For sure but that always was going to become a thing of history. HD-DVD had a disk space issue from day one and sure triple layer would've fixed it but no player was ever released that could support it.

THE Hut have got 10% off blu-ray today only using the code BR10, nothing special but Payback can be had for £10.74 and the forthcoming Ip Man at £10.74 (it's £17.99 on play currently)

Is Ip Man good? The stupid search engine doesn't like that IP is so short and doesn't know how to find any results. It looks really good but these films can be so hit and miss.

I don't think you need to have liked Donnie's previous work to enjoy this.

Yes I liked Fearless and yes I've liked most of Donnie's previous work but neither answer the question. Plenty of period martial arts films fail.

Well obviously with that attitude the only way to truly answer the question is to watch the bloody film! Someone saying "It's similar to Fearless" should be all the recommendation any sane, rational person needs if they enjoyed Fearless! :P

Mark didn't actually say it was similar though, did he. Attitude? I'm guessing that was a joke :).

I presume it's as well made as Fearless?

I liked Ip Man, it had some very good fightscenes and Donnie Yen is pretty good as Ip Man. It is also very nice seeing Wing Chun on-screen like this.

I didn't LOVE it though. I didn't care all that much for the characters, the story was pretty predictable and straightforward, the drama was 'meh', the japanese villain was 'meh', and in the end you will just remember it primarily for the well done fight-scenes. You just get the feeling that it could have been a bit more 'epic', a bit more 'special'. It just feels slightly too 'low-budget', and 'low-budget' isn't a bad thing as long as you still get the 'drama' right, but Ip Man kinda fails to do so.

I didn't LOVE Fearless either BTW. Also a very nice martial arts movie with very nice fights and a very good performance by Jet, but that's about it.

Thanks Yi. That's just the ticket. The UK BD is bound to be cheaper than the HK one too. I hope it has lossless audio. Cine-asia are very hit and miss in this regard.

I thought Fearless (DC) was excellent.

Fearless was pretty good, but I thought it was a bit 'dragging' and uninteresting when he went from ass-kicking tough-guy to 'mute' farmboy to find his inner peace/zen/whatever. Up till that point the movie was fantastic, and then that part came along and I was like... " .....m...eh!?", and it finished with some serious asskicking again, and a 'sad' ending.

I guess I like personal vendetta movies a bit more than these 'wholesome message' movies. Fearless has that message thing in it. Ip Man also kinda has that idealistic 'serve the better good to fight the oppression' message in it. I guess I'm just a trailertrash simpleton who prefers the "you killed my wife/brother/father/goldfish/dignity/son, so now I must kill YOU!!!" storylines. It's more personal so you can relate more, and understand the emotions and actions of the lead-character better.

Maybe give the shorter cut ago? You may prefer it's pace. Agreed it did drag a bit in that section but not enough to really bother me.

I prefer martial arts films that give a good message. Neither are accurate but the revenge films you mention are even worse. My family have been hurt, I'll now have to kill you, when most sane people just wouldn't do that.

Ip Man should be looked at as only part of the story-there's a sequel on the way which i imagine a straight continuation of the last one-i hear Bruce will be in it

Bruce Lee will be portrayed by 10-year-old child actor Jiang Daiyan

Producers are still searching for an actor to portray an adult version of Bruce Lee for this film and possibly IP MAN 3.

It sounds an insane idea IMO. Sure a great one on paper but in reality, there is simply NO ONE who could ever fill his shoes.

Well as Ip Man was Bruce's teacher it stands to reason he's going to feature in a biopic about his life!

Bruce never played a REALLY big part in Ip Man's life I believe, so all that's needed is a kid who kinda looks and acts like him, for an extended cameo and I guess some training-footage. Bruce was just one of the students, and as far as I can remember, he was usually taught by a si-hing ('older brother'), rather than by Ip Man himself.

...although I wouldn't be surprised if they'd exaggerate the whole master-student relationship between the two for the movie.
