The Godfather (1972): 4/5

A long movie, and a bit slow in places but a good movie. Al Pacino was outstanding but Marlon Brando seemed to be mumbling. He looked old even in 1972, and obviously felt talking was best done with the mouth barely open, and in a voice on which all Brando impersonations appear to be based. Can't believe he won an Oscar!

Though he didn't accept it.
I had heard about the famous "horse's head" scene but hadnt seen it before.
It was interesting how Pacino's character changed, I thought he became a complete bastard

Not sure why this was an 18 back in the day, the BBFC downgraded it to a 15.
The remastered transfer on the DVD is amazing.
Interestingly, the Johnny Fontaine character is played by Al Martino, in 1952 he had the 1st ever UK Number One hit, with Here In My Heart.

Although Brando did have a reputation as a mumbler already in the 50's.

Again, long time since I saw the film, but I recall some scenes being very brutal, such as the kiling of James Caan

In Finland the film went through the same downgrading in the 80's. There was a new censorship law (now dead and buried, thankfully) that prohibited 18 rated films from being distributed on video. The Godfather went immediately from 18 to 16. They didn't dare to ban The Godfather

I meant he looked old in the movie, maybe it was make-up as you say.
Oh yes, that scene you mention was quite brutal I think.

I liked the music in the film, it really added to the atmosphere.

Yes he was mumbling and yes his mouth was full of cotton wool. Great film but like you say slow. I don't think it's as good as most say but still very good. Part 2 is better. I even like Part 3.

That some dumbass law there Hung. How long did it last?

He put cotton balls in his mouth for effect and was made to look older in make-up. See Last Tango in Paris made the same year for his "regular" look.

Officially from mid 80's to early 2000's. But in the late 90's when dvd made it's breakthrough the ratings had become more lenient and a lot of movies that had been cut on VHS were now released uncut on dvd with a 16 rating (this included films such as Lethal Weapon, Die Hard and The Thing).

The irony was that the law never applied to TV. Robocop was cut to shreads on video, but played uncut on TV. Robocop was actually a pretty funny case all around. Originally the video distributor cut about 10 minutes because they wanted to be sure it would be passed with a 16 rating. Then in the early 2000's when the dvd was released, it was uncut and rated 15!

Today, there is practically no film censorship at all in Finland. No normal film would ever get censored or banned.

The old ratings were like 18, 16, 14... They later changed it, so now it's 18, 15, 13 etc. A person two years under the age limit can see the film in cinema with a guardian. 18 is an exception, though.

The reality is a bit different, of course. I remember growing a beard myself when I was underage and needed to see an 18 rated film

Also, because I'm blonde and thus have light facial hair, it isnt even 'cool' to grow a stuble...

Facial hair sucks.

I never tried growing a fullgrown beard though. Maybe one day when I'm a recluse living in a cave somewhere...

And he's pleased he cannot. Tom managed to ruin one of the T2 scenes for me by posting a bloody screen capture. I now see it every time but before always missed it, bliss.

Really enjoyed it a lot!

Even if it does show Quentin's "kid in a candy shop" approach to film-making, as if he said "I'll put that in as it looks cool"

What other reason could there be for the Shaws logo at the beginning

I loved some of the music though, like the pan-pipe music at the end and the spaghetti Western music (Death Rides a Horse), swordplay, blood, revenge, martial arts..

He does like to borrow a lot though, some music is from Master of the Flying Guillotine (I think) and one scene rips off Lady Snowblood.
Bang Bang by Nacy Sinatra is awesome.

Brando was a dire actor at the best of times, sticking crap make up on his fat face just made him even worse. Yet everyone loves him and no one can say a bad word about him and his "Performance".

I do as he fucking sucked, in pretty much every film he ever went near to. I am very glad we don not have to suffer him in movies nowadays.
