Akira coming to Blu-ray:

Bandai Visual has announced that Akira will be released in Japan and America on Blu-Ray in February next year with a price of US$49.98 in the US.

The Blu-Ray edition of Akira was originally planned for release in Japan back in July, but was held back to help improve the quality of the release.

Here is the tech information about the release should you want to know everything about this release:
The finalized disc will have 124 minutes on one side in two layers. The video will be in MPEG-4 AVC format with 16:9 aspect ratio and 1080p resolution. The Japanese soundtrack will be in both Dolby TrueHD 5.1-channel sound (24 bit/192 kHz) and linear PCM Dolby Surround. The English soundtrack will be in 5.1-channel sound. Both Japanese and English subtitles will be included, as well a special booklet, the teaser and standard trailers, and a video storyboard collection.

No word on a UK release, but with the London Expo in under a months time with might very well hear something soon.

My House of Flying Daggers UK BD arrived today. The Audio and Video quality is excellent, unlike the USA BD which looks like a DVD in places.

The review at Amazon is wrong, the commentary is present and correct. I can also confirm it's the same UK cut as present on the DVD (Horse falls cut), as expected.

Yeah, it's a legal requirement so unless the filmmakers can prove the horses were unharmed the cut status isn't gonna change.

Admittedly I've not checked the whole film but mine looks excellent. I watched about 30 minutes of it over various scenes and every one looked like glorious HD.

I'm interested to see what cut of HOFD we get here in Australia - hopefully we get the French version, which is fully uncut apparently? I have the US BD and it is definitely a very average video transfer - the Audio is pretty sweet though.

As for the telecine wobble in the review comments on DVD Active, it's definitely visible on both the original HK DVD and the HK SE DVD (I have both - I was hoping the HK SE DVD would've fixed the problem, but no). Pretty much if you look at the picture carefully, you can see the image wobbling back and forth. If you're a fair distance away from the picture it's not as noticeable, but it's definitely there.

Also, I'm hanging out for the Fearless BD - all 3 cuts on the disc apparently, kickass... the Director's Cut is far far superior to the Theatrical imho...

Tom seems to think the French BD is the USA cut. Surely it will be uncut, like the Aussie DVD.

Fearless is being reissued on BD in the usa with all 3 cuts on the disc.lucky i heard about it,was just about to buy the new HK Release.

Of the three cuts I'm guessing:

1. USA Cut - Known as the Theatrical Cut in America
2. International Cut - Known as the Theatrical Cut everywhere else in The West
3. Director's Cut

Not HK or Thai Cut. The HK BD looks good but I USA one looks better. Will it have any extras?

Wouldn't they create their own? As far as I know each BD has been different so far. The USA one is MPEG2 for instance. Given that the UK one is cut due to a British law I'd be surprised if the Aussie one is cut.

Crikey the French BD has English subs. Odd it has an English dub, the UK BD just has Mandarin.

I'm happy with my UK BD. It has the best English subtitled extras of all the BDs for one. The UK cut doesn't really bother me and it has decent (for me) image quality.

I don't think any of the Australian publishers/distributors create their own BDs - nearly all of the time they are exact same copies of the Region A or Region B releases (we even get movies with US ratings advice on them). Occasionally I've seen Australian warnings/logos at the start of movies, but that's pretty much it.

I'd actually be happy with the UK BD from what I've heard too... in fact, I don't mind the US cut, but I'll definitely be trying offload it soon with the pending local release.

Village Roadshow have released a handful of BDs which have been identical to the other region BDs as well (except for their own custom Warning screens)..

Back on topic though - I wonder whether the HK Fearless BD will be better/worse/same as the localized versions (US/UK/AUS).
