A film about a guy who attempts to win on India's version of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire - sounds like a typical "underdog" story but I heard its very good:

rom the director of “Train Spotting”, Danny Boyle, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ tells the story of Jamal Malik - an 18-year-old orphan living on the streets of Mumbai whose life suddenly changes when he finds himself one question away from winning 20 million rupees. Arrested on suspicion of cheating and desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the powerful and dramatic story of how his life on the streets has provided him with each of the answers.

I've heard very good things about this one. A big portion is in Hindi.

The first Danny Boyle film that I've seen that didn't suffer from the 'Sunk by a bad third act' syndrome that's plagued the rest the likes of The Beach, 28 Days Later and Sunshine. A beautifully told fable with top notch editing and cinematography.

To be honest, I was never sold on Dev Patel's performance. His dopey facial expressions killed it for me. He was easily outshone by supporting actors, such as the ever dependable Irrfan Khan. The slimy, big ego'ed, game show host, played Anil Kapoor, would steal every scene that he was in.

I fully agree with Mark Kermode that the advertising campaign that this film received, especially the posters, was entirely inappropriate and highly misleading.

To be fair to Dev, that is precisely why he was picked. I thought he played the part perfectly. Otherwise I completely agree.

I'll be getting the BD for sure. I'd say Trainspotting has no problem in the third act. I thought The Beach was rubbish.

Could you link to your review, brad? I'd like to know your whole opinion.

I haven't seen Trainspotting (nor Millions), hence it not being mentioned. Also yes, The Beach was shit, but the third act was far worse than the rest of the film.

I don't have a review, just general media sound bites of Danny Boyle saying he wanted an Indian actor but they're all to buff.

I thought you'd seen Trainspotting, my mistake. It's very good, only bettered by Slumdog.

I rate Trainspotting, 28 Days Later & Shallow Gave over Slumdog...

Slumdog was still a 4.5/5 and the best film I've seen this year
