Back to the topic, the DD Fong Sai Yuk will probably be more or less like the French dvd which also uses "The Legend of..." title. One thing that concerns me though is that on DD's cover the word "Legend" is HUGE while "Fong Sai Yuk" sits at the bottom barely visible. I hope the 100min run time holds up.

Fong Sai Yuk will be released on May 26.
On HK Flix the cover says "The Legend" in letters (with "of Fong Sai Yuk" in much smaller letters).

Bey Logan said it's going to be the Dimension version with a Cantonese soundtrack cut to fit. Unlike other releases, it attempts to retrieve the original title though.grim_tales wrote:Fong Sai Yuk will be released on May 26.

I think it may have been about 10 minutes of cuts. I can't remember exactly - there was a list of changes at the (now disappeared) alliance for respectful treatment of Asian films aimed at Miramax.bradavon wrote:Cool, thanks guys. How badly cut is the Dimension USA Cut?
One to consider, there is no even half decent English subtitled version.
The Universe DVD is very slightly cut, 5.1, PAL>NTSC and non-anamorphic, but it's English subtitled. Not great, but would do I suppose.
From there, there's the non-English subtitled anamorphic, uncut and mono French and Japanese DVDs. I think (like much of HK cinema) a custom would be better.
Visually, the Dimension DVD will probably look the best levels-wise (despite being non-anamorphic).

The French as it's progressive - I think the mono soundtrack will be in a far better state as well.HungFist wrote:Which one is better?chenlung wrote: From there, there's the non-English subtitled anamorphic, uncut and mono French and Japanese DVDs.
I don't think either look fantastic visually, but I'm sure a bit of touching up of the French would make it look very acceptable.

Thanks. That's a lot.chenlung wrote:I think it may have been about 10 minutes of cuts. I can't remember exactly - there was a list of changes at the (now disappeared) alliance for respectful treatment of Asian films aimed at Miramax.
That's the one I have. I never knew it was PAL to NTSC too but have only ever had a quick check of it. The 5.1 for what it's worth, it's as bad as Tai Chi Master Universe.chenlung wrote:The Universe DVD is very slightly cut, 5.1, PAL>NTSC and non-anamorphic, but it's English subtitled. It might not be 10 minutes, I could be wrong.Thanks. That's a lot.

To be honest, the 5.1s aren't as bad as the likes of 'Warriors Two' and 'Chinese Boxer'.The 5.1 for what it's worth, it's as bad as Tai Chi Master Universe.

It was to be expected this would be the Dimension cut.Markgway wrote:How many times can one film be fucked-up? Any cred that DD had has all but evaporated.
On the upside, at least it fixes many of the problems with the HK DVD. Although I agree in principle.
Does this apply to all DD DVDs of Dimension cuts?chenlung wrote:DD tried, but can't get the uncut version due to red tape in HK.

Yeah, you know that's bullshit as the French managed to get an uncut version without bother. Channel 4 showed it uncut on TV FFS!Ivan Drago wrote:What red tape? Do HK film companies enjoy screwing their clients?chenlung wrote:It's missing about 5 seconds. Nothing serious.

I think Channel 4 was missing a second of the burning body after the opening fight.Markgway wrote:Yeah, you know that's bullshit as the French managed to get an uncut version without bother. I think the French obtained their version ages ago (the Japanese released theirs in 2003) - perhaps this attitude from HK companies is a recently established one where they're just not giving a shit anymore.

LOL it's already been explainedShingster wrote:Why would DD even bother with obtaining a chinese print when they've been perfectly happy to use the Dimension prints for just about every other release to date?
'Tai Chi Master' is the only previously-owned Dimension title to have a non-Dimension version and instead, the export version (Dimension's shorter dub fills in the gaps with jumps to the 1993 dub). A mess of a release really (bad 5.1, downmix, frame issues, English dub issues, ropey subtitles, etc).
I don't know how some of it works. DD may only have the Cantonese soundtrack rights if they're reasonably priced, although it doesn't explain 'My Father Is A Hero's lack of Cantonese, and the access to 'TCM's export print.
Bey responded to someone (who then posted it on the forum) saying they weren't able to get the HK scenes for 'Fong Sai Yuk' - the HK company doesn't give a shit about their fans.
