Face Off: Original R1US DVD vs Australian Blu-Ray
Note: the australian BD is uncut and region-free.
Blu-Ray top.
Old DVD bottom.

The title has obviously been moved and the framing is a bit different.
I'm sure the frames match, though.

I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

No idea what after processing they are doing to that Blu Ray, but its got rid of grain and created a bit of a mess to my eyes. I am stunned how similar the dvd looks to the HD version, makes a mockery of HD.
The USA HD DVD looks better than that (from memory), but has the bloody Noise Reduction on that version, so thats pointless as well as everyone looks like plastic, with white lines around them from the Edge Enhancement.
HD = dont transfer the film, first mess about digitally to make it look odd!

The USA HD-DVD is inferior to the International BDs and seeing as this is one of Paramount's re-releases I'd say it's 99% definite the USA BD will look identical to the existing USA HD-DVD. The BD was ready to go at the same time as the HD-DVD but was then pulled. The fact the spec is identical to the HD-DVD tells me they're done nothing with it since moving to BD.tom2681 wrote:We'll have to see if the US Blu-Ray can beat it.
You can see a comparison between the Disney BD and Paramount HD-DVD here:
http://www.mbmg.de/hd-discs/faceoff_bd-vs-hd/01.html
The International BDs have PCM over the Full-rate DTS on the Paramount discs but are virtually barebones, compared with all the HD extras on the Paramount discs.
I understand the Mainland European ones are uncut too.tom2681 wrote:Note: the australian BD is uncut and region-free.
The DVD looks a mess, the BD looks much better.
Thanks btw.

Blu-ray is shit alright. I don't know how they have the balls to pass this of as HD and even less how people can be buying it and say it looks good. Everyone screamed for a remaster of the Fifth Element, but this one is at least 5 times as bad. I mean just look at what a mess it is, the film no longer has a grain structure, it has a cross-hatch structure.
And the HD DVD uses exactly the same master only DNR'd to ridiculous levels so that one's no better.

You reckon the DVD looks better to the Aussie BD? If so it's yours that are crap. The BD does look better to the DVD.romerojpg wrote:Your eyes are crap then.
Didn't you know I have bionic eyes?
I'm still waiting for Sony to re-release House of Flying Daggers and Terminator myself.Kris wrote:Everyone screamed for a remaster of the Fifth Element, but this one is at least 5 times as bad.

Some interesting comments on the new USA BD:

Picture: ****/***** (knocks the crap out of the hideous HD DVD)
They've used a different codec. I believe that the DNR is in the source being used, so it's still present on the BD. I just didn't find it anywhere near the abhorant level as the HD DVD.
The extras have footage from the movie without the DNR and it looks fuggin' fabulous, darling! Shame the actual movie doesn't look the same.
