The HD-DVD has the same colours as the director and cinematographer supervised SE, good thing and the higher resolution makes it look good whereas in SD it does look a bit murky and crap.

I will add the BD at some point, though it might not be for some months.

Is that the Japanese HD-DVD without English subs?

I don't like any of them but I suppose the HD-DVD looks the best. The UK 2 Disc SE transfer looked fine on my TV though, so I doubt the BD will bother me.

Tom, is this one of the Tartan releases? A French subbed release means nothing to the likes of us who need English subs.

Then neither does the Japanese HD-DVD Lourdes has posted. I think they should be added regardless of subs.

Yes, it's the Tartan.
I've heard people say the BD is way too bright, so it could be very similar to the HD-DVD.

Don't all DVDs use the Korean UE transfer? Except for the Korean SE and Japanese HD-DVD. It's look fine when viewed on a TV.

sorry, I was a bit inaccurate. I didn't mean that the dvds look technically bad. I meant that the new visual look is horrible beyond words.

My God, who knew that the "corrected" colours were that bad. Goes to show that there are cases where the director is right and the critics/general public are idiots.

I am surprised how poor the HD version is, I expected a stunning transfer. Its better thant he standard version, but hell.

Okay, I've got my Tartan BD.

Can't take screencaps at the moment (working on it), but I can already tell you that it has the same colour scheme as the HD-DVD and R3K-SE.
And unless my PowerDVD settings are wrong, the BD is slightly brighter than both of them.

Thanks. I wonder if Tartan sourced their Master from the Japanese company. It's interesting they've gone back to the Director Approved transfer for the HD releases.

The BD seems to have more grain than the HD-DVD.
Brightness and sharpness seem to be identical (it's PowerDVD that gives me a brighter picture, then).

It's probably just the difference in hardware and software taking the screen caps.

The only thing that annoys me about the BD, is the bizarre contrast/brightness which greatly affects the black level at various points in the film.

Why cannot you use the same method as Lourdes and Eva Tom?

The BD seems slightly sharper, check the eyes. I bet Tartan did source the master from whoever the Japanese company are.

Yes, I know none of them match (apart from N°8 ). That's as close as I can get, sorry.

They look exactly the same to me.
The minor brightness and colour tint differences are probably software-related.

When I take a screengrab, the frame that is saved by MPC is not the frame that I've selected.
The frame that's saved is within 2 seconds of the one that I've selected, but it's (almost) never the one I want.

I'm hoping someone like Lourdes will be able to provide some kind of explanation.

Note: this only happens with AVC-encoded transfers.

Thanks. I hate when that happens. When I used MPC last night to capture a subtitle example, the bloody PNG had no subtitles in it.
