Still not playing here but the film has been well received; no. 1 at US box office and 8.7 average rating at IMDB (13 000 votes)

Re: Inglourious Basterds
That means nothing IMO. American audiences are so different from UK ones (maybe European too) at the very least and IMDB isn't exactly what I call reliable info. It's had favourable reviews over here. I doubt I'll be bothering. I'm bored of QT's homage to this and homage to that. Just make a proper film again.
I cannot be arsed to download it or pay for it. I'll wait until it comes on TV. That's how much I care.

I didn't mean it would mean the film is good. Just happy it has been received well because QT is the best American director out there and he deserves to get his next project financed, whatever it will be.
Again? Has he ever done a film that wasn't a homage?bradavon wrote:Just make a proper film again.

He's not made a proper film since Jackie Brown IMO. Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Death Proof are certainly good fun, but they're not in the same league of quality as Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown.HungFist wrote:Again? Has he ever done a film that wasn't a homage?
Is Pulp Fiction an homage? If so, to what?

I'd say Paul Thomas Anderson is a superior American director.

Without a doubt Gas. There are many others. Michael Mann is a better director too.
Boogies Nights = Good. The only one of this four I don't rate massively.
Magnolia = Brilliant
Punch-Drunk Love = Brilliant
There Will Be Blood = Outstanding

Boogies Nights = Great until the last half hour when it bellyflops massively.
Magnolia = Boring.
Punch-Drunk Love = a film made for people so far up themselves they have difficulty breathing.Sandler should stick to dumbass family comedies.
There Will Be Blood = not seen it.

Isnt Res. Dogs a homage to City on Fire?

From what i understand, no. It just borrows "some" of it's ideas but is otherwise very different.
So because I like it, I am stuck up? He so should btw. ALL Sandler films are hideous, except for this. I cannot stand him outside of PDL.saltysam wrote:Punch-Drunk Love = a film made for people so far up themselves they have difficulty breathing.Sandler should stick to dumbass family comedies.

Re: Inglourious Basterds
I did make a mistake there, which is easy.
There Will Be Blood is great, but no way is it like any of his other film in any way, shape or form, so I just dont think of it as one of "His" films. For one its not up its own arse, well acctually it is by the end haha but still good.

Pinch is a bit strong. That's like saying no film is allowed to copy ideas from others films. Not that I knew that.

I was hoping you would not bring up Pulp Fiction because I can't remember if it's a hommage to much else than popular culture in general. Maybe pbradavon wrote:Is Pulp Fiction an homage? If so, to what?HungFist wrote:Again? Has he ever done a film that wasn't a homage?
But it's funny you say he hasn't done a proper film since Jackie Brown (which is a blaxploitation hommage), as if you were assuming Inglorious Basterds was nothing more than a hommage. You don't still think it's a remake, do you?
Every Tarantino film is all about pop culture and playing with it. Reservoid Dogs for example is heist movie without a heist... but it's also full of pop culture references from Pam Grier talk to Super Sounds of the 70's and Madonna and borrowing the clothing from A Better Tomorrow 2 and of copying the ending + several shots from City on Fire.
Tarantino has always been (and hopefully will always be) all about "hommage" and adding his own twist to it.

I'd argue that only Kill Bill and Death Proof are out-and-out homages from a conceptual standpoint, all his other films are straight thrillers/dramas which happen to have lots of little homages/pop culture references in them. Jackie Brown was certainly not concieved as a blaxploitation film, it's an Elmore Leonard thriller that QT added lots of Blaxploitation trappings to (like making the central character black!

No. The trailer makes it looks like a B-Movie revenge flick but I'm hearing the trailer is in fact very inacccurate. It just looks a bit rubbish. Compared to say Reservoirs Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown. Which have proper story arches etc...HungFist wrote:as if you were assuming Inglorious Basterds was nothing more than a hommage. I'm really talking about Kill Bill and Death Proof. Both good fun but they're really just action films and very few action films in my book are what I call proper movies.
I an probably agree with that but you can take it "too" far.HungFist wrote:Tarantino has always been (and hopefully will always be) all about "hommage" and adding his own twist to it.
Very true. You cannot say this outright copies from other films, it's based on a book and that's common practise.Shingster wrote:Jackie Brown was certainly not concieved as a blaxploitation film, it's an Elmore Leonard thriller that QT added lots of Blaxploitation trappings to (like making the central character black!).

I had to take the risk, because if you had named any other movie I could've crushed you. I couldn't let that chance slip awaybradavon wrote:What else would I bring up?HungFist wrote:I was hoping you would not bring up Pulp Fiction.
That's very true. I was just taking a one-sided approach because Brad had criticised Tarantino's recent films for being hommages and praised JB in the same sentence, when the chances are IB is less a hommage than JB was.Shingster wrote:I'd argue that only Kill Bill and Death Proof are out-and-out homages from a conceptual standpoint, all his other films are straight thrillers/dramas which happen to have lots of little homages/pop culture references in them. Goddamn, they need to release that film here already so that I will know what I'm taking about.

I didn't. I criticised them for being B-Movie action films (nothing wrong with that per se but they're not proper films for me). Not homages, you misunderstood.HungFist wrote:That's very true. Because it's a proper film, in the way Kill Bill and Death Proof aren't, not because it's an homage. I still have no interest in Glorious Bastards.HungFist wrote:and praised JB in the same sentence

Once again
I love the way you think you know what you are talking about, see the film, then come back with such ignorant comments.
Or just dont type, as you have no interest, yet keep posting such garbage comments.

My Tarantino best to worst list (*writer only):
Reservoir Dogs
*True Romance
Jackie Brown
Pulp Fiction
Death Proof
*From Dusk Till Dawn
Kill Bill V.1
Kill Bill V.2
*Natural Born Killers
Re. There Will be Blood: Decent drama until the final act. The final scene is so hideous that it should've been set fire to. It actually ruined the film for me. No exaggeration.

MILKSHAKEEEEEEE! I still have no idea how I feel about that, but I loved the rest of it all so it never mattered much.
Basterds is an odd film, well worth seeing on the big screen for many reasons, but mainly becuase its bloody good and just worked, but maybe not a film to take a lady with to see haha
