Hung, you should really watch the series and End of Evangelion.

I'll wait for a subbed BD release of Eva 1.0.

I've been thinking about it, but I think I'll watch the films instead. There seems to be so little difference between the two that I don't know if there's any point in watching both. Or?

Kare kano I should get, though. Is there's a sub script for the KR dvds floating somewhere?

I think Lourdes might have them, IIRC Jeroen on AsianDVDGuide did. Dunno if you still keep in touch with him though.

ok, good to know.

I'm over my dvd budget this month, and next month there will be a Toei Chiba batch, so I don't know when I can afford it. But it's on my shopping list, definitely.

The preview for Eva 2.0 seems to indicate the this theatrical reimagining of the series is will branch off and be quite different.

Anno maybe the overall project director, but he isn't directing any of the films. I don't see why you'd want rob yourself of seeing the original vision of one of the industry's true auteurs. Eva was made from and shaped specifically by the circumstances of his life at the time. As you watch the series you feel where he has his breakdown. It just isn't the same.

Also the film, End of Evangelion, is an experience that cannot be missed.

What was the running time of 1.0? The R2J dvd, which is 1.01, seems like a different cut. It runs 98:12 (company logos and 2.0 preview included).

Eva (or someone else), could you explain to me about the differences between the TV show and 1.0. How much was actually changed?

Does anyone know about the quality of the recent HK Patlabor discs? R2J ports or something else?

Chrono Crusade's good, but falls apart towards the end. Yet another Manga adaptation that screwed the pooch and dropped the Manga half way through, but in Chrono's case the anime writers have no excuse as the Manga was almost over when they produced the show!

She's probably the main problem with the Anime, they completely rape her character when they stop adapting the Manga and do their own thing(not literal rape! :D). They basically try and the turn the story into a much more downbeat action-drama.

Off the top of my head:-
-In one vital scene of the first episode there's some falling debris caused by the tremors of the attack. Unit 01 acts on "her" own and shields Shinji from the falling rubble. This is the first vital hint concerning the true nature of the Eva's, particularly Unit 01 and 02. It's altogether absent from the film.

-The battle with Sachiel is shown in chronological order in the film. How they presented it in the series was far more effective, but obviously wouldn't have worked in a theatrical format.
-Ep.1 has a cliffhanger as Sachiel is piledriving and seemingly defeats Unit 01. Ep.2 picks up at the aftermath of the battle. Halfway through the episode we finally get to see the how the fight played out - a particularly strong set of Unit 01's instincts kick in and "she" goes berserk.

-When the Shinji runs away, the events are quite different. In the series he didn't freely wander until he grew wary of his hissyfit (In the film he said something along the lines of "I'm ready to go back now." and then the MiB that were trailing him the whole time reveal themselves.), he's forcibly returned by NERV Intelligence against his wishes.
-A lovely scene where Shinji encounters Kensuke camping in a field, playing army has been entirely erased.

-Ramiel's design saw a dramatic overhaul in the film.
-The film doesn't explain the origins of Unit 00's "space shuttle shield" that was used during the battle with Ramiel.

-Kaoru/Kaworu isn't introduced until very late into the series.
Does anyone know about the quality of the recent HK Patlabor discs? R2J ports or something else?
The R1's are direct ports of the R2Js, if that helps any.

FUNimation have acquired the US rights to Eva 1.0, so hopefully we'll see a subbed Blu-ray release.

Also they've rescued some more Geneon titles from oblivion. Worthy of note are Samurai Champloo and Gungrave.
FUNimation's New Show A-Go-Go countdown is still winding down, but
has already
resulted in an impressive list of titles, including former Geneon properties
Ikki Tousen, Gad Guard, Vandread, Last Exile and Gankutsuou. Shows new to
North American shores are Evangelion: 1.0, Soul Eater, Slayers Revolution,
Nabari No Ou, and Oh! Edo Rocket. Also in the mix are Gungrave and Samurai
Champloo, which FUNimation will now be distributing for Geneon.

Nice one, I preferred Eva 1.0 to the part of the series it was adapting. Have FUNimation released any BDs so far, and have they been region locked?

http://www.highdefdigest.com/tags/show/FUNimation

Some DBZ films, Shinobi, Vexille, Afro Samurai and an original Robotech feature.

It seems that all but one of their releases is region A locked, I couldn't find any info on the Robotech film though (not that it matters, as Robotech franchise is an abomination.)

The reviews of their non-DBZ releases all seem good, but one of their DBZ releases was voted amongst HD Digest's worst BD releases of 2008.

FUNimation recently remastered all of their DBZ stuff, heavy DNR'ing is apparent on these film BD releases by the sounds of it. They controversially tilt and scanned the TV series. DBZ might be God awful, but it doesn't deserve such vile treatment.

Cheers, hmmm I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens with the Eva 1.0 BD then.

I'd not heard of 'tilt and scan' before, just looked it up on Wikipedia and that's rather silly, tut tut FUNimation.

Shit, forgot this thread existed lol. I finally finished Chrono Crusade yesterday (I struggled to sit through it all!), I really don't get why it's generally rated highly by anime fans. I found it boring and the animation was pretty lame, I didn't like the fog effect which permeated it, would have preferred more vivid colours tbh.

Currently watching the three Manglobe series: Ergo Proxy, Samurai Champloo, and the wonderful Michiko to Hatchin. Love them all, what a great studio.

I watched the first OVA series of Tenchi Muyo recently, was all right, wasn't too keen on the character designs.

Watched Gunbuster and some of its sequel, yet again all right. I like the style of the sequel which is noticeably by the FLCL guy.

I watched Blood: The Last Vampire and wasn't too impressed, the English dialogue was delivered in a very unconvincing way and the whole thing was just a bit bleh really, it was OK.

I've been re-watching Cowboy Bebop and Stand Alone Complex because they're so great :)

So what's everyone else been watching?

I'm re-watching Hajime No Ippo, but this time through my PS3 on my TV, instead of on the PC-monitor. I love that show.

Downloading Michiko as we speak. Don't know Ergo Proxy, but heard the name before.

Have you seen Mushishi yet!?

I have checked out the first 2 eps of Michiko, and it's cool, looks nice, but I'm not sure if I like it as much as Bebop and Champloo yet, mainly because we basically know 3 characters (the babe, the kid, and the sister of the babe who's a cop).

Have you checked out Mushishi yet!?

Ow yeah, a 2nd series of Fullmetal Alchemist has started this week, following the manga again. I really liked the first series, so I'll check this new series out as well.

Watched the first 4 episodes of Michiko, but still not sure about it. It's OK, but not as good as you hyped it up to be, you Gassy bastard! :P

Are there any other new shows from the last few years that are well worth watching!?

Ergo Proxy, Seirei no Moribito, Darker than Black, Ghost Hound, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex are all terrific.

I've started downloading Eden of the East and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, but I've yet to watch them.

Eden of the East is the latest series from Kenji Kamiyama, so of course it's on my must watch list.

Yeah I've been watching Eden of the East, it's pretty good, the background animation is impressive.
