My problem with longer running series' is that I simply don't have time. The unwatched dvds pile is growing all the time, and adding a 50 episode anime on the top wouldn't help.

I understand.
Mushishi is 26 eps I believe, and Death Note 37 I think.
Ippo might be too long.

Mushishi is perfectly watchable 1 episode at a time. Seriously, watch it.

Ow yeah, a very nice action anime is Black Lagoon. I really like it.

You could also try some samurai/ninja films like Ninja Scroll and Dagger of Kamui. Fist of the North star and Urotsukidoji might be worth a watch as well.

Ninja Scoll I've seen. Found it good, although not mindblowing in any way.

How about Kare kano? KR box set seems cheap and probably a r2j port. Timed scripts available? How about the R1? If I remember correctly Jeroen said it sucks (and cut, too?)

edit: I get a feeling I've asked this before...

Korean boxset is a r2j port iirc, timed scripts should be available, I assume Lourdes can sort you out there. The R1's transfer is pretty shite, knowing your tastes the r3kr is definitely the way to go there.

BTW I'm of the same opinion about Ninja Scroll, tis massively over-rated. You should find Dagger of Kamui watchable if you like scroll. It might be worth giving Basilisk a watch as well (26-eps). Make sure you get Jin Roh and the 13-ep series Eva recommended.

I'd also strongly recommend Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal 4-ep OVA series that is among the finest samurai dramas around.

I watched the first episode of Basilisk, but didnt care for it. The art and the characters etc, they were all meh.

Umi ga Kikoeru isn't in your list of Ghibli stuff yuo've seen.

Kare Kano is fantastic but you must watch Evangelion first and then Kare Kano a while later (FLCL at some point as well). Eva compared the R1 to R3K in the reviews and comparisons forum, the R1 isn't as good but there's not much in it and with all the signs and things you'll either want the R1 or the vobsubs from it.
It's also a longer series...

If you go longer it has to be the solid staples of Eva, Bebop, GitS:SAC, Champloo etc. I find watcing series of anything much easier than films, you can go through one at a time or find yourself hooked and watch the lot in one go.

I think you have enought to be getting on with. :)

I don't know if that would work for me without Tomoyo Harada...

Kare Kano and Neon Genesis Evangelion are excellent, I didn't recommend them as I would've thought that 26 episodes might be too long for you.

Others:-
Ghost Hound
Texhnolyze (sp?)
Cowboy Bebop
Darker than Black - This is one that Lourdes and Shing might not have seen. A slow-burning series that comes to a delightful simmer and ends with a bang. One of the best of the past year, IMO.
Samurai Champloo
Ergo Proxy
FLCL
Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu

Been going through stuff I've accumulated and not seen,

Tekkonkinkreet - Try it
Like other 4°C stuff really. Nice animation, a certain crudeness to the characters and script and it has its moments but I quickly lost interest and didn't even finish watchng it. The main plot was just stupid but there was this sentimental yakuza sidestory which was unremarkable but likeable.

Vexille - If you like mindless films.....
I wasn't going to watch this but it was in HD... Not sure if it's worse than Ex Machina but they're both terrible. Just another big-budget CG-Anime P.O.S. with some sort of moral plot, "don't make cyborgs" in this instance.

Red Garden - :Gonzo:
The sins of a storage whore, you tend to accumulate all sorts of rubbish including Gonzo series, for shame. The aforementioned company dictates the quality.

Hellsing Ultimate - For teens and manga readers
This is exactly what I thought it would be after I thought it looked disappointing when doing comparisons. I once hoped it would have OVA/movie quality production and a real story. Instead it's TV quality in every sense: TV quality animation, zero research into the themes and settings depicted, far too much talking shit ("muhahaha"-ing) and too frequently that silly super-deformed style to try to be amusing. Oh and most characters have glasses and they completely overdo that anime cliché of whiting them out due to reflections - in every fucking shot.
I still want to see what happens but that doesn't make it good, and in any case it's going to be a year till Vol.5 if thei track record is anything to go by.

Freedom - Could be good
First I have to cover the character designs, they're by Katsuhiro Otomo and if you thought the characters in Akira were fugly then you're in for a shock, becuase in Freedom it's worse still. They all look the same, even the women, the only difference between characters is their hair - which is normally brown and in similar styles anyway. I must criticise the backgrounds as well, they're rather bland and lacking detail so everything feels rather sparse.
Nonetheless I have watched the first two episodes and it definitely shwos promise - and it's in HD (even if it is banded terribly). I'll watching the three more that are available posthaste.

Code Geass - If you live with your parents...
There are two reasons for my watching this A) I can get hold of some lovely loking 1080i transprot streams of the second season and B) I know a staff member and they demanded that I do so.
It's not good, I'll have to lie if I'm asked what I think - perhaps I'll compare it to Eva - it certainly tries to be like it with a lot of characters beng clones of Eva ones, the angst in this series is just reflected externally.

I watched Karas: The Prophecy again, it's just pure extravagance and really quite good. It hardly touches on the plot and its mythos, the point of focus seems purely to be grabbing your attention. You have little idea of what is going on but it doesn't matter one bit.
Unfortunately with Karas: The Revelation I have to draw a paralell, Blood: TLV and Blood+, the difference really is that severe. You're filled in on the main plot and things are explained and it's all just over the top and very pointless. It's not as dark or exciting and what happens is rather unoriginal with the usual one dimensional protagnists.
The R1 subtitles for the second part are disppointing as well, it opens with a girl speaking slang so they replace every other syllable with apostrophes and the main villian starts using thee/thy/thou for no apparent reason, and this is in bright yellow - the first part had beige subs which worked very well.

It's a shame the two go hand in hand, I must recommend the first part but the second is a chore.

Has anobody watched Ghost Hound? I have started on it (I try anything I.G.) and at episode 6 I'm just not feeling it and there are many more episodes to go - does it get better?
I'd probably describe it as Serial Experiments Mononoke/Kamichu, only with rubbish characters.

Ah well, thanks. A m8 of mine is thinking of getting the manga and wanted to know if the translation was ok. I've not heard anything on the anime forums I visit suggesting it was as botched as Naruto was when they first started publishing it, so I told him he should be alright. I also found a rather neat scanlation/VIZ comparison today that pretty much confirmed their translation is ok.

Found something with google search (d'oh ). It doesn't seem as good as the theatrical translation but should be about fine, hopefully. Now, if somebody would give me some money I'd buy the dvd...

Only now I realize there's a subbed HK release of Eva 1.0. But it's by AVP so forget it. Gotta do the right thing instead.

Eva 1.0 R4 DVD is out next week in NZ.

Strangely it's scheduled for mid-Nov in Aussie.

Really, I don't know what's going on here.

EDIT: There's a good chance that this release will have "festival subs".

I hope it comes out in the UK soon, although I'd probably prefer it on Blu-ray.
