UK release: King Boxer

Post by grim_tales »

Hey,
I was browsing and saw that this will also be released in March, like 36th Chamber.
I have the R3 IVL and have up until now been happy with it but would it be worth upgrading to the Momentum disc? Like 36th Chamber, it has the same extras as the DD.
Any opinion on the video quality, subs etc? :) I can always Ebay the R3's.

UK release here:

http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/8116354/ ... oduct.html

A "film-maker's commentary" sounds interesting, I'd rather listen to that (on King Boxer) than the RZA on 36th Chamber

No one knows about the subs yet - but should be worth the upgrade regardless for the original mono and progressive image.

The extras aren't anything special - I owned the DD edition. Interviews with Lau Ka-Wing (choreographer) and Jeong Chang-Hwa (director) being the main attraction. Lau comes across as a likeable guy, Jeong rather arrogant.

Don't bother with the commentary or journalist interviews unless you want to know about the film's impact in America. The com track has a typically foul-mouthed Tarantino and a couple of journalists (only one of whom seems to know enough to contribute).

To be honest if you want to know stuff about King Boxer you're better off asking here... lol

I'll wait for a review but I'm hoping at least the same set of subs will be used. :) DD's subs on Come Drink With Me were awful.
Did the R3 KB only have 5.1?

R3 was remix only. Quite a poor one from accounts

I've had the R4 dvd for a while - slight glitch on the R1 disc. I enjoy it but much prefer Chinese Boxer. Lo Lieh as a genuine nice guy is a rather odd thing, and i find the rapid cutting in the fights rather disorientating. great fun though

What glitch?

Grim, wouldn't it make more sense to upgrade on those dvds that you're not happy with, as opposed to dvds Ivan is not happy with? If you're fine with the IVL dvd, then keep it. Why buy a new edition if you can't notice any difference in quality?

I've got the DD, but no time to watch it. Damn.

Hmm. Good point. Well in the case of 36th Chamber, a genuine anamoprphic image is an upgrade.

I'm getting the DD. Worth it for the anamorphic transfer and original mono.

The subs on the R3 have their own problems.

You're right there, just saying the R3 subs are superior :)

I'd hold off buying DD's versions as the subs still suck. The only advantage is indeed the mono and progressive non-converted video.

As said in the other topic, Momentum are re-doing them for this release. That suggests such improvements aren't out of the question for any future releases.

Still upset about the trailers, booooooohooooo :( !

Are the original HK trailers not included?

The disc broke up into interlaced frames at one point on the region 1. this is thankfully not on the r4 disc!

An export trailer for 'King Boxer' does exist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycghwUt8FPc), but isn't included on any release. I've never come across a Chinese one.

I was talking about the US Warner trailer, which is included (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Qyddrw5Oeo). With the trailer, I also have the teaser (which isn't on any release it would seem). Both could have been put into HD and restored compared to the interlaced video-rip, etc, but it can't happen due to legal shit.

As for '36th Chamber Of Shaolin', people don't seem to know there's two existing original trailers from Shaws themselves. Each release only includes one of them:

IVL: English (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwszzPghsFc).
DD: Chinese (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gis0O_UIccw).

Maybe I'll keep the IVL of 36th Chamber for the English trailer then ;) Thanks for clearing that up BTW.
I'll have a look at my King Boxer IVL.

I hope DD does more Shaws. I want Crippled Avengers, Boxer From Shantung, Chinese Boxer. Less crummy comedies, more bloody goodness!

It may have been on DVD Talk Ivan, can't remember.
5 Venoms is amusing when it plays the same music as at the start of Holy Grail, you're tempted to say "All the action directors have been sacked" :D

It doesn't mention Crippled Avengers.

I want my Crippled Avengers dammit. And the One-Armed Swordsman sequels, too.

You say ONLY advantage like it's only something minor. The R3 of CDWM is letterboxed and remixed. The subs on the DD cannot possibly be so bad as to warrant a preference of inferior image and audio.
