Once Upon A Time In China Collection (IVL Set)

Post by grim_tales »

Silly question but are these DVDs encoded as progressive/interlaced or a hybrid of both? (Ordered them recently).
I ask because for some reason my player has trouble with the Police Story Trilogy when the picture is set to either "Auto" or "Film", it sometimes jumps and shimmers very occasionally in places - twice during PS1 and once so far during PS3 (the opening sequence). C-H also mentioned it happened once during PS3 on old Bullets, Matt Stevens said this was because of the way the video was encoded (a hybrid).
So is the OUATIC set the same? I dont want to have to arse about setting my player to "Video" or something like that :(

What is your DVD player? As I can't chance the way the video is displayed one mine.

E-mail me please with your thoughts on the AV and how it compares to the HKL's.

My player is the XV-NP1SL (one of the newer JVC players from late 2003).

Does anyone know where that screen capture comparison page is comparing the HKL with IVL releases?

I'm still tempted to get the IVL box set but am unsure.

OUATIC 1:
IVL is sharper.
Subs are the same.

OUATIC 2:
IVL is sharper but HKL looks better.
IVL subs are superior to HKL subs.

OUATIC 3:
HKL picture is fucked-up.
IVL is better, no matter what.

In a perfect world, you'd get:
-OUATIC 1 IVL
-OUATIC 2 HKL
-OUATIC 3 HK Vidéo (french)

In My Humble Opinion of course. :D
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Vertically squished, just like Project A 2 and Police Story 1.
Some people don't notice it, but these people must be blind :D

For OUATIC 2, I think that the subs are pretty much the same, except that the IVL subs translate the old man's song (in the first part of the movie).

The Magnificent Butcher has a stretched image too - it's terrible, I can't believe they released it.

Personally for the HKL DVDs I only have a problem with OUATIC it's to grainy.

How does OUATIC2 look better?

Even if that were true it would look odd having a mixture. As for example the HKL's have that strange yellow tone but the IVL's don't.

Personally I prefer the IVL's for all the films but then again I don't think (bar OUATIC) they're much better. I'll need to give it some thought.
Thanks

I never noticed it on Police Story (I don't have it anymore) nor did I notice it on OUATIC3.

I do now I see comparisons but not in the real world. Having said that the IVL looks Horizontally squashed.

-> OUATIC 1 IVL is perfect.
How does OUATIC2 look better?
IMHO the HKL has warmer colors that fit very well with the tone of the film.
In comparison the IVL looks washed out.
it would look odd having a mixture
Bollocks. I have OUATIC 1 IVL, OUATIC 2 HKL and OUATIC 3 HKVidéo sitting together on my shelf and they look alright to me.
Don't we all want to own the best available versions of the movies we love ? :D

Right. You just need to figure out how much you love OUATIC 1.

Right I think I'll order it next month (I've bought enough DVDs this month). It's only the cost which has stopped me and you can send things back to CD WOW easily anyway (for £1.50 cost).

I double dipped with the likes of ITLOD4 so I could decide if I preferred the Fox over the HKL. Despite the dubtitles on the Fox I kept that one. I didn't have a problem with the ITLOD4 HKL until I saw the Fox.

I may end up keeping both. The extras are great on the HKL DVDs I wouldn't like to lose them (especially the Bey Logan commentary).

Yep. I meant from the point of view of the colours being different (i.e - not consistent).
Right. You just need to figure out how much you love OUATIC 1.
I prefer OUATIC2 (it's one of my fave Jet Li films), although I love all the OUATIC films (of the 3 I've seen).

So you're saying that the IVL subs are better because of their visual presentation?

Pfft. From my experiences, HKL subs are better than IVL's - GRAMMAR, TRANSLATION and TIMING wise - That's where it counts the most. Big fucking deal if the bitmaps are slightly squished (or other trivial crap people whine about subtitles in general eg yellow coloured fonts instead of white).

The post was referring to the actual picture, NOT the subs,

Keep up Eva  .

I ordered this yesterday. I'll post which I prefer when it arrives. I'm keeping the HKL whatever but may keep the IVL also. Iit will only cost £1.50 to send it back from CD WOW, cheaper then renting it (if I even could).

The IVL version of the first film has different English voices to the HKL one. For instance, when they are in the English restaurant, when the waiter hands them a menu each, on the HKL he has a posh English voice, and on the IVL he has an Indian voice.

Wait wait wait...

Are you talking about the english dub ?
or are you talking about the english bits in the cantonese tracks ?

I can't see any reason why the english "bits" would be different... :?

The English bits on the Cantonese soundtrack! (I was using the DTS track but I think I might have checked the others and they were the same... but I'm not sure)

I've just checked and I'm not mistaken. And guess what? Just before the waiter gives them the menus, Buck Teeth is speaking in English isn't he, introducing them. Well, on the HKL one of the Chinese guys then says in English, "How come your English is so, so so fluent" (or something to that effect) Yet on the IVL he speaks in Chinese!!! (Not Buck Teeth - the other Chinese guy)
