Cool. The quality should be good. I may double dip DOBW if the AV is decent. Roadshow is a good sign.
EvaUnit02 wrote:I'm guessing they recorded the commentary themselves
:o . It's a pity EE don't do this more often.

I'm not sure why it's not an Eastern Eye release.
EvaUnit02 wrote:I can't wait for the Season 2 set in Spring (so Q1 in other words) 2006 (the current tentative date).
I really hope they stick to it this time. Even though it will probably be expensive.

I don't want to buy "Fire Walk with Me" until I've seen all the series first. It would only spoil FWWM.
EvaUnit02 wrote:There's an identical R4 from Paramount, but I opted for the R2 since it was cheaper.
That's nuts but not surprising. It's cheaper to buy HK DVDs from CD WOW than DDDHouse.
EvaUnit02 wrote:Brad, I highly recommend you take the plunge and get S1. Utterly cracking series. Don't bother with the R1, since it's missing the 90min pilot (essential viewing since it sets everything, introduces the characters, etc.).
Yep I know and am going to. I've seen:

Mulholland Drive - My fave, a masterpiece.
Lost Highway - Trash, what was Lynch thinking.
Blue Velvet - Excellent but not quite as good as Mulholland Drive (still very good though).
EvaUnit02 wrote: Was my first taste of Lynch, now I just have to see more. I've ordered the R1 Wild at Heart SE from cd-wow and R1 Blue Velvet SE from dvdboxoffice.
I rarely use DVDBoxOffice. I'm surprised you find them cheap, they're good but others are much better.
EvaUnit02 wrote: Know where I can pick the Dutch 2-discer of Mulholland Dr. for cheap - preferably under 20 euro?
I have this and it's tops. Easily the best but I doubt you'll get it for 20€. I picked it up in Holland for about £20 but the best online I believe is here:

28.99€ / NZD$51.73 / £20: http://www.dvdzone2.com/dvd/detail.asp?id=120267

It's worth it. The DTS is great and it has much more extras than any others (excluding the French DVD which doesn't have DTS and has semi-forced subs).

Sure it's a bit expensive but isn't to bad for a 2 Disc lovely set. The film is most definitely worth it. I doubt the French DVD is cheaper (if you play the film and remove the subs with the remote it works, it's just there is no option to do this on the menus or so I've read).
EvaUnit02 wrote:NZ is virtually 3rd world in regards to games/DVDs/etc releases, hell there's heaps of R4 DVDs released in Oz which never make it over here.
I wonder why that is. Sure the population is only 3M but still.
EvaUnit02 wrote:How is the Kino set packaged - A 5-disc digipack or 5 amarays in a cardboard slipcase? I hope it's the latter, then I can give away/sell the R1 CE and keep my R2 DVD in the free slot.
Yep that would work very nicely. The R1 looks a bit out of place anyway as it's from a different studio.

It's a cardboard box with 5 amarays inside it. It's much cheaper than buying them separately. It contains all of WKW's work except:

Ashes of Time
ITMFL
2046
EvaUnit02 wrote:Speculation based on past trends. I meant what's your source on Sony owning the film and/or any DVD info?

Something that's universal to all cultures, pop music is awful where ever you go. The Faye Wong song was terrible IMO. At least it wasn't as bad as her god awful "Eyes on Me", the main theme of the craptacular Final Fantasy 8.
If you think Faye's theme to CKE was awful, don't blame Faye, blame The Cranberries ;)

Nope blame Faye Wong. The song was never originally intended to for pop music (The Cranberries don't do pop).

It was Faye who turned it into a pop song (is it really a pop song when Faye sings it? I think not). It was originally a Folk/Soft-Rock song with a heavy Irish tinge.
Tom2681 wrote:For some strange reason, The Cranberries' Dreams sound better in mandarin IMHO. :alien:
What?, What? WTF? I'm speechless (okay not quite :D ).

Faye Wong is lovely but she doesn't even come close to the dulcet tones of Dolores O'Riordan, no way.

The Cranberries are only one of the best bands on the PLANET. It's a pity they've gone down hill a bit in the last few years but "Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?" and the masterpiece that is "No Need To Argue" are real gems.

Nope I will not allow blasphemy such as this on the forum

You find Dreams aggressive, interesting. Personally I love the 3 you mentioned, especially Zombie it has so much power. It may have more meaning to me than you though (I don't know).

Fair enough. I'm a huge Shania Twain fan (Pop with a heavy Country Tinge). I've seen her 2-3 times live (twice in the space on 12 months).

You mean from the pic in my sig ?
Yeah, used to be. For a year.

-------------------------
Since this is a Wong Kar-Wai thread I might as well post this here:

What's up with Ashes of Time ?
How come the greatest Wu-Xia-Pian ever made (with perfect storyline, script, cast, crew, choregrapher, editing, cinematographer and music) hasn't been properly released on DVD yet ?

I've read the DVDTimes comparison, which is why I bought the Mei Ah disc, but it's still one of the worst DVDs I have ever seen.

I could swear that I read once that Ashes of Time was going to be released as part of the Wong Kar-Wai boxset. I even recall seeing a temp covert art for the R2 French boxset with "Ashes of Time" written on it.

Then it was removed from the boxset and set for a release in early 2005.

Then...Nothing. What do you think happened ?

It was. What titles are in said box set? Is it up to the usual French quality?

I sense lots of legal wranglings ala OUATIC4 & 5.

I've yet to see this, it's next on my WKW marathon (and is delaying it's completion). The quality is so god awful I can't bring myself to watch it. I must though.

I own the Mei Ah too. I'm surprised Mei Ah haven't remastered this in their "Remastered range" (i.e - Hard Boiled). Anything would be better.

As I have demonstrated on page 6 of my french thread, the french dvds aren't too bad compared to their Kino and Artificial Eye counterparts.

I hope so, but I'm afraid it might be more serious than that.
If TF1 was planning on releasing it, it must mean that they had the rights.
Maybe there's something wrong with the original print, that's why nobody's releasing it :?

That's funny, I'm in the middle of my WKW marathon as well. :D

2046 arrived today and I watched it. It was nothing short of EXCELLENT. The improvement of the story-crafting quality in a gap of just 10 years between this and Chungking is staggering, WKW can only get better. I have to see ITMFL now - Must see why Chow won't let go of the past so he can pursue new loves. Tony Leung was superb (as always), I still reckon Zhang Ziyi's acting abilities are quite limited (still gorgeous though :D).
bradavon wrote:Cool. The quality should be good. I may double dip DOBW if the AV is decent. Roadshow is a good sign.
Yeah, Roadshow are generally good from my experiences. Their port overs of the New Line LOTR EEs are superb.
I'm not sure why it's not an Eastern Eye release.
Maybe they consider WKW too "arthouse" to release as a EE? Aside from the Kurosawa films, EE generally seem to have released action, horror and thrillers. Maybe they thought they'd need a good range of title on differing ends of the various spectrums if they hope to establish their "Director's Suite" label as a "Criterion of R4"? But by that logic, the Kurosawa titles would've been chucked under that banner too.
I don't want to buy "Fire Walk with Me" until I've seen all the series first. It would only spoil FWWM.
I'm not gonna get FWWM for a while yet either. I'd get the R3K release - The film disc is pretty much identical to the R1 and the 2nd disc contains "The Art of David Lynch" doco you would otherwise have to purchase for mega-bucks through davidlynch.com. I wouldn't watch it until I'd seen S2 though.
Lost Highway - Trash, what was Lynch thinking.
I was planning to skip Lost Highway for the time being anyway, since there's no decent DVD release of it as far as I can tell and Universal will prob pull a SE out of their sleeves one of these days. I'll definately see it eventually and make up my own mind.
I rarely use DVDBoxOffice. I'm surprised you find them cheap, they're good but others are much better.
It's a combination of the free shipping and good CDN-NZD conversion rates. Depends on the DVD I'm after really. They're always the cheapest when it comes to games though. A new release of a high profile title is only like $70-80NZD (My Xbox is chipped and I have a US Gamecube.), whereas the same titles in local shops are $90-130NZD.

Oh yeah, forgot it was a Di$ney release promoted by Tarantino. I'd rather not see his ugly mug bookending a film. Personally I don't think he's the "visionary" everyone thinks he is. He's made some entertaining popcorn movies, that's it IMO.

For how much I ended up paying in the end, 2046 HK LE's transfer was a bit disappointing. It was quite grainy and a little bit hazy at times.

I was half asleep when I ordered 2046 (and Full Alert remaster) from Yesasia. I didn't fill the cart enough to qualify for free shipping and ended up paying bloody $15NZD for the shipping. Wasn't till an hour later until I realised what I'd done and when I went to cancel the order it had already shipped (they're damn efficient in that department). Would've returned them, but Yesasia only refund in store credit and don't do it for shipping and it would've cost me $10-15 to post it back to them.

I'm really kicking myself now for not getting the Tartan from cd-wow as you can imagine. :banghead:

Jesus FUCKING christ, my eye are bleeding!
Image
I understand your pain Tony, I'd be angry too if my DVD sucked. I dearly hope this is a candidate for Meiah's remastered range.

Cool, The new R4 of Happy Together is only $30NZD locally.

Out Aug 17th. May pick it up on my way home from Uni one day, I'll wait for someone to review it (like Michaeldvd or dvd.net.au) first though.

No specs listings on the Roadshow site for R4 DoBW and ATB either.

Observation on 2046:-
I liked how all the actors spoke their native dialects/languages.

What's the story with Mandarin and Catonese interaction:- So native speakers of either dialect can understand perfectly the other one, but have trouble actually speaking it?

I watched ITMFL yesterday (the Criterion arrived a few days ago). Lovely film, but tbh I thought 2046 was better.

Madman are releasing 2046 in 1-disc and 2-disc SE flavours on 19th Oct. Looks like the only new extras is the exclusive Stephen Teo commentary and an exclusive WKW interview.

I may get the 1-disc edition if the PQ is good, the HK LE PQ wasn't very impressive IMO.

DISC ONE:

2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen
DD2.0, DD5.1 & DTS 5.1 Surround
English subtitles
Audio Commentary with STEPHEN TEO (AUTHOR OF "WONG KAR WAI" BFI)

DISC TWO:
Zhang Ziyi On Set (3:04mins)
Zhang Ziyi Interview (11:50mins)
Making of (37 mins)
Casta Diva Music Video (7:05mins)
2003 Promo (7mins)
Hong Kong Teaser
Hong Kong Trailer
Original Theatrical Trailer
Australian Exclusive interview with Wong Kar-Wai (16:29mins) TBC

The R4 covers of DOBW and ATGB are quite nice IMO, except for the ghastly ratings stickers.

On second thoughts I doubt I'll get this. I really can't see the AV being any better than the R1 these are small studios.

If the likes of Premier Asia, Columbia Tristar or Fortune Star were releasing this then fine but they're not.

The R1 quality is fine, the subs are good and it also has the Making Of.

It's not worth it just for the commentary and 5.1 remix, which I'm dubious of when bar 2046 and ITMFL WKWs films were all shot in DD2.0 and really don't need anymore. There simply isn't enough there to work with.
EvaUnit02 wrote:The R4 covers of DOBW and ATGB are quite nice IMO, except for the ghastly ratings stickers.
DOBW especially.

If the PQ is much, much better I'll get DOBW and sell my R1. I doubt I'll bother with ATGB the film isn't all that good.

I have higher hopes with Roadshow releasing these than HT from Madman.

LOL you can't have many films left to get.

Still as you're not going the R1 box set route you should be able to pick up the "best" versions of each film. DOBW and ATGB it's down to the R1 vs. forthcoming R4 versions. HT I'd probably get the R4.

That's it then isn't it bar AOT?
EvaUnit02 wrote:What's the story with Mandarin and Catonese interaction:- So native speakers of either dialect can understand perfectly the other one, but have trouble actually speaking it?
Good question. I know Hong Kongese can understand Mandarin and speak it too, in fact I'm sure all Asian Chinese no matter what their first language is can also speak Mandarin, it being the official government language.

I never noticed all the languages. I suspet WKW just liked the idea of all the languages. I wouldn't read to much into it.

FANTASTIC nice one Eva. I highly suspect I'll be getting the 2 discer.

They're also releasing 'Young Adam' which is supposed to be excellent. Avoid the R1 though it's cut to shreds (the MPAA have cut the sex scenes yet again).

It's nothing short of fantastic. Highly recommended. The extras are very meaty and lengthy; the AV is excellent - it doesn't turn into a pixellated mess when I go into maximum zoom on my player (a sign of a truly excellent transfer).
On second thoughts I doubt I'll get this. I really can't see the AV being any better than the R1 these are small studios.
I asked about the PQ of the HT Madman release on the wongkarwai.net forum. A moderator replied (before the forum was hacked) saying that according to his sources that it was the same transfer used for the R2 Artificial Eye release:(. Looks like the R4 is a dud then, wish I had proper confirmation.

Maybe. The total cost for the Roadshow releases would probably come to $60NZD if I bought 'em. Ah what the hell, I'll blind order DOBW off dvdcrave. Ezydvd says it's anamorphic w/ Catonese mono.
LOL you can't have many films left to get.
Hehe, yeah. Atlanticdvd have R4 Fallen Angels in stock now, so I'll hopefully get it by middle of next week (by the earliest).
That's it then isn't it bar AOT?
Yeah, I emailed MeiAh a couple weeks ago asking them to consider it for HD remaster. Their PUBLIC email is webmaster@hongkongmovie.com BTW. No replies yet (and I doubt I'll receive any).
I never noticed all the languages. I suspet WKW just liked the idea of all the languages. I wouldn't read to much into it.
Yeah, I noticed it straight away. Mandarin and Catonese both sound distinctly unique. Eg Ziyi and Gong Li were definitely speaking Mandarin; Tony and Faye (most probably Carina too, I can't remember) were definitely speaking Cantonese. None of them commented on dialect differences (I remember Brigitte Lin commented on Kaneshiro's good Mandarin in CE).

I could believe that. It's clear Madman have paid for the extras from Tartan and Mei Ah for 2046. It's a pity they didn't skip those two and go straight to TF1 Vidéo (the French DVD).

That one is so gorgeous.

Actually it's possible Madman are re-using the Tartan master for their R4 release with just the Making Of. from Mei Ah and a newly recorded commentary.

Post what you think of the AV please.

$60 is about the same as the R1 DVDs, for me anyway. It's annoying R4 DVDs never go down in price and the sales are rubbish. Not big enough population me thinks (20+4 million).

I've found reviews for the R4 releases of DOBW and ATGB.

On the picture quality:-
DOBW:-
dvdbits wrote:Video quality score: 1/5
The video transfer is a poor one (bit rate 4.5-5.5). There is extensive print damage, grain and video artefacts throughout. The print is quite dark in places and colours are somewhat muted. Details are at best ok.
ATGB:-
dvdbits wrote:Video quality score: 1/5
This is a generally poor video transfer (4-5 mbps), which does not look much better than an old video copy of the film. The colours are somewhat muted, there is grain, video artefacts and extensive print damage.
Looks like we can these R4's a miss, as well as R4 HT until there's an actual review. Good thing I decided not to blind buy R4 DOBW and ordered R4 Ong-Bak instead.
bradavon wrote: They're also releasing 'Young Adam' which is supposed to be excellent. Avoid the R1 though it's cut to shreds (the MPAA have cut the sex scenes yet again).
What is Young Adam? Some sort of Larry Clark-esque non-sense film?
EDIT: Oh I see, it's that Ewan McGregor incest flick. I remember hearing about that. I wouldn't be adverse to seeing that, since it's not Larry Clark-esque garbage. I tried watching Bully when it was TV (at like 11.30pm) earlier this year, but turned it off after about 30mins out of disgust.

It's graphic but in context regarding Young Adam but I've not seen it. My Mum thought it was very good.

As for those WKW flicks in a way what do you expect? The R1's only have minimal print damage but no version of DOBW and ATGB are first rate. I'd get the R1's now then (HT too).

They're at least dual layer. DVD Beaver make a point of saying the R1's are but the Tartan DVDs aren't.

We must be the only two people on Bullets to like WKW :D

p.s - I've just noticed the R4 WKW interview (the so called exclusive one) is currently TBC!

I love WKW as well. 3 or 4 of his flicks are in my all-time top 10/20 I think, with Days of Being Wild on a pretty rock-solid first place...

Dissappointed they screwed up a WKW release again :( How come they can fucking release mediocre movies from the 50's-70's into pristine, excellent 2-disc, dual-layered versions, making it look like they were shot yesterday, but they somehow can't release the visual masterworks of a filmmaking genius properly... !?

I almost picked up the remasted R3 in HK of DOBW, but decided against it when I heard the R4 was coming out. I think I'l continue my waiting for a good release (as I'm doing with so many movies...)

I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...

The R1 DVDs really aren't that bad. Fine really.

It's all down to the studio. What WB do with their old releases is amazing but they don't own titles such as the back catalogue from WKW + of course old Hollywood flicks were kept in much better condition.

What to do?

R1 2046 from Sony in December:

The R1 extras look like they have the edge (just) and Sony are renowned for their AV quality, Madman are not. The R4 has DTS + a commentary and it is limited!

Any idea on the length of the extras anyone? The R1 better be bloody fully uncut, anyone know?

We all know how funny the MPAA get about nudity (even if it's minor). I can just see this being cut at the R rating.
