Beijing Olympics 2008

Post by Markgway »

A bit late to start this thread... I know... :P

But I just thought it was worth saying how well I thought China did with spectacular opening and closing ceremonies. The ladies in red were lovely - I hope Grim was watching! ;) Anyone else spot Jackie Chan, Andy Lau and Emil Chau singing near the end? I enjoyed the competition and actually wish it was running another couple of weeks. Ages until the next one.

Britain got a record haul of Golds, and that's hopefully something we can improve upon even further in 2012. We beat the Aussies which, of course, is the most important thing. 8)

The only sour note for me was the abysmal 10-min handover presentation from Britain, which looked shockingly amateurish. I didn't expect it to rival China, but nor did I expect it to be that dismal, and, bizarrely, Un-British. Looked like a bunch of demented homeless circa 1983 with ants in their pants accompanied by a naff Leona Lewis-Jimmy Page rock number. Yikes.

I had to laugh when the little Asian girl came off the bus - you'd be forgiven for thinking that Asians were the racial majority in the UK as that's the "multi-cultural" image we like to present. How many whites represented China I wonder? Er... If that's a taster I dread to think how bad our actual games will be. I sincerely hope I'm proven wrong.

Right after was a welcome to 2012 concert yet again proving all Britain knows is third rate popstars and C-list celebrities. The Chinese celebrated their culture and history - do we even have one anymore? I feel embarrassed frankly because whenever we do anything on a grand scale it's a fuck-up. Once a great country, Britain is now like the champion of losers. We need to radically change our image (and lack therof) and clean up London (to start with) if the 2012 games are to have any chance. The budget is less than half what the Chinese spent so expect cheap and not-so cheerful.

I thought the 8 minute hand over was decent myself. It was only a hand over, the bus looked impressive. I did wonder why they picked Leona Lewis though, nothing against her per say but surely they could've picked someone bigger? We have loads of massive international artists to pick from.

Unlike China we don't have anything to prove. The Chinese had something massive to prove to the world (especially in their eyes). They did a fantastic job of covering up their awful human rights record, the fact behind all the pomp is a communist party. Sure they pulled off a great Olympics but still choice to cover up their human rights record, didn't even deliver on their promise of free jounalism and free Internet.

I for one am very split in the middle over the fact China will be the worlds next Empire. I cannot see it changing it's Communist thinking any time soon.

I think you're being hugely unfair on Britain. What did you expect? This isn't the 2012 Olympics, it's just a hand over party. I cannot even remember any previous hand over party, we did better than most.

I do think you're going along with the usual "it's easier just to dis. Britain" thinking. It's a pity really and frankly gets boring. Sure The Dome was a disaster but we've easily got lots to celebrate Britain for. I'd also disagree we always make a disaster of it. The Diana and Live 8 concerts were a success, to name two.

You reckon London is dirty? It's nothing compared to many other cities, including Beijing.
The budget is less than half what the Chinese spent so expect cheap and not-so cheerful.
The Chinese spent far more than any other nation has previously, again an unfair statement. The last time I checked it wasn't a competition, we've don't need to prove anything to the world.
Markgway wrote:Anyone else spot Jackie Chan, Andy Lau and Emil Chau singing near the end? I enjoyed the competition and actually wish it was running another couple of weeks.
I spotted Jackie and Andy but not Emil.

The competition was pretty good. I didn't watch most of it, all sport is mostly boring. I'm glad it's over, TV can get back to normal now, until the next sport event that is .

It's a shame Russia just pipped us to third place, oh well. I didn't watch much of it but I was pleased for Christine Erogu (sp?), she looked well chuffed and a nice lady to boot.

I do hope more of British culture and history is shown during the 2012 opening ceremony, our history can easily take on China's history. Sure Chinese history is older but we have lots to celebrate too, much more than America for instance.

Well at least it pleased someone, because I thought it stank.
It was only a hand over, the bus looked impressive.
It was a big red bus... WOW! Mind you it was about the only recognisibly British thing during the episode so I suppose I shouldn't carp?
I did wonder why they picked Leona Lewis though, nothing against her per say but surely they could've picked someone bigger?
Because she's flavour of the month and the Brits do love a popstar.
Unlike China we don't have anything to prove.
How about national pride? I know those are dirty words in today's Britain, but still...
They did a fantastic job of covering up their awful human rights record, the fact behind all the pomp is a communist party. Sure they pulled off a great Olympics but still choice to cover up their human rights record, didn't even deliver on their promise of free jounalism and free Internet.
No one has forgotten that, but I don't think praising what the Chinese have achieved means one has joined "The Party" faithful. The fight for human rights will continue.
I for one am very split in the middle over the fact China will be the worlds next Empire. I cannot see it changing it's Communist thinking any time soon.
It won't. But if compromise can slowly be reached that's something to look forward to.
I think you're being hugely unfair on Britain. What did you expect? This isn't the 2012 Olympics, it's just a hand over party.
Like I said I didn't expect anything spectacular... I just didn't expect it to be naff either. Boris Johnson was the least embarrassing thing Britain had to offer!
I do think you're going along with the usual "it's easier just to dis. Britain" thinking. It's a pity really and frankly gets boring.
No, what's boring is people accepting any old crap that gets thrown at them. We had 8 mins to showcase the best of Britain and we failed miserably. I get nothing out of slagging off Britain. It's my country too. I don't say things because they're fashionable. I can be accused of many things but not that.
Sure The Dome was a disaster but we've easily got lots to celebrate Britain for.
Like what? Name one thing good Britain has contributed to the world in the last 30 years - excluding binge-drinking and random knivings. Britain has an incredible history but not one iota of it was visible during the handover.
The Diana and Live 8 concerts were a success, to name two.
More fucking concerts. What would Britain do if popstars were banned? It's like it's all we have to offer the world.
You reckon London is dirty?
And unsafe. They'll finally need to do some proper Policing.
I spotted Jackie and Andy but not Emil.
Emil was on Jackie's right (our left).
I didn't watch most of it, all sport is mostly boring. I'm glad it's over, TV can get back to normal now, until the next sport event that is .
That's a huge generalisation... mind you I think most "normal" TV is shit so maybe I'm just as bad. I can't see anything to look forward to getting back to. More X-Factor?

It was more than your average red bus, wasn't it ;).
Markgway wrote:How about national pride? I know those are dirty words in today's Britain, but still...
I don't reckon they actually are. Yes not to the same extent other countries take pride in their country but it's definitely there.
Markgway wrote:It won't. But if compromise can slowly be reached that's something to look forward to.
Fair point.
Markgway wrote:Like I said I didn't expect anything spectacular... I just didn't expect it to be naff either.
I didn't think it was naff personally. I thought that bloke running in mid-air with the torch at the start of the Olympics was naff though.
Markgway wrote:It's my country too.
I wonder sometimes ;). Given a choice I think you'd prefer to sink the rest of the UK into the Ocean :D.
Markgway wrote:Like what? Name one thing good Britain has contributed to the world in the last 30 years
The Beatles.

I'd rather have a government that made an effort on the world stage and didn't always get it right than one that did naff all (cue most European nations) to contribute.
Markgway wrote:More fucking concerts. What would Britain do if popstars were banned? It's like it's all we have to offer the world.
Our theatre is loved the world over and tours countries all over the place. Millions of people visit The UK each year to soak up our history.

I do take your point though, most (not all) of our culture is pre-1950s but then that's the way of the world. More and more of the world is modelling itself after the "American image" of what's important, China in particular.
Markgway wrote:That's a huge generalisation... mind you I think most "normal" TV is shit so maybe I'm just as bad.
Oh definitely it is but for me sport is 99.9% of the time dull as dishwater. I'm sure my many hours as a kid being forced to do it scared me for live, no seriously.

I'd rather have X-Factor than The World Cup any day, even if it's a very hard choice on which is more shit.

Sport is just a valid form of entertainment as much as music, film and theatre is. The difference being most people choice to give it a completely skewed perspective, considering it somehow more important, when frankly it's just entertainment. No more, no less.

I loved the opening ceremony: very well done. Too bad about the little girl who actually sang the song who didnt get to perform live, but was replaced by a play-back cuty who apparently looked 'nicer' than the actual singer.

The ending ceremony was OK, but certainly not as impressive as the opening. The british segment was crap TBH. Worthless. Horrible. Ugly.
'It's a Bus! Ow it transforms! It's a transformer!!! Cool!!! ow no... wait... no it's not... '

It was nice seeing Beckham there only days after nearly killing himself and his wife in a carcrash. Jackie and Andy were there. Cool. Nothing unexpected though. TBH I was hoping to see Zhang Ziyi and/or Jet Li. Maybe even see Jet Li perform some cool wushu or something, but no...

Anyway, the opening was great (apart from the 2 hour entrance of all the athletes, which is always a bore. "You're fucking ATHLETES! RUN BASTARDS!"
They should make that entrance the first olympic event of the games. That should speed things up.

The olympics themselfs were OK I guess. I dont REALLY care for all those sports. You kinda get to know some athletes and you like them and hope they do well, and when they do it's great, and when they dont I cant be bothered to care really.

I like gymnastics to watch, cause I admire the agility and the flexibility and the skill etc. But sadly I havent seen much of the gymnastics this year. Limber scantilly-clothed asians, what more can you ask for!?

I watched the football tournament, or TBH I just watched the Holland team. They were absolutely CRAP, and I already predicted they would be when I found out the line-up. Aissati wasnt there. PSV's new forward Amrabat wasnt there. We had a bunch of slow uninspired zombies on our midfield instead, and a bunch of old strikers and Babel and Drenthe who never reached their potential.

Still cant believe Aissati wasnt selected.

We had a couple of dutch successes. I'm not really nationalistic (I would sell out my country for a bar of chocolate), but it was nice seeing a guy who had cancer win the gold. There were some other small successes, and a couple of huge fuck-ups. Didnt care much tbh.

I dont know. I just didnt follow the olympics much this year.

I thought the handover bit was all right myself :) Getting Leona to perform with legend Jimmy Page showed a mix of generations (youth and more established talent). I'm not a massive Leona fan but Whole Lotta Love is a rock classic :D Leona sang well but the sound was poor. But, I do think "X Factor" when I think of Leona.
Mark, I spotted Jackie and Zhang Yimou but not Emil :)
I agree China's ceremonies were amazing and spectacular, I mean the sheer dedication! and I thought "How can we possibly match this?" - but we didn't try to do that. Our handover was just an invitation to the world, not indicative per se of what the ceremony will be like IMHO. I mean in 2004 the Beijing handover was a bit naff, they just had a dragon on stage IIRC. Zhang Yimou said that foreigners/non Chinese arent pushed as hard as they are (I think he was referring to how hard people worked on the ceremony).
Did the audience know who Leona was? I liked the part when the bus turned into the London skyline, and Becks got a big cheer ;)
47 medals is incredible so well done to all our atheletes 8) :D Theyve done so well :) I love the way the rowing commentators go OTT :D ("Scream and shout at the TV!!!!")
Congratulations to everyone but the cycling team, rowers and Christine Ohorogu stick out in my mind :D
Usain Bolt is an amazing runner, at the end of his races he was jogging FFS :D
I agree with Yi, its a shame the little girl who sang at the start didnt actually appear.

Mark as for the little girl on the bus, you think it was a conspiracy? She won a competition to appear. Get over it 8) If Blue Peter had said, "No black people enter we only want white people" how dangerous and sinister would that have been? I dont see how the colour of her skin is even relevant. She was still British.
I did feel a pang of sadness when it finished (the whole Olympics).

Did you really expect Li of all people?
-Gold on 4x100m swim
-Gold on speedcycling
-Gold on outdoor long distance swimming
-Gold for the waterpolo team (women)
-Gold for Hockey

Plus some other stuff and crap. Medal-wise Holland did OK but not as good as they could/should have done.

Do you know what "a couple" means? Or maybe you cannot count :D.

We've also not mentioned that the people chosen to perform were from a mixture of cultures and backgrounds. That's something that China cannot convey and something London should be proud of.
Leona sang well but the sound was poor. But, I do think "X Factor" when I think of Leona.
The sound was awful, she was completely drowned out. I think Leona has become successful enough to rise above her poor start, oddly it seems Americans don't give their American Idol stars a hard time, like we do.
I mean the sheer dedication! I mean in 2004 the Beijing handover was a bit naff, they just had a dragon on stage IIRC.
It would be hard for us to have that level of dedication, contrary to what Mark may think Labour aren't a communist party.

Well said, the 2004 hand over was really naff.
I had to laugh when the little Asian girl came off the bus - you'd be forgiven for thinking that Asians were the racial majority in the UK as that's the "multi-cultural" image we like to present.
WOW that's a racist statement. What utter bollocks. Most people are intelligent enough to know London is a multi-cultural city and as Grim points out, we won a competition, vote for by, shock horror "the people".
How many whites represented China I wonder?
None but then China (like Japan) is much more a homogeneous nation than we are. They don't have the mix of cultures, we do (and are poorer for it).

The question should be, how many people from China's ethnic minorities were present (such as Tibet and Kashcar) - NONE! And that's shocking, unsurprising but shocking.
grim_tales wrote:She was still British.
To most people in the country (who're borderline racist) she cannot be British as she's not White and possibly doesn't have a British accent.

I hope most people in this country AREN'T racist :( As you say Brad, London is a multi cultural city, it was a special day for that girl.
Anyway, we should be very proud of how well the GB team did 8) They were excellent.
Becks kicking a ball - well, football is our national sport, a truly global sport at that, and he is very recognised round the world :)
Its ages til the next one and I'm kind of sad its over :( Its funny that in the Olympics I watch sports I wouldnt normally watch.
I agree with Mark that the 2012 concert (afterwards) was rubbish. We dont send legends like Macca, Bowie, Jagger but third rate crap like McFly and James Morrisson. :(

There are different levels of racism. Most Brits in my opinion are borderline racist, to the point they don't believe they are.

Whenever someone gets really OTT that they cannot understand a South Asian on a call desk, that's racism. Sure it's technically annoying but I personally just listen more carefully and ask them to repeat it. Still I have travelled so am more used than most to different Non-Western accents.

Whenever someone condemning Eastern Europeans (at least a dozen nations) because they're a bit miffed too many of them moved here, that's racism. It's not their fault they're allowed to move here. If we were in their position, we'd do exactly the same thing.

It's sick really. I have to put up with it at work all the time, it gets so boring.
grim_tales wrote:Anyway, we should be very proud of how well the GB team did 8) They were excellent.
I wonder why it wasn't Team UK. Aren't there any Northern Irish athletes?

Hopefully after today, things can get back to normal. I hope they don't milk the 2012 Olympics for a few weeks.

I really enjoyed the competition too. I heard that most of our atheletes work full time as well so have to train in their spare time. That's dedication for you :)
Don't worry we wont hear about it for a while. It will all be ready in 2013 :8)

Lol... and we know how trustworthy Blue Peter elections are don't we? It's well known that there's a concentrated effort at the BBC to get as many Asians on TV as possible despite the fact that they represent about 5% of the general population. Next time you see a report on the BBC News set in a school watch how many of the kids sitting at the front are ethnic minorities. Someone pointed this out to me and it's true. You would think that whites made up about 40% of the populace. The liberal left is so desperate to convince us all that we're multi-cultural that they're faking the so-called evidence and people like Brad suck it all in.
bradavon wrote:WOW that's a racist statement. What utter bollocks. Most people are intelligent enough to know London is a multi-cultural city and as Grim points out, we won a competition, vote for by, shock horror "the people".
Brad calling someone a racist again? Shock! Horror! You haven't done that for like a whole week or something. Brad you're an arsehole. Fact.
None but then China (like Japan) is much more a homogeneous nation than we are. They don't have the mix of cultures, we do (and are poorer for it).
Poorer... how?

Yeah, it's much better that British jobs get factored out to India. Hooray for India, I say!
Still I have travelled so am more used than most to different Non-Western accents.
Wow. Thrown a little condescension into the mix. Keep going.

And? You have a real issue with percentages.

Many schools have an ethnic majority, your point?
Markgway wrote:The liberal left is so desperate to convince us all that we're multi-cultural that they're faking the so-called evidence and people like Brad suck it all in.
I'm not sucking anything in. I can well believe South Asians (I presume you're not referring to the entire Asian continents?) only makes up 5%. The difference being I don't care.

So what? I don't understand what the big deal is. You may not like it but massive parts of the country are multi-cultural. They may not get along but multi-cultural they are. You can deny it all you like but it's a fact.
Markgway wrote:Brad calling someone a racist again? Shock! Horror! You haven't done that for like a whole week or something. Brad you're an arsehole. Fact.
Resorting to bad language because you like others hate the idea you're a little bit racist, how intelligent.
Markgway wrote:Poorer... how?
Obviously you won't get this as you wish everyone in the UK was White and prescribe to the Ekon Powell way of thinking but multi-culture for all it's problems does more good than harm.
Markgway wrote:Yeah, it's much better that British jobs get factored out to India. Hooray for India, I say!
British jobs, yada yada yada, blah, blah, blah. It's a reality, deal with it. You reckon truthfully if it didn't happen those who're apparently put out would do those jobs? Please.

Sure some would but so many jobs done by ethnic minorities are done by them because "your kind" (as you like to put it) won't do them.
Markgway wrote:Wow. Thrown a little condescension into the mix. Keep going.
Condescending it was but it's the truth. You travel more, you start to respect other cultures more.
Markgway wrote:Won't someone save Brad? He needs help!
Again I'm not the one with a chip on my shoulder. I really have no problem being served by an Eastern European or South Asian in a cafe, restaurant or call centre. Many certainly do.

p.s - I see you've changed your signature, keep up the good work :D.

Yes. It's only me. Never mind that the majority of British people feel the same.
You never said "introduced" ;).
Wouldn't make a difference since The Beatles stopped making records in 1970.
In an 8 minute preview, you expect so much in 8 minutes.
Yes. And I believe other countries would have delivered. I think anything Britain touches is half-hearted and half-baked.
It's a very popular kids show. Blue Peter is a very British show, it makes sense it would get to pick.
Christ. I know what Blue Peter is. I'm saying that I don't necessarily trust the votes. Who knows which kid was voted for? Maybe it was this girl? Maybe it wasn't? All I know is that it's well known that the BBC have an agenda - and that's not me saying that.
Utter bollocks. You're just pissed off they didn't pick a Scottish Whitey.
It's well-known about the BBC; and I couldn't care less what the kid's colour was... it's the politics behind it that bothers me. There's just over 1.5 Million Indians living in the UK (out of roughly 60 million) and yet an Indian girl was chosen to represent this country? I'm sure she's as British as fish 'n' chips, but it's political point scoring. "Look at us... aren't we multi-cultural and fab? See even our representative is non-white. We're soooo progressive". You can imagine the meetings. YOU seem to have a bit of a racist thing about Scotland going on in your tiny little head... but that's OK?
Many schools have an ethnic majority, your point?
It doesn't matter where the school is. If there are ethnic students they will be "represented" in front. Don't believe me? Keep watching.
I'm not sucking anything in. I can well believe South Asians (I presume you're not referring to the entire Asian continents?) only makes up 5%. The difference being I don't care.
Actually it's more like 2.5% and they're all welcome in the UK as far as I'm concerned. I'm not racist at all. I just don't like the distortion of the truth and the liberal attempt to forcibly change Britain's culture - usually by erasing its own. What is modern British culutre? Damned if I know? But you could answer that question easily in decades gone by. Had that Olympic handover been in 1964 it would've been VERY British. The centre of the games is London but this is a British games. London isn't much like the rest of the UK. Think about it? Who were the popstars asked to represent the nation? A reality TV show winner and a wizzened old junkie. At least Beckham I can't say anything bad about - except his taste in women. Did you see the video intro? Graffitti and punks - I shit you not. And at the gala event in Beijing - a video presentation that breifly included a portrait of Myra Hyndley - child murderer. To promote Britain. No, really. Even Boris Johnson though that was fucked up.
You may not like it but massive parts of the country are multi-cultural. They may not get along but multi-cultural they are. You can deny it all you like but it's a fact.
Did anyone ask you if you wanted to live in a multi-cultural society? I know you do - but were you asked? I wasn't. The elite decided for us. British culture has been eroded, half replaced by imported cultures and half left in a vacuum. Britian is not America - a TRUE multi-cultral nation. But the powers that be are so desperate to turn Britain into the US it's unreal. Say what you like about the French, but they're French.
Resorting to bad language because you like others hate the idea you're a little bit racist, how intelligent.
Come on, Brad, don't start talking about intelligence. You're scaring me. You've insulted posters with four-letter outbursts yourself so don't play Pollyanna, please. And if someone calls me a racist - a bullshit accusation but one we've come to expect from your tiny, ignorant little brain - I bite back. So yeah, fuck you.
Obviously you won't get this as you wish everyone in the UK was White and prescribe to the Ekon Powell way of thinking but multi-culture for all it's problems does more good than harm.
When did I ever say I wished everyone in the UK was white? Was that before or after I said I wished everyone in the UK was Scottish? Like most liberals you make shit up to suit your argument. Damn the truth if you can score a point from lying. It's your stock in trade. I've lost count of the number of times you've called someone (usually me) a racist. It's handy because it means you don't have to debate. That's what the left does. It's why Britian never debates issues like asylum seekers. You raise the issue and BANG you're a racist. Case closed. It's very clever and effective but also nasty and insidious.
British jobs, yada yada yada, blah, blah, blah. It's a reality, deal with it. You reckon truthfully if it didn't happen those who're apparently put out would do those jobs? Please.
Lots of young people in the UK rely on call centre jobs for income. But you wouldn't care about that.
Sure some would but so many jobs done by ethnic minorities are done by them because "your kind" (as you like to put it) won't do them.
My kind? WTF are you on? I'd laugh at your indignation if it weren't so blindly offensive to anyone who daren't subscribe to your view. When have I ever said I'm against ethnic minorties or imported workers? The obvious problem of relocating call centres to India is that more often that not there is a major communication problem. I've experienced it, and so have lots of people I know. Are they all racists? Probably in your eyes, yes. Why should we have to strain to understand, when these jobs could be done in the UK? And done by a British-Indian. No problem. As usual you twist everything to make me sound racist. It's what you do and it's one reason you're so disliked around here. But you have no clue of that do you?
Again I'm not the one with a chip on my shoulder.
You're joking! You constantly refer to the fact that I'm Scottish in some vein attempt to use it against me.
I really have no problem being served by an Eastern European or South Asian in a cafe, restaurant or call centre. Many certainly do.
Apart from the call centre thing IN INDIA(!) none of those bother me. I get along with people from all backgrounds and respct anyone who wants to come here and work for a better life. But unlike you I don't see the situation as black and white. I don't for instance think that in order for minorties to be able to fit in traditional British culture should be eroded - let's fucking ban Christmas! was one of my all-time faves - but rather they should be encouraged to intigrate. I welcome any person who wants to be British and not just a foriegner who lives here but can't stand how we live. In America EVERYONE is American. They may be multi-cultural but they have a strong grasp on national pride and identity. Britain doesn't. Britain is ashamed of its past and it's because of people like you. Liberal white guilt? Probably.

Correct me if i'm wrong fellas, as I didn't watch the closing ceremony, but wasn't our segment supposed to be celebrating the setting of the next Olympics - ie: London? In which case, surely any exhibition of multiculturism is far more relevant?

Christine Ohorogu? the runner who deliberately missed 3 dope testing appointments and was banned from the games only to win an appeal to compete while Dwain Chambers admitted his crime, served the time and was still banned :| yeah Grim let's celebrate Christine's achievement, maybe we can make her a dame like Kelly Holmes

Whoa Sam, I'm not suggesting making Christine a dame. Athletes have to tell the authorities where they will be for a month (which Christine did). However, she had to change her venue at the last minute, due to a rugby match being held in the same place. When she wasnt there, its classed as a "missed" test. 5 minutes late means a miss.
When the authorities caught up with her, she passed all her tests. She appealed against a ban from the Olympics and won. Missing 3 unannounced tests doesnt mean she doped. The testers can turn up on your doorstep. You are allowed to miss 2 tests only in an 18 month period.
Dwain Chambers admitted he doped, not just that he missed a test.
No one in athletics thinks Ohorogu is a drugs cheat. The reason UK Sport failed giving her a life ban (she won her appeal) was because its only in the UK the rules are so strict.
Rant over.
