Drunken Master 2 is coming very soon remember, English dub only but then that's all we've really had on DVD too.

Gorgeous is quite a good film until Jackie "has to" fight, which stops the film dead. He really shouldn't have fought in that one, it works much better as a straight romance. Which frankly is what it is, the fights are only there because it's what his fans expect. They're ridiculously out of place.

A joke I presume? That would also assume I have one near me.

Legend of the Drunken Master doesn't count as Drunken Master II in my eyes. It's a bastardization and I wouldn't keep it for free. And I really mean that.

Totally agree. I rather like the film, it has considerable charm. Not something I'd go back to much though.

I totally agree. The OOP Thakral DVD is the better choice to stick with, despite being heavily cropped. I've watched both and found it a much better experience the second time, not enough to actually like it but I thought I should give it a second shot, the first time being fucked up.

I just meant there are options out there and sadly the only option for sometime/maybe forever. I cannot see Thakral releasing it any time soon and do we even know who owns the HK rights?

I could not disagree more about Gorgeous, the action is perfect in that film, suits it so well for me, some of the best fighting he has done as well.

It's not a bad transfer it's just a mediocre one, hence the 5/10. I admit my standards are probably higher than most but I find it hard not to be critical when you're viewing on a screen greater than 50".

We should expect the best from Blu-rays, they've had years to grasp the knack of encoding video.

They say a BD-50 is large enough that there shouldn't really be any noise on your average 2hr film, but I find instances of small blocking and banding on the vast majority of the discs I own. While I was watching Shinjuku Incident I was convinced the disc must've been BD-25, my jaw hit the floor when I saw it had a high bitrate!

Crikey sounds painful some of them flaws, mind you it may well blow that dvd away (not hard) :) but hey thats not the point.

It's just a shame a big asian film like this does not get a presentation to show it off as quite a few people may well be importing this film, if they see lower quality Blu Rays, well it may put them off in the future.

It looks like a decent enough HD upgrade but WTF have they done to the audio in typical Miramax fashion. Sure DD5.1 would give you effectively Half-rate legacy DTS but the DTS-HD MA is going to be so much better. One definitely to avoid on principle. They better not fuck up the UK release too.

Grim was saying the American release has an altered story, is that true?

Only Iron Monkey left from that batch for me. Are there any reviews/comparisons left for that one?

I'm not sure what you mean by altered story, I just remember when I saw it in the cinema, the opening text was different from the HK DVD, there's a shot of a map of China/Qin in the opening montage and it doesnt say All Under Heaven at the end. Instead it says "Our Land".
The US translation is supposedly crap and has come under critcism.

IIRC the Miramaxe dubs are not very close to the original HK, the opening text is completely different as Grim says and I think their are alterations throughout the film as well.

What about Zatoichi Brad, you seen that film before?

Personally I don't care about dubs. The HK DVDs only has Mandarin btw, maybe Cantonese but no English. Are there really other alterations or is is it just the opening text? I'd probably live with this if it wasn't for the fucked up audio. Which makes no sense when they gave the DVD Mandarin DTS/DD5.1 and English DD5.1.

I saw it in the cinema, owned it on DVD, it's my favourite of Kitano's directorial work but like the Coen Brothers (and to an extend Jackie Brown), his work isn't for me. I've never fully enjoyed any of Kitano's directorial work, same goes for the Coen Brothers.

As Grim pointed the IM BD will have a significantly altered subtitle stream but for me it's a (very good) martial arts and unlike Hero the dialogue is of less importance. In other words it doesn't really bother me.

I think Shing meant subs.
The Miramax version of IM has new subs which change the story and also a different score (CTHD like).

Hopefully there'll be an HK BD.
