Collecting movies

Post by HungFist »

Are you collecting movies from some certain directors, actors, studios, genres...? Meaning that you would buy a missing film just because of that, no matter if the film is good or not.

Me

Directors
- Nobuhiro Yamashita (only missing a few TV works)
- Norifumi Suzuki (missing many, but got over 30)
- Kazuhiko Yamaguchi (missing one that is on dvd)
- Shinji Somai (missing two that are on dvd, plus many that aren't)
-Hideo Gosha (got about 20, missing 5. May later limit my collection to 60's and 70's because his output becomes uneven in the 80's and 90's)
- Shunji Iwai (missing his latest film. I'm a bit unsure about his future)

Actors
- Shinichi Chiba (till early 90's, excluding some TV work and maybe smallest supporting roles)
- Reiko Oshida
- Jackie Chan (HK films)
- Maybe: Hiroko Yakushimaru till mid 80's.

Studios
- No studios, but I am a Toei fanatic. A person's value equals to how many Toei dvds he owns...

Once gave a thought for
- Sogo Ishii (having the first R2J box set in my shelf and the second on my shopping list, a complete collection wouldn't look bad at all. But he's too uneven, so, no)

Maybe in the future
- Ken Takakura has become one of my favorite actors. I may end up with quite a big Takakura Toei collection one day

Excluded are directors who have only made a few films and therefore can't be qualified yet.

I used to own all of WKWs movies but sold As Tears Go By and Days of Being Wild, as they're not keepers IMO.

Otherwise no. I don't see the point owning a rubbish movie.

I used to do it for Jackie Chan, but then ended up selling shitty ones and I haven't bought some of his newer ones I don't fancy.

That does make a lot of sense and I have quite a lot of appreciation for people who think like that.

But then, if you're a fan of a director who has made 30 movies, 29 of them great, and you already own those 29, wouldn't it be nice to have a perfect collection? Especially if it's a lesser know director, someone whose films you can't get from your local video rental store or see on TV every 4 months.

Haha, it's true that the only real keepers for me are the ones he himself directed. I know that's controversial though as most people love the Sammo Hung ones such as Dragons Forever and Wheels on Meals, but I just find those ones dull.

I own so many bland Jackie Chan films, still I guess I have them for reference at least if I need to go back :D many merge into one another.

I collect many films from some people, Van Damme for instance, own every one of his film bar one (AWOL-Lionheart) own it on VHS mind you haha. VD has a few turds, but I dont mind as I paid very little.

@ Hung: In the case of Jackie he's made shed loads of movies and a hell of alot are rubbish, some great ones too obviously but yes sure, if it's only 1 title why not.

I own the Alien Quadrilogy, even though really I could sell Part 4. I own Goodfellas on DVD ans BD, as I own a Scorsese DVD box set.

I did used to think like that but ultimately it gets silly and you start to new rooms just for DVDs. I used to have 650 DVDs/BDs. I now have 480 and it's not moved higher than that really in about 2 years. Sure many because I'm replacing DVDs for BDs but many because I have a clear out and get rid of those, that really can go. I made a decision that I had enough space taken up and am absolutely not going over it.

p.s - Dragons Forever is one of JCs best. Anyway back on topic, off JC.

I still maintain that The Medallion is the worst Jackie Chan film, but some people think it's better than The Tuxedo :?

Both of those are better than Rob-B-Hood. Out of the 30 Jackie movies I've seen, Rob-B-Hood is the only really bad one.

With Jackie (and Shinichi) the thing is that even if the film is otherwise poor, Jackie himself always tends to be a lot of fun.

Wheels on Meals is pretty good, grim. You should watch that. I still regret not having picked up the HKL when I could.

I don't 'collect' movies just because they're from a certain director or actor. I just buy movies that I feel are good enough to be worth owning.

My favourite directors, I'm eager to see all of their films.

Off the top of my head:- I'd buy the complete works of WKW, Kitano, Cronenberg and maybe Kevin Smith too (I own every film of his to date, except that new one with Seth Rogen).

I was going to say John Carpenter, but then I realised that I already own all of his great to decent films bar "In the Mouth of Madness". I've seen his complete filmography now (except the Masters of Horror episodes that he directed) and there's a few of his films that I'll never own because they are garbage:- Village of the Damned, Ghosts of Mars, Memoirs of an Invisible Man.

I have a soft-spot for JC's Vampires, I may pick that up on BD if I see it for cheap.

I won't ever aim to own every single movie of the people I'm gonna list below, because I simply don't see the point of keeping a bad movie which I probably won't watch for a second time, but those are still the people in filmmaking business I respect more than others, respectively watched more than a good share of films by, and whose careers I'm certainly gonna follow in future times:

Directors:

- Takashi Miike
- Sion Sono
- Seijun Suzuki
- Shunji Iwai
- Ryuhei Kitamura
- John Woo
- Quentin Tarantino

Actor / Actress:

- Sonny Chiba
- Aoi Miyazaki
- Gianna Jun a.k.a. Jeon Ji-Hyun
- Hiroko Yakushimaru
- Moon Lee

Studio:

- Ghibli
- Furthermore I'm kinda enamoured with the idea of owning all Godzilla-Movies one day

Special Mention:

- Uwe Boll. No respect, though. Just morbid curiosity. :D
Seen almost every single one of his flick and will continue to do so in future times. But only for rental; I'd never buy 'em.

That's actually the best episode in the first series.
