica Alba was not used as much as I would have liked, but she looks the part and much like all the cast they did exactly what was required of them and I cannot say anyone came off looking bad. I think it depends on how much you like certain actors really as there is a lot of them crammed into the film and I liked some better than others really. Devon Aoki as Samurai lady killer Miho for instance came off very well and while she didn't get a lead role, she got a memorable role and that's what a lot of the cast get role which you will remember after you leave the cinema.
The films look is striking at times and does work pretty much all the time. The black and white stylised tones make your eyes go to where the director (or artist in this films case) wants you to look and while most of the film is basic in that there is never too much going on in one shot, it does work as usually that's all you need, just a few characters in frame with a little indication of where they are. The weather comes off well in the film from snow to rain, while none of it is real it looks great and in fact the CGI work is well done for the film, even if its not 100% realistic. It works in the context of the film and it never really turns to daylight in the film as we always seem to be in some dark situation and the night time is the best place to play out these sorts of scenes.
The flourishes of colour attract your attention also, from coloured eyes, to blood from various heroes and foes as the film does lay on the violence. The nature of the film is comic book and because of the black and white nature of the movie the blood and gore is maybe over the top as people are killed in many ways, from heads being lopped off, to people shot multiple times all over loosing body parts in the process, people don't die easy in the film and many get more than a last breath no mater how many body parts they loose, be it hand, head or pecker! we see plenty of parts go astray usually with blast of blood spraying from the stumps. Some cast members get the privilege of having colourful blood, from white and black to red and yellow it all looks the part and stands out as it should.
Its not overly violent really as we don't see it as realistic in any way, even the sickest things do not really come off as real in any way as the style of the film just lowers the tone right down and it just washes over you. Its fun to watch how someone will die next as you know its going to happen many times.
I think its a film that will greatly benefit from a second viewing and I look forward to seeing it again, its just its hard to take the film in the 1st time. I found it took a while to get into the films way of talking and acting as some dialogue is not exactly real and the constant voiceovers can become condescending and a little over the top as they maybe should have changed it a little from the actual comic it was based on as what works on the page does not necessarily transfer to the screen well, but saying that once you are sucked into the film it does become addictive. I found myself wanting more and more as the film went on and that an only be a good thing.

Shit man, where are my manners? Totally forgot to credit you for your lengthy, impressive review. Many thanks.
I also agree about Clive Owen, I thought he was fab in this.
I want a good idea of possible future DVD releases/re-releases before purchasing. Don't wanna double dip. I'm still waiting for Kill Bill dammit.
