The DD looks pretty good. Has it been confirmed how much is cut? What's the Cantonese soundtrack like?

Thanks for the captures. Could someone add the Universe Laser please. Where's the cheapest to get it btw?

I'm not so sure... the contrast on the DD is way off and it's edge-enhanced.

Actually I think the Dimension print looks better. If it weren't an old letterbox edition it would probably be superior.

Yes, it's too soft and overly dark but it has a more consistant, arguably pleasing, tone.

I have the Universe DVD (the 2nd edition). Will post caps tomorrow unless someone beats me to it.

When I say it looks good, I mean comparatively. Obviously it has flaws but given the competition, it well looks good.

I don't see EE just overly bright.

Great. That's the one I have too but I've yet to see the film.

If anyone has the first version (I forgot all about that one), please post captures too.

You can very clearly see EE all over the final grab, most notably around the soldiers on the left of the frame, but perhaps Mark was referring to the outline you can see around Jet's left shoulder (our right) in the first non-title screengrab. It's not EE, looks like it may be mosquito noise or some form of composite ringing perhaps?

You can see the problem in the dimension grabs as well, to a lesser extent. Have you compressed these images a little too much Salty?

Good point about the EE in the final grab. I missed that one.

Despite the differing title card, this is still the cut version, am I right?

Concurring with Mark, the levels on DD are shit much of the time because it's a little overexposed and has that blue tone and unfortunately, ended up with a heavy amount of grain - not entirely sure about it being edge-enhancement. Dimension, despite being non-anamorphic looks a shit-load better because of the levels - they look so superior and realistic.

The DD title card is an interesting one - could 'The Legend Of Fong Sai Yuk' be the export title and at the same time, was it shorter than the HK version? Is the English dub Dimension's, or the 1993 dub? Same cuts as Dimension (could that be the same length as the export version)?

I also have the Universe DVD, but I will try to add the Japanese captures. I think it could be better-looking than the French edition. Dimension will probably beat them all though.

I'll be passing on this because of the cuts, I can't rely on the subtitles being good, whilst the image isn't great. I'd rather have a custom.

viewtopic.php?t=2686 - my previous comparison.

768X576 for Dimension, 1024x576 for DD. I can redo them again if they are wrong, when i get chance.like i said it was a quick comparision because i knew people would be interested in this title and would like a look.

I know we've been hear before but when it's English only and non-anamorphic it matters not. Non-anamorphic distorts the image so badly for me, I just cannot stand it.

Surely, it's more likely they decided to just compromise and make their own tile card.

Surely someone knows "exactly" what these are?

Can someone answer these please:

Cantonese track sounds fine to me but i'm no expert and i haven't watched it yet. you won't find this particularly cheap anywhere yet,it only came out yesterday, best price is here, first seller up, £10.67 delivered, cheaper than what i paid at Tower.

I was talking about the last screen cap.

I'm going to do some Universe caps now.

Distort isn't the right word unless you've got some rigid set-up for a TV that can't zoom. Non-anamorphic is a pain in the arse and I'm admitting that, but this is nothing more than a comparison of images. Dimension's DVD is a lot better-looking because it's not as grainy and the colours/brightness look correct.

If you were to make a custom, I'd recommend correcting the uncut and anamorphic Japanese (or French) video using the colours of Dimension as a guide.
Surely, it's more likely they decided to just compromise and make their own tile card.
The shot of it has grain, it's more likely to be export than DD's.

It would be a waste of money to buy it when a custom would be better.

Extras are another thing though.

I hate zooming non-anamorphic, it never fits quite right. Thankfully I rarely have to. I've not bought a non-anamorphic DVD in years. Distort is the right word :).

I cannot be arsed with a custom DVD. I have no time to make one or the inclination.

Even accounting for the different software used etc... the Universe Laser is AWFUL. You cannot also see (obviously) from the captures how rubbish the 5.1 remix is too.

Salty remember to state it's the so called Remastered version, not the original Universe Laser release. "Second release" is a better name.

Thanks Mark.

Ah that's the resolution, i'm talking compression, ie: how strong is the JPEG compression on those grabs, as too much will introduce mosquito noise.

Universe has the worst image but it's the only one that's almost uncut.

OK, just finished watching DD's. Here's a basic rundown of the disc:
Opens and closes with international export credits. Whether its a shorter international version or simply the Dimension cut, I don't know for sure. Features the Dimension english dub though so I assume its the latter.
Cantonese mono is genuine but slightly out of synch at times, most notable during heavy action scenes.
Image is quite inconsistent with some scenes looking very nice and then some a complete mess. Atleast there's no strange blurring like Tai Chi Master. I didn't spot a single blur.
Subtitles are decent but not great. Somes lines, like when Sai Yuk and him mom bust the fighting stance, aren't translated.

It's a bit frankenstein! From what has been posted:

Video: Export (don't know if it was originally shorter than the HK version, or cut to fit Dimension's).
Audio: Dimension English dub, an abridged Cantonese track.
Subtitles: Not likely to be re-translated. At best, a correction job of existing subtitles (which isn't generally good - especially if it's a film with sub-par translation).

I'd be interested in a French and Japanese image comparison - I should post the Japanese captures. My PC isn't responding well with the DVD drive, but I'll try.

How much is untranslated? Are we talking the odd line or lots of lines.

Surely someone knows exactly how many minutes are cut? Thanks. I'd probably still get this, seeing as the HK DVD is non-anamorphic (eve worse quality) and no other version has English subs.

I already have custom DVDs (from the French discs) of Fist of Legend and Tai Chi Master, both excellent but neither keepers IMO.

I'm actually looking forward to Bodyguard from Beijing more (given that I've not seen FYK yet). I prefer it to both Tai Chi Master and Fist of Legend.

That odd line as well as some dialogue being spoken off-screen (like when people talk over one another) aren't translated. Subs are most likely based off the old English dub, which I imagine is much more accurate the Dimension's.
