Fast forward to 2 minutes 10 seconds (start playing when you see the Rambo clip and from then on):

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/markkermode/ ... t_two.html

My god, Kermode commented on little old me :D. Not only that but my comment is Kermode's favourite. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I would show you what I actually said but for reasons unknown the BBC Mods have removed my comments (before anyone asks no you cannot delete them): http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/markkermode/ ... _good.html

Which is odd when Kermode was clearly allowed to read them. I didn't swear or anything like that. I know it's been deleted, as my other comment (posted just before it) is still there.

EDIT: For those who're interested, here's Mark's blog: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/markkermode/

p.s - I didn't say I loved Rambo 4 THREE times btw, once was enough. Oh and I stand by my comments. Rambo 4 is a decent action film.

I'm just reading through the comments in the first link. It seems my feelings for Rambo 4 are not alone.

Here are a couple:

auldreekie wrote:

Dear MK Don,

Although I agree with you about Rambo being a load of rubbish, the was a valid point about Michael Bay needing to take note. You mentioned the bayification effect in Wanted, and I'm sorry but you're wrong! Had he made that film or Rambo there would have been a fraction of the swearing and grotesque violence, so it could have fitted neatly into the 12A bracket. At least Stallone and Bekmambetov had the balls to make it a full blooded 18- I'm an adult, when I want to watch an action film, I want all the stops pulled out!

sfjh500 wrote:

For me, it is like high school musical 3, It does exactly what you want it to do. Don't misunderstand me, it is a terrible film but it is a great Rambo film. It had to have people counting "death to minute ratio"; That's what Rambo is about. The first film is actually not bad but since then it turned into Rambo killing as many non descript evil foreigners as possible. Without removing all dialogue, I don't know how this film could have been a better Rambo film. If it had been anything else fans of the previous films would've complained.

I know. I loved that bit too, hilarious :D. It's Brad-ay-von btw ;).

Mark is probably a bit too old to appreciate an action when he sees one. I don't always agree but I love how brutally honest he is. You never doubt he's giving genuine responses.

EDIT: Does anyone know how I can save the video to my hard disk? All the Flash downloaders I can find only work with Youtube like videos, not those saved inside the HTML file.

Thought so. Where does this name come from, anyway?

I wish I had some witty reason, like I'm a porn star and my name is: Brad Avon but in reality the answer is pretty boring:

Up until 2007 I lived in a town called Bradford on Avon and back when I started using the Internet (about 15 years ago) I thought it would be cool to have my e-mail as: name@WhereILive.com.

Bradford on Avon was too long so I shortened it. Today I think the reasoning is a bit shit but obviously it stuck. I've used it ever since. It would be weird to use another username now. I couldn't do it.

I'd wager you know what needs to be in an action film before it can be considered an action classic though.

Kudos to Brad for being Mark's "favourite" and for standing up for 'Rambo' (which I also enjoyed).

Who is that joker?

He's not too bad at performing (loved how he plays with the listener's expectations on his 2008 Best of List).

But the man doesn't understand cinema. He doesn't like good movies, and he dislikes bad movies for the wrong reasons.

I sometimes disagree with Kermode's opinions... but I like his style and wit.

Can you elaborate?

He said something about Sex and the City being terrible because the whole film is about handbags and then at the end it tries to say there's more to life than handbags. I haven't seen the film, but that sounded like a reason to like the film.

Hottie and the Nottie (or what is that film called) being repulsive because it has a message that ugliness can be fixed with plastic surgery. Well, that sounds fucking hilarious. Not that I have any intention to watch the film, but again sounds like this film does have merits.

Rambo is stupid and disgustingly violent and blah blah

"Mamma Mia so bad it's good". Another idiot who doesn't have the balls to admit what he really likes but instead uses the old shield "oh I know this movie isn't good, please don't judge me, I'm really an intelligent person, I just like the movie, but I KNOW it sucks, really, don't leave mee..."

Sorry, not very accurate explanations but I already forgot most of what he said and can't be bothered to listen to him again.

Well it is a repulsive message...
"Mamma Mia so bad it's good".
I've seen films that are crap but entertaining. Commando for example.

Why thank you.

I was most chuffed when I saw it. I did pause it though, just in case I was about to be ranted at :D.
HungFist wrote:But the man doesn't understand cinema.
He most certainly does.
HungFist wrote:He doesn't like good movies, and he dislikes bad movies for the wrong reasons.
That's what makes him so good. He gives his honest opinion. Sure I often disagree but I know he's saying exactly what he thinks. There's no many critics you can say that about.

Plus like Mark says Kermode's wit can be hilarious. Check out his Pirates 3 rant. I was laughing so hard it nearly hurt. He's definitely a love or hate critic though, many people cannot stand him. He equally has a very loyal following.
luckystars wrote:Cheers for alerting me to his blog ;)
No worries. I presume you check out the podcast too?
HungFist wrote:He said something about Sex and the City being terrible because the whole film is about handbags and then at the end it tries to say there's more to life than handbags. I haven't seen the film, but that sounded like a reason to like the film.
It's well known your taste in films sucks :D. Seriously you do have a very different taste from many people.

He got bashed big time for hating Sex in the City, women said he was sexist and he didn't like it because he's a man. Which is bollocks, he didn't like it because he thinks it's trash (which it probably is). Kermode is certainly not sexist.

I was surprised Mark hated Rambo so much, given that he adores exploitation and while I doubt Rambo is exploitation it shares some of the same things and lets face it a massive portion of exploitation is utter shite.
HungFist wrote:"Mamma Mia so bad it's good". Again so, so wrong. Kermode is intelligent enough to know the film is so poorly made but he still loved it. What's wrong with that? If you listened to his comments, you'd know that ;). Which btw, for someone who hates him so much you've got a lot to quote from. What gives?

I wish I'd used my real name now, I cannot show it to my mates now :(. Still I can show it to you guys :D.

I never said I hate him.

Judging by those three video I viewed, his taste is just terribly boring. He likes mainstream plastic like Son of Rambow, and bashes movies a respectable critic isn't allowed to like. His reasoning shows terrible lack of sense of humour and understanding for B-cinema elements (those Sex and the City and Hottie and Nottie examples). The only interesting thing was that he named High School Musical 3 as one of his favourite movies.

You probably cannot be bothered but Mark's tastes are far from boring. You'd actually have a lot in common film wise. Like I said he loves exploitation.
HungFist wrote:He likes mainstream plastic like Son of Rambow
I've not seen it but as far as I know Son of Rambow isn't mainstraim or plastic.

I'll repeat what you once told me about Japanese exploitation:

You really need to see more.

I've not seen Part 3 and he definitely overrated it but I quite like Parts 1 and 2. When they're not singing, boy it's cheesy though.

At least tell me, you thought it was cool I was mentioned? :D.

Doesn't mean he understands it. Half of the exploitation geeks are just like any dumb viewers; repeating other people's opinions and nothing more. Ask them why their favourite film is good and they'll tell you "well, because it's a classic".

I'm not saying Mark is one of them because I don't know. But I would be interested in knowing what exploitation films he likes.

It's both. It's irritatingly conventional. Much like a stereotype Disney family film (although not produced by Disney).

Some critics as well as normal viewers are suffering from this psychological disease. They don't dare have an own opinion. They rate Casablanca 5/5 even if they fell asleep watching it. They feel it woud be againts social norms (or whatever you want to call them) to bash a classic like that. And the other way round. Certain films you're not allowed to consider good.

Again, I'm not saying Mark is necessarily one of them. It was just an observation based on those three videos that he happend to bash movies a critic shouldn't like.

You're right. But my comment was only meant meant to reflect my initial thoughts after those three videos I watched.

So your only criteria for liking a film is it must be Japanese, Hung? ;)
I haven't seen Casablanca yet. I know you didnt mention these per se but Seven Samurai is almost 3 and half hours long but in no way is that film boring, it's brilliant and a cinema classic. Gone With The Wind is long, but a superb epic drama/romance.
Groundhog Day is an American classic IMO.
I'll watch The Godfather soon.
As for Hottie/Nottie, the general consensus I read is that its shit, and the plot sounds in poor taste.

I'm not a fan so don't tend to pay too much attention, but off the top of my head:

The early work of Wes Craven, Sam Raimi and George Romero. He also loves Tinto Brass. Okay I guess some of those aren't exactly exploitation movies.

There are others too, like Italian director's such as Argento. I do think he gives a slightly biased upon to work with an exploitation edge. Oh and horror too, he's a big fan of that. Otherwise I'd say he's never in the slightest bit biased.

Someone like Mark and Eva would be better placed to give you examples. Eva listens to him too.
HungFist wrote:Again, I'm not saying Mark is necessarily one of them. It was just an observation based on those three videos that he happend to bash movies a critic shouldn't like.
Trust me on this one, he's not afraid to go against the critic grain. Like you said he loved High School Musical 3.
