I didn't like this as much as Spirited Away. I probably need to re-watch it, like I did Spirited Away to consider it a true classic.

It got all weird near the end with big weird monsters appearing from nowhere.

Erm, what? lol

Spirited Away and Akira have no comparison, and what are you talking about weird monsters appearing from nowhere, Tetsuo's power goes out of control and he mutates, that's all :?

There is, in that they're both anime. My only comparison between the two.

Monsters, mutate, you got what I meant. It's still stupid. I quite liked it up until then. I don't recall any of the power of Spirited Away, which too has mutated monsters.

I'm with Salty on this one.

I wouldn't like many films if I didn't give them another chance:

* T3 - I hated this the first time, enjoyed it the second, even if obviously it's no way a keeper.
* Musa - I thought it was okay the first time, very good (International Cut) the second.
* Wickerman - Okay the first, excellent the second
Spirited Away - Okay the first, excellent the second.

But yes sometimes you just know, it's not for you.

Also depends who I watch em with, I get dragged to the cinema once I have seen a film before, just to go out with other peeps :D so I end up seeing some films 2 or even 3 times in the cinema.

99.9% of the time I go on my own to the cinema. Most of my mates:

A: See shite!
B: Don't go at all and solely watch bootlegs!

I've seen the odd film twice at the cinema but it's almost always a waste of money. It's usually either something that I disliked the first time or it's something I don't want to see again so soon anyway.

I have a cinema pass, so I dont really pay if I go anyway :D last film I saw 2 times was The Spirit, far from the best of the year, but hey. Well I also saw Watchmen 2 times, and will make it 3 soon :D

I go 50% of the time on my own, I try to drag people there :D

I don't bother any more. They rarely want to see "real" movies, just Hollywood shite. I only pay £4.50 a ticket, so price isn't a concern for me.

I enjoyed going to the arthouse cinema in Sheffield when I was a student there, only cost £3 and it was a nice place, nice people (i.e. no talking through the films) and great films shown. But I can't be arsed to go to the cinema in Cleethorpes, the picture and sound quality can be utter shite and it's a ripoff.

I love that about Arthouse cinemas, respectful people and decent pricing. I only ever go to a Multiplex when I have to. Unlike Multiplexes, you never get tossers talking about their grocery shopping or kids running around because their parents are using the cinema as a babysitter .

You also seem to get people who actually know how to set up a projector at arthouse cinemas, in multiplexes it can be any old bastard who doesn't have a fucking clue (apparently at the Cleethorpes one there's a dead old guy who can't even see properly, I'm inclined to believe it).

I went to the cinema every week (sometimes twice a week) in the afternoon when I was a teenager. Was kind of a fleapit but it was home to me. I could get a ticket, a hotdog and a drink for just over a fiver. Those were the days. When I went to see QOS the ticket alone cost me £6.30 for a matinee screening. Forget about food and drink which would've pushed me over a tenner. And they wonder why, oh, why people download and shit?

Prices nowadays are just nuts. Not just at the cinema (which have always been pretty damn high), but today I went to KFC, where I paid 10 euro for 18 hotwings, and that was excluding the sauce(!).

Gawd I miss Hong Kong, where prices are still normal, simply because they would be pricing themselfs out of the market if they wouldnt be normal.

It's all relative Yi, for the most part.

Sure food in America for example is cheaper but other things they have it worse of. I cannot speak for Holland but healthcare in the UK is something we take for granted. I've never ever had to think that if I get ill I won't be seen. This is the reality for millions of Americans.

Back on topic:

Don't you have any independent cinemas in your area Mark? For me it's about £8 in my multiplex (£6.30 is cheap), £5.50 in my independent or £4.50 if you're a member (£25 a year plus 3 free tickets). Screw food, eat before you go. Why pay for overpriced junk food? I so tend to get an overpriced beer in my local cinemas but hey we're talking £3 big deal.

Besides do you honestly expect to be able to get a ticket plus food for £5 in 2009? Times move on and naturally things get more expensive. In our parents day it would've probably been £1-2. And?

They could make it free and many people would still download, cost is only a small reason why people download, it's mostly laziness.

For me, the cinema has always been about much more than the cost or movie. It's the experience, going out and enjoying it on a big screen. Going out to the cinema sure beats staying at home, staying in sucks! It would have to cost loads more for me not to go.

No. We have a Cineworld which is 30 mins out of town by bus and an Odeon which is on a better bus route but situated in an area you wouldn't normally hang about in. Too expensive to use taxis, natch. We have an Arts theatre in town which costs almost a fiver for a ticket despite being subsidised by the taxpaper(!) They show selected releases (I saw The Dark Night there) but they're small screens and you're not even allowed to bring in food. They have an expensive bar where drinks cost more than the average pub. The glory days are long gone.

Cheap IF you have it. Believe it or not, Brad, there are people in this country who don't spread cash the way you do. Some of us need to find bargains and value. People who base their weekly shopping on what they can afford. You seem completely incapable of understanding that you live a comparitavely privilaged lifestyle. Lucky you, but don't mock others.

All I know is that the consumer pays thru the nose so Tom Cruise can get his 10th summer home in Aspen. Maybe that doesn't bother you? But it's clear that prices are jacked up to fund the over-privilaged. I have no problem with cinemas, etc, making a profit, but the margins are too high, and it's the consumer who always pays most. The question is shouldyou be able to get a ticket plus food for a fiver today? I don't see why not?

Cineworld £11.99 a month for as many films as you like :D still if you spend cash wise, its still nearly £150 a year.

I am off there today to see 2 films back to back, would normally be £15 as one of them is in 3D.

But I have to travel as well by car over 30 miles! hard to get to without a car thats for damn sure.

I heard that cinemas barely make anything off the tickets and that's why they have to charge so much for food, apparently most of their income comes from the food because the film studios take nearly all the box office earnings.

Do they show more foreign language films than multiplexes? If so the size of screen wouldn't bother me. My local arthouse has a much smaller screen to my Odean but it's such a better cinema I couldn't care less.

I once smuggled a burger into said cinema, boy it stank :D. Just smuggle it in.

Give it a rest. I'm so bored of your "I'm so poor and you're not" bollocks. £3 is not a lot of money for EVERYONE unless you're homeless. You've no fucking idea how much I earn so don't presume you now me. Privileged? I spent a year unemployed, yep so privileged. Obviously there are worse people off but neither of us are homeless and are privileged to have Internet access. A bit of perspective Mark.
Markgway wrote:You seem completely incapable of understanding that you live a comparitavely privilaged lifestyle.
Sorry because you live in Africa, please, get over your "I'm so unfairly treated" bullshit.
Markgway wrote:Lucky you, but don't mock others.
Dude it's £3, not £30 or even £5.
Markgway wrote:The question is shouldyou be able to get a ticket plus food for a fiver today? I don't see why not?
Maybe you should but you're acting like it's realistic and it simply is not, in the UK anyway.

Besides what sort of food are you're going to get anyway? Some junk food, yummy! Eat at home first then go out, problem sorted. There are bigger things to get stressed over.

If you find the prices too high, eat before hand. It's not rocket science.

Maybe Hollywood films but I cannot see all film studios working like that.

It's the film distributors who are getting all the cash from your cinema ticket, so yes about 95% of what's released each year on British screens is earning the cinemas showing it fuck all.

I heard on the Mark Kermode show (yes it's called that :D), some cinemas are "charging" extra if it's in 3D. Shocking!

Thankfully it's unlikely the gimmick will ever interest me or my local arthouse will ever bother.

Some say its to cover the cost of the glasses, some say to cover the install costs, some say the companies want more cash!

Still you get Glasses, not crappy pieces of paper with red and green plastic in em. Full black shades with clear lenses in em.

I went to see Monsers VS Aliens 3D today, its fucking amazing the 3D. It is NO gimmic, see it then comment on it, its pretty much mind blowing when the camera is set up perfectly. I am not talking about flashing in your face shots, I am on about pretty much every shot in the film feels far more real, its such an odd effect. Unlike the shit in the old days with the red and green glasses, which frankly were bile.

I have seen 3 so far wit this new tech, and frankly it really is an experience, shame people cannot SHUT THE HELL UP!!! the audience keeps commenting on it and waving their arms around trying to grab things, morons! Kids I understand, but adults, grow up. Thts the only drawback to the 3D films, morons in the crowd.

You rebel.
Give it a rest. I'm so bored of your "I'm so poor and you're not" bollocks.
Then stop telling everyone here how "cheap" everything is.
£3 is not a lot of money for EVERYONE unless you're homeless.
Lol... the world according to Brad...
You've no fucking idea how much I earn so don't presume you now me.
You're right, I don't. I'm basing my comments on your attitude, not your job. If you're low paid, it doesn't come across.
Privileged? I spent a year unemployed, yep so privileged.
Then you'd think that you would know better what it's like not to have money to spend willy nilly.
Obviously there are worse people off but neither of us are homeless and are privileged to have Internet access. A bit of perspective Mark.
Of course there are faaaaaaaaar worse off people than us. I have a roof over my head, but I'm also accutely aware that life is tough, and that money doesn't grow on trees. You give the impression (which may be wrong) of someone who never worries about cashflow.
Sorry because you live in Africa, please, get over your "I'm so unfairly treated" bullshit.
Never said I was unfairly treated. Where did I say that? Where did I blame you for my finances? Or my cultural background?
Dude it's £3, not £30 or even £5.
It's the principal, not the amount. The things you say just tend to get up my nose. I try not to let them, but sometimes they do.
Besides what sort of food are you're going to get anyway? Some junk food, yummy!
I like junk food! Give me a cheeseburger and a coke and I'm happy. :D

If I buy food to eat in the cinema I smuggle popcorn/candy in (not paying cinema prices!)
Cinema tickets are £7 for me now. When we go on group outings we don't get a discount either like our group used to so its still £7 anyway (!)
