7/7 four years on

Post by grim_tales »

It is 4 years ago today since 52 people died in London when suicide bombers attacked London :( I think we should remember those 52 victims.
God bless.
Where were you when it happened? I can't remember. I remember being scared and upset as I had relatives in London and knew my dad used to work there. :(

It's interesting how so differently this has effect people here, compared with 9/11. The tribute was appropriate but I've not come across anyone whose mentioned it today. All I can deduce is we're used to domestic war, whereas Americans still are not.

There's an article and video here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8137265.stm

I cannot remember where I was but I can vividly where I was at 9/11. I guess that says it all.

Well 9/11 was slightly more epic...

It's all relative. That doesn't stop it from barely being mentioned or reported upon. Jacko is getting more news airtime.

Which is a bloody disgrace.

That whole media circus is disgusting.

I remember 9/11 much more vividly because I was watching that live, non-stop, on pretty much all channels, and for what seems like days.

As far as 7/7 goes, I hardly remember it at all. There was a bombing, many were killed, people came out of the subway bleeding, but we never saw any really dramatic footage of the actual attack, nor the huge outpour of emotion and the reactions etc.

It was less 'epic', if that's the right word for such a dramatic event.

I can remember 9/11, I'm sure I was at college at the time. That was so surreal.

I see what you're saying Yi but 7/7 barely got any more mention in The UK. I wouldn't expect it to get the same level of attention abroad. It's barely been mentioned at all here and Jacko is all over all the papers.

There was certainly dramatic footage at the time of 7/7. Don't you remember the bus or people covered in blood? There was no huge out pour granted but that isn't the British way, whereas it "certainly is" the American way. They loved to be noticed.

Yeah, I did remember the people coming out of the subway bleeding and all, but tbh we can see that kinda footage pretty much 2-3 times a week when we just watch the international news.... so it just doesn't have that big an impact as 2 planes hitting a HUGE and extremely famous landmark and symbol, in a country that's never really been attacked before (apart from Pearl Harbour), with that amount of success and huge number of victims.
Add to that it wasn't just the attack on NY, but also the other 2 planes, one which attacked the Pentagon and one which attacked a cornfield or something.

It was pretty much an epic experience, and greatly succesfull and of which we still feel the results each and every day.

London was 'just' a succesfull and horrendous bombing. It wasn't 'original' or 'epic', it was just shocking and sad.

Ofcourse it's weird that just a few years later there's hardly any attention to it, but considering everything else that's going on in the world right now, I can totally understand it that they aren't puttinga huge focus on this event from years ago. It's not like these are slow newsweeks or something ;)

I still say it's more than it effected Americans much more than Brits, regardless of size.

I think an additional factor might be that the UK has seen its fair share of bombings over the years (courtesy of IRA scum) whereas 9/11 was the first time foreign terrorists have succeeded (and on such a large scale) in the USA.

You simply cannot compare 7/7 to 9/11, the scale of the events are on a completely different level. As bad as 7/7 was, it feels like bomb attacks claim near that level of lives somewhere in the world (read: middle east) on almost a yearly basis.

What you have with 9/11 is one of the the single most devastating contained attacks on a single nation in human history. Over 3000 people died on 9/11, that's greater than Pearl Harbour!

I hear what you're saying Shing, but its not a competition, both are tragic events.

If it WAS a competition, 9/11 was a legendary game-winning 70 yards touchdown in the play-offs, and 7/7 was a fieldgoal.

I'm not talking about competitions, I'm talking about why 09/11 is remembered more intensely than 07/07, which is a question that has been posed in this very thread, is it not?
