Even so 2 out of 9 films isn't to bad when you consider the 2 in question are old releases and Premier Asia haven't cut films since (in fact Premeir Asia has never cut any films).

Screendaily.com summed up the Tom Yum Goong success :
Sahamongkolfilm International’s martial arts flick Tom Yum Goong has smashed box office records in both Thailand and Hong Kong on its opening weekend. The US$8m picture, a follow up to Ong Bak that reunites director Prachya Pinkaew and action star Tony Jaa, has grossed a massive $2.4m (THB98m) after four days of release on a record 243 screens in Bangkok alone, according to Sahamongkofilm.
It also took the second highest opening ever on $0.48m, just beating 2001’s Thai historical epic The Legend of Suriyothai which scored $0.47m on its first day. It went on to score higher on its second day with $0.77m, breaking all records for a single day release.
The picture is set to be this year’s highest grossing film. The top earner so far is Thai slapstick comedy Luang Pee Teng with $3.44m, which is also the fourth highest grossing local film in Thai history.
In Hong Kong, Tom Yum Goong, released through Edko Films, opened at the top of the box office chart with US$152,656, making it the best opening for a Thai film in the territory. The previous record was held by Iron Ladies’ $122,279. Tom Yum Goong grossed $660,599 on 42 screens over the opening weekend, slightly ahead of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which collected $625,603.
Tom Yum Goong, which garnered $15m in presales, will roll out in Korea through Showbox and Mediaplex on 18 August and in Taiwan through New Action and 20th Century Fox on 19 August. Earlier this month, the Weinstein Company announced it had picked up US and multiple territory rights to the film.

According to screendaily.com, the Weinstein Company has picked up US and multiple territory rights of Tom Yum Goong. The Weinsteins also hold rights in Scandinavia,Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. TF1 International holds remaining worldwide rights. A US release date will be set in due course.

Before panic sets in, I don't think we're in for a Miramax situation here. They're just in it for the rights exactly the same as Besson's Europacorp was for Ong Bak. Same situation, different players. Though I'm sure the Weinsteins will try and get lots of money out of it; possibly more than other licensors would.

Cool the Bangkok Post I remember reading that in BKK a few years back. It's very popular with the farang community. I wouldn't base my opinion on what a Thai says it may sound strange but the two cultures (Thai vs. UK) are very different.

it bundles together clumsy scenes of destruction. But nobody would care.

The film operates on the assumption that Jaa is not an actor but an action puppet.

Jaa's breathtaking athleticism is definitely a sight to behold, but more and more his character looks less a tranquil hero driven to use force, which I believe Jaa would be able to pull off, than a bloodthirsty streetfighter sucked out of a violent video-game.

That sounds very much like Ong-bak if you analyze it as most people don't they very much enjoyed Ong-bak.

Ong-bak while having impressive stunts completely failed as a film for me. It would've worked much better as a documentary about stunt work than a proper film. I'm expecting more of the same.

Unless the HK DVD has English subs and is cheap I doubt I#ll rush to see it.

The film, like a hot soup cooked to thrill foreign tongues, is made up of everything the average farang would imagine our glorious country to have aplenty

I'd give the nod to the French R2 but only just, they all look poor going by the captures.

According to this both the German R2 and French R2 are the international cut. Tom can you confirm the French R2 is?

Clearly the reviewer doesn't know about the 3 different cuts as he doesn't mention which cut the R1 gets but doesn't complain about a new rap score so maybe the R1 doesn't use the international cut after all, which I find hard to believe.

Yes, the R2FR is the Luc Besson cut.

Several scenes (the drug-related scenes) have been deleted, and the music score has been altered (less thai music, more rap music).
The french score really reminds me of Besson's Taxi 1 and 2.

OK this is getting weird:

-Amazon .com lists a running time of 101 minutes.
-The french dvd is 100 minutes.

Taking into account the cuts AND the PAL speed-up, that doesn't make any sense.

I'd be sooo surprised if the R1 wasn't the international/Luc Besson cut. I may check out the Premier Asia cut/DVD when it's cheap. I'm in no real rush though to own any version.

The R1 IS the Besson cut. It has to be.

The BBFC lists running times of 104 and 108 minutes.
That would mean that the R1 is the most butchered version so far.

I'm in no real rush though to own any version.

Not really, but it feels out of place.

What rappers rapping?

No rapping, just music.
The kind of soulless music with a quick rythm that you can hear in all big french blockbusters like Taxi.

I read either 101 minutes or 104 minutes on that cover.
In NTSC-land that's the shorter cut anyway.

After enlarging the picture by 1600% I say 104 minutes.

What's next, replacing the Enter the Dragon-score with Carl Johnson's Éverybody was Kung Fu Fighting', naming all the styles they use 'Tae Bo' ('You killed my sister... now my raging fists of Tae Bo will crush ur nuts!'. and let 50 ct do Bruce's voice-over... I didnt say that

I said both the PA and orignal suit the film and both work well, there is no clear winner realy and tried out the French one to see what the music was like, nothing wrong with that either and it doesnt stand out too much.

People speaking about the changes before they see and hear the soundtracks may well want to acctually try the dvds before complaining.
There is in my opinion no reason why they should have changed the Thai music I guess, as its fine, I was expecting it to be shit. Strange.
