Maybe Brad's thinking of the opening scene because I seem to recall him having longer hair in that than the rest of the film, I may be wrong though.

Like it's really worth arguing about Mark. You argue for the sake of it for more than I ever do :D. It's a mess, no matter what you want to call it. This and other reasons mean Goldeneye hasn't dated very well.

GoldenEye is better than Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough though, fact.

Agreed ;).

I've never understood why Goldeneye is revered, sure it's good but it's not better than Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough. TND is my favourite but I'd say they're all equal.

p.s - By implication, are you saying Die Another Day is better? ;).

Nope, I chose those two because I know you bizarrely prefer them :D It's one of those cases where it's like, I appreciate that you personally prefer them, but GoldenEye just is a better film!

How can you possibly rate World is not Enough above Tomorrow Never Dies? Are you forgetting Yeoh is in TND?
Lol... is that a backdown or what?
Am I reading the same thing you are? :?

Markgway wrote:And as for relating to it/them. Clearly it's a different culture we're talking about. But underneath the facades I recognised elements of truth in these characters. It doesn't take much imagination to fit these templates onto people we knew at school (in some cases maybe even ourselves?)

You guys never had a stuck-up bitch? A troublemaker? A sporty guy? The wierdo who always sat at the back? The nerd? Etc...
No, I simply can't compress people that I knew into one single definable trait.
I've seen. And I think Eva has missed the point slightly. They won't be friends come Monday. They gained a certain respect for each other now that they've been forced into interaction (and probed beyond the surface) but the implication is that despite their smiles and cheerios very little will have changed. Maybe I'm just looking at it from a cyncial viewpoint. Anyone disagree?
No, I gleamed all of that from the film, that commentary is pounded into the viewers' heads with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. I just can't suspend my disbelief at idea that all of these characters would've connected with each other in just one day. It would just never happen such circumstances.

Lol... the whole point is that these people are supposed to be more than that. They start off as stereotypes (in the way we all categorise people) but change their opinion once they get to know each other better. Did you actually watch the film or just read the synopsis?

I think it would. I've had experiences not disimilar. But I guess you can only go by what you know. As for subtlety...? Well, it's an 80s teen comedy -- what were you expecting?? By those standards it IS subtle. lol Certainly more so than ANY of Hughes' other films.

...and congratulations on totally missing MY point. I never had such arbitrary black and white definitions (or to use your jargon, templates) for anyone that I knew in high school at any stage. So aside from cultural difference, I simply couldn't relate to the film's characters.

You must just be better than everyone else then because the people I knew at school pigeon-holed everyone. I was the film geek.

Vampyr - marvellous atmosphere squandered on a badly structured screenplay, anti-climatic ending and intentionally hard to understand dialogue. Still enjoy it though

Lots - and I mean LOTS - of Shaw Brothers films. From about 1974 onwards their output seemed to degenenerate into bland conveyer belt stodgy messes that may as well have gone straight to tv

Those Stephen Chow gambling comedies - oh the pain, the pain of it all!!!!!!!!!

Which Shaws films in particular?
I enjoyed "Invincible Shaolin" "5 Venoms" "Opium and the Kung Fu Master", "Spiritual Boxer" etc.

All of those actually lol

Plus: Shaolin Martial Arts, Dirty Ho, Challenge of the Masters, Executioners From Shaolin, etc. Doesn't help the fans tend to overhype all of them to ridiculous levels

And yet, I can always enjoy an indie old school kung fu film

The 60s Shaw films were better made on the whole... but you really can't lump all the 70s output together. Latter day Shaws still produced some terrific films. (Heroes of the East, My Young Auntie, The Five Venoms, Eight-Diagram Pole-Fighter, etc).

All Coen brothers work I've ever seen. I simply dislike their directing style. It's all average to me, of the ones I've seen. Including the gratuitous No Country and overrated Fargo.

Anyone else think Kiss,Kiss,Bang Bang was very much overpraised? i watched it a couple of times,it was reasonable but not the great film i'd heard about.
