Favourite dvd extras

Post by HungFist »

Usually, I only get exited about extras if I'm a big fan of the film or one of the stars / director. What are some of the extras you found special? And vote please. Do you watch extras?

Some I can think of:

1. Bae Doona, Aki Maeda, Yu Kashii & Sekine Shiori Shibuya-ax live gig (Linda Linda Linda R2J)

Image Image

2. Love & Pop teasers and promo clips (they actually extend the film’s story... in the film the beach scene is only referred in dialogue) (Love & Pop and Shikijitsu R2J’s)

Mine has to be an extra on the Se7en 2-disc, where a guy demonstrates how the colours were changed and stuff, there's something about it which is dead calming to me lol, must be the guy's voice

My favourite is the American Nightmare documentary on the second disc of Anchor Bay's The Hills Have Eyes. It's remarkably effective!

Runner up goes to the many frank and entertaining commenaties and documentaries on the classic Doctor Who DVDs

I just like good-quality, well-made documentaries, which would be worth buying and watching in their own right.
Bullitt SE for instance has 2 interesting documentaries, 1 about McQueen's career, and one about movie-editing.

I also like making-offs, when it's about martial arts movies. The most enjoyable for me is the Ong-Bak making off, which TBH is more impressive and fun than the actual movie.

Also, I like trailers, especially trailers of good movies, or just great quality trailers. Most of the trailers are pretty mediocre, but some are great, and TBH I feel they should always be included on a home-release.

I usually don't care much about the PR-marketing drible some movies put on there, like the Tom Cruise movies where everyone just tells about how fun and exciting the movie was to make, how everyone was great, that everything was amazing, blahblahblah. Those really insanely 'positive' 25 minutes informericals ... :?
I only enjoy those when I actually like the people talking, like Chris Rock, Jim Carrey, whatever. Just people that are ok with not playing along with the BS you're supposed to spit on these kinda deals.

On the Pixar DVDs, I always love the extra short animations. Just watched Rattatouile for the first time yesterday. Awesome flick, but the shorts were cool as well :)
And with Wall-E, comes Presto, which is one of the funniest shorts I've ever seen. Just brilliant. A great throwback to the old Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck days, and I really wish Pixar would just start up a sub-section to make more of these kinds of shorts.

I dont care much for 'stills', or 'posters', or just pages with info you can scroll through and read. By all means, put HD images on the DVD/BR, cause they can always come in use when you want to make a cool background, or write a review, or whatever... but when I'm watching a DVD on a TV, I couldnt care less about that kinda stuff, unless it's an animated movies, so they're WIP/concept art stuff (and then, they need to include a proper 'browser' on that section of the disk.

Commentaries can be very informative and/or entertaining, but for alot of movie I dont really bother with them.

Meaty documentaries for me or on occasion commentaries.

Your poll is weird, how am I supposed to vote? The answers don't fit the question.

Means "do you like extras?" or "do you watch extras?", or, really, whatever you want...

The answers are a perfect fit

If you meant that, you should've said that ;).

Your question is asking people what are their favourite types of extras, hence why Yi and myself have answered with examples and not a Yes I do, no I don't.

The poll is about whether you like extras or not. This topic is about discussing what are your favourite extras. Two questions there.

Usually I never watch extras, especiall not Making-Ofs, because I don't like to be robbed of an especially convincing illusion. But I do confess to watching the Making-Of on the "Yo-Yo Girl Cop"-DVD (twice), even though I didn't exactly gain any meaningful insight through it. For a comprehensible reason check the allotment on the above poll.

But in certain cases I'm able to actually appreciate more general background intel on movie-making; information that's not specifically tied to a certain film, e.g. currently I'm very much looking forward to that "Sadistic & Masochistic"-Documentation on my still-to-be-shipped "Wife to be sacrificed"-DVD.

I wonder what... uhm, no... who is the reason for that

That reminded me of the great Saishu heiki kanojo docs where Aki steals someone's glasses. And of course Azumi R2J (Aya hosting kids’ shows, Jo Odagiri smoking on the set... while dressed as his character... that was a hilarious sight) extras.

Haha, yet another DVD-Extra I've watched even though I didn't understand a word. I loved that part where Aya accidentally got hit by a sword and started to cry, poor girl, with Kitamura-san standing alongside, looking all bleak, depressed and helpless like it was all his fault. :D

//EDIT:
Gosh, that sounds cruel. Actually I felt kinda sorry for her and wanted to hug her. Still love that scene, though.
I hope that makes sense . . .

(Attention Please R2J Box Set extras)

Back to Azumi; you need to get the UK dvd because it has those two documentaries with subs. The US release may also have em, I'm not sure. But of course do keep the R2J Deluxe for additional extras, better picture, sound, subs and correct version of the film.
