Nikita (Luc Besson, 1990) - German 2 disc set

Post by grim_tales »

Is Nikita any good? ;) I'm sure it was the inspiration for the Bridget Fonda movie The Assassin, no?

Supposed to released with a "Steelbook" Packaging style in a SE on 22 November. Up for pre-order at Amazon.de now:

Will it have French DD5.1 and English subs though?

Not quite as good as Leon but it comes close. They work as a companion piece.

NO. The Assassin is a remake. Which I liked until I saw the original and now think it's utter rubbish.

I saw NIKITA when I was a kid. Didn't like it much.
Didn't like the HK remake BLACK CAT either.
Nor the US remake POINT OF NO RETURN come to think of it.
Only version that got me was the Canadian Cable series.

Do you like Leon? I suggest watching it again now you're older.

The Canadian show is good (better than the US remake) but still doesn't come close to the original.

Point of No Return? I've never heard of it :?
The Canada series is La Femme Nikita right?
OK so The Assassin is a remake of Nikita so Nikita was its inspiration, no? :D

Point of No Return is the US theatrical title... It fared so bad that they decided to rename it for international release... as The Assassin. It was vaguely entertaining, but not very good I though - and the French original is excellent. Besson has done a lot of nice masterpieces. I enjoyed the HK remake (Black Cat) more than the US - lot's of fun campiness, and the Canadian series was good aswell - though it did get a bit repetitive ...
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

The character of Léon was actually in the original script of "Nikita". Besson took the character out however and made a whole new spin-off script for him.

Oh, I like LEON. Remember I mention a while back I got the Korean release? Jean Reno is the coolest Frenchman on the planet. Sorry, Tom!

I liked that the characters could really be fleshed out over 7.5 (?)seasons. The show played mostly on intrigue, betrayal and you never quite new what was going to happen next. I think the film(s) work on an entirely different level (much more action-oriented for one) so it's not fair to compare them. I thought they assembled a very good cast for the show.

Although Besson based 'Leon' on the character Jean Reno played in 'Nikita' I don't actually think they were one and the same. Just an idea being fleshed out. Wasn't Nikita's cleaner called Victor? And wasn't he killed in it?

Yes he was called Victor and yes I'm 95% sure he was killed.

What did you think of the DC? I'd check out Nikita again then as it has a similar style and coolness to it.

There is a shot in the kitchen scene when Nikita shoots and the camera follows the bullet fly through the air, very cool.

Worth seeing. Some interesting additions. But overall I think the theatrical cut works better and that's why I'm glad I plumped for the R3. So now I have both. :)

Yeah, the action is cool. But I recall the film being rather cold and heartless. As I said it's been a while.... But I need to feel something for my anti-hero. Leon was a killer, but his love for Matilda made him very human. Nikita starts off by blowing a cop's head off whilst high on drugs... it's hard to put that aside. We know Leon kills people - probably even ones who don't deserve it - but we don't see him do anything so reprehensible. I do like some kind of morality in my movies. Call me old-fashioned if you will... I will check out Nikita again at some point to see if my opinion has changed any...

I remember seeing a couple episodes of the Canadian TV series. Dull and quite boring as I remember. Peta Wilson is damn h0t though.

Been meaning to see La Femme Nikita and Leon (my friend keeps harping on about the excellence of the latter). I thoroughly enjoyed The Fifth Element.

Are you referring to Leon the directors' cuts/International cut? If so I think that is far superior to the theatrical cut adding much more depth, making it an even more satisfying movie.

When I first saw the assassin I thought it was very good but I think very little of it now since seeing Nikita, which I think is an excellent film... Nearly as good as Leon.

I've seen quite a few episodes of La Femme Nikita and found it to be quite an entertaining series although there are many series I have not seen yet. Being a TV series it cannot afford to have the same amount of action and is also toned down for the TV audience. I was quite disappointed to miss the beginning as the sci-fi Channel UK started airring this from the beginning late last year. Hopefully they will repeat it and I will watch it right through.
