Q&A Thread.

Post by gasteropod »

How come one cup of tea makes me need about three full purges of the bladder within an evening? I've had a look on the net to see if tea is a diuretic, but apparently not!

If anyone could enlighten me on the matter, I would be most grateful!

It's the caffeine I think, here's some blurb from wikianswers:
Tea is just water filtered through dried leaves that causes a molecular bond, where the tea molecule attaches to the water molecule(H20). With the added stimulant drug known as caffiene, it over initiates contractions in the bladder. The nervous system activates tiny bits of adreneline. Thus, caffiene being considered a pick me up(speed) it also speeds up the bladder. Not to be too detailed or anything.

Ahh OK, because I knew that caffeine was a diuretic but apparently the amount in tea doesn't have any such effect. So it's the stimulant part that does it, then.

Yeah a cup of tea on average will have much less caffeine than coffee, but it still contains more caffeine than any other beverage or even coke. Tea also contains theophylline, which although it's in much smaller quantity than caffeine, is also a member of the Xanthine group of diuretics.

Why do they sell cigarettes at airports yet you cannot smoke on planes? :D.

I think that's because people like to buy large quantities there VAT-free.
