Did this ever turn out to be any good?

Does anyone know if the UK DVD of the animated version is NTSC to PAL or Film to PAL? It's in a sale here:

https://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/forums/ ... php?t=4533

Thanks.

The live-action TV film is ok, but it's bogged down by Jdorama melodrama and a need to justify the actions of certain characters. The anime is far, far superior in everyway - it is a masterpiece.

Thanks Shingster. Did you manage to source an English subtitled version?

I thought Hung spelt drama wrong when he wrote dorama :D. I've not seen that word before. I assumed it was a cinematic film not TV film.

Any idea if the Grave to the Fireflies Anime UK DVD is NTSC to PAL or not? If no one knows I'll e-mail Optimum. I'm unkeen to buy it if it's NTSC to PAL.

"Dorama" (A phonetic spelling of how a Japanese person would pronounce the English word, drama.) is Western fan jargon for Japanese TV dramas.

The live-action film likely would've been fansubbed.

I sourced a rip with soft subs within 2 days of its broadcast in Japan, the fansubbers don't fuck about with TV specials nowadays. There is a Malay DVD with English subs available here. I couldn't tell you what the A/V is like though. I strongly suggest you watch the anime before the Live-Action drama though.

No I don't, I own the r1us and r2j DVDs myself. I would expect it to be NTSC>PAL tbh, but my advice would be to either pop into a local HMV and note the running time on the case, or as you mention email Optimum. Note that PlayUK & Amazon.co.uk list the r2uk runtime as 90mins and the r4 DVD release is listed at 90mins on some review sites, which suggests the UK will most likely be NTSC>PAL (r1us runtime is 90min, and UK distributors usually work from the same masters as Australian).

Thanks Eva for the explanation.

Thanks Shingster, for the rest of your comments too.

Sadly it is NTSC to PAL. I managed to find that out :(. Bugger the UK R2 is in a Sale right now. I'll have to pick the R1 up at some point. It does get nothing but rave reports.

Good idea.

I didn't know they always listed accurate running times if you will on covers when it comes to anime. I presumed the PAL running time could be listed despite it being NTSC to PAL. Hence I wasn't sure if it was accurate.

I never said anything about the runtimes always being accurate on the back of r2uk DVDs. Obviously that isn't the case (I'm sure I'd find at least one incorrect runtime if I bothered to check all my r2uk discs). I'm just saying that as a general rule they are usually correct.

Internet hardman eh? Get back in your box Eva.

Genuine reason? The thread died over 2 years ago! The boy has no interest in this other than +1 for his post count.

I do however aknowledge its not the best example of his mindless posting but posts containing nothing more than a smiley or bumping dead threads such and this and the members gallery?? WTF is that all about? Happening far too often.

Sorry. That was badly worded. I meant as a general rule.

I recently advised him to check out the anime and I'm willing to bet he did a forums search and found this thread on the Live-Action version, and now he's curious about that. I honestly don't think this is one of his random thread bumps. :D

 Ooops!

Anyways moving swiftly on  the live action was for me a bit boring, the anime however is beautifull.

Shingster is right on the money, although the catalyst was the Sendit Ghibli sale and trying to find out if it's NTSC to PAL. I hear "Grave of the Fireflies" is excellent. I am now trying to source the R1 for under £10.

Tiger you're well, wrong 8). Are you now going to apologise to Tom for wasting his time in PMing him about my apparant post count boosting? ;)

Please do.

I'd prefer however we all just got along and stopped the pettiness. I'm not sure that's possible right now.

Have you got a CRT or a progressive display brad? TBH you might as well just get the UK DVD if it's very cheap right now, as you could always sell it on at not much of a loss, and if you do end up loving the film you'll no doubt be upgrading to a HD disc in a year or two anyway. Also, I doubt you'll find the r1 CE for under £10 brand new.

True. The R1 may actually be OOP. I cannot find it in stock anywhere.

LCD TV, so Progressive. I find NTSC to PAL looks worse/more obvious than it did on my old CRT TV.

Yeah it does seem like Central Media have stopped pressing GOTF on r1 for some reason. Dunno if it's just temporarily or if it has gone OOP. You got Korean friends haven't you, any chance they can get the r3k 2-disc cheap? If disc01 is a r2j port then it'll have the best transfer available.
