Miffy:

Hello Kitty is drawn in the same style as Miffy. Miffy was created in 1955. By 1963 Miffy looked as we know it today.

Helo Kitty:

Hello Kitty was created in 1974. So HK ripped off Miffy :D

Japan ripped it off ;)

I've actually been to Sanrio Land in 2001. It was a little indoors themepark where lots of Sanrio characters were, including hello Kitty. It's in Japan btw. It was very close to our hotel. I thought it was boring as hell so I went outside and into a Sega Arcade which was near, and walked around and looked at the old arcade machines :)

If they were in sold in the West I'd agree but adult women in Korea and Japan no doubt love it too so I don't see the harm.

Korean and Japanese women are really, really girlie. That pink Wonder Bra is odd though!

Here in the west when people reacha certain age, they feel they have to act all 'adult' and stuff like that. 'cant like cartoons anymore' 'cant hang out with friends at McDonalds anymore, but lets go to a 'real restaurant instead', 'cant wear 'childish' clothes anymore', or 'play football on a concrete little field'

In HK and Japan, people just do more what they want, like what they like, eat what they wanna eat, collect what they wanna collect, play what they wanna play, etc etc.
They're less hypocrite about being themself and liking what they like.

I like that. It's more relaxed and honest. I dont like it here in the west, where everyone wants you to grow up so very very fast.
I'm 31, but I still enjoy comicbooks and anime and collectible toys and videogames etc. Dont feel I should be ashamed of that either. I am who I am and I like what I like. :D
But when you say you enjoy playing Xbox, or reading Batman, or watching Ranma, people here will frown upon you. They dont get it.

In my case I don't want to watch cartoons any more (note note anime) or go to McDonalds (which is very popular with adults!) so it wasn't a hard one. It's not because they're kids things but I've grown (up) out of them.

I would say Asian people are as hypocritical, just over different things.
where everyone wants you to grow up so very very fast.
That isn't remotely true. Parents always worry their kids grow up too fast, it's not parents who want them to.

Society wants young people to grow up fast. They throw them in schools all day long, after which they'll have to do homework and hopefully some sports, so they're whole youth is being booked solid.

I agree asians are hypocrites when it comes to other stuff, like the Edison scandal etc.

You want kids to not go to school or do homework?

I hate it when kids are forced to do sports. I was awful at sport as a kid yet I was forced to do it anyway. I usually just stood by the side of the pitch getting colder and colder and when that didn't work I stood in the middle of the pitch as everyone ran around me, they're couldn't force me to move. I even did it in Winter when it was freezing. I despised every second of it and would rather have been allowed to do some written work.

It didn't win me any favours with the teachers but I didn't care. I was a good pupil otherwise. There is a big difference between exercise and sport. One should be compulsory the other shouldn't.

I want kids to go to school, but certainly not all day long, cause most of the stuff is useless crap they'll forget once the test is gone...
Ofcourse reading, writing, history etc is important, but they also get a lot of crap that wont stick and isnt necessary. Anyway, thats a whole huge discussion, and right now I'm talking about the situation how it is in Holland, and England might be different.

And yeah, kids getting stuck in school happens in asia as well, and it's still wrong.

I'm saying that here in the west a 25 year old (let alone a 35 year old) might feel embarressed by liking and thus buying and wearing a Hello Kitty backpack, or T-shirt, or whatever, and in Asia most women are NOT embarressed about such a thing.

As it happens I agree with your central point, but when it comes to Asian women there is a larger reason.

Western women wouldn't like so called kiddie things as they also want respect as equals against men. That hasn't yet happened in the Far East where women are still happy (and indeed expect it) for men to be hierarchically higher in the food chain. Japan in particular is a very male orientated society.

Why would they feel that way? Why would they even race for equality when it means dicarding their nature in return (like wanting to wear pink etc)? I thought women in the West were officially equal to men? They are led to believe that they are equal, leading them to give everything to be equal to men, which ultimately makes them unhappy since they have to discard their true nature and in the end completely lose sight of it. Of course you can't say that about every woman living in the West, but unfortunately, this whole superficial human rights stuff they are engaging people with in order to lure them away from the important matters, made society unhappy, especially woman.

What's wrong with an Asian woman being happy? Isn't it preferable for a woman to be a housewife who is truly happy, rather than an unhappy woman who is finally treated equal to a man.

Not equal to a man doesn't mean lower or higher, better or worse than a man, but simply different. Now don't tell me a man and a woman are the same.

In Asia Hello Kitty is a big brand and it caters to more than one generation because it's an accepted trend. Hello Kitty certain isn't alone in this, there is the 'kawai' trend as a whole. This may not have a direct Western paralell, which is not surprising, but it certainly isn't about being expressive, it's just image and part of an acceptable trend for unmarried women. And of these it is but one of many trends and images that dominate Asia. Have you forgotten how common cosmetic surgery is in the region, especially in Korea? And have you not noticed just how dominant all trends and fasions are? How is that expression? It's not, fitting in is all.
What Brad says is quite true, women are made subject, as such what they do is less important until they are married off.

I won't even touch this, stick to your happy little ideal of all women being cheerful housewives in a 50''s TV commercial world.

I agree with LD on the matter.
Nothing sexist about it. But I can see why some people would want to see it as sexist or something like that.

1st of all he's 100% right. Men and women are NOT the same, and shouldnt be treated the same. A woman shouldnt have to be treated like a man in order to be accepted and respected, just like a man shouldnt have to start behaving like a woman when he decided he wants to be a stay-at-home guy who takes care of the household and kids.

Now, men and women ARE equal, when it comes to rights and opportunities, at least, that's the ideal situation.
However, what LD is saying, is what use is it to give up your own true personality, just so you can fit into a certain kind of expectation of people who wanna see you as strong, tough, no BS, etc... !?
If you're a woman and you want to be the boss of a company, AND you like wearing a Hello Kitty watch and pink dresses, why shouldnt that be possible?
I'm not saying all women like to wear pink dresses btw, but just an extreme example.

So LD is saying that you shouldnt have to give up who you are just so you can be what you want to be, careerwise. Which is very much demanded in western society for higher positions.

If you truly want to respect women, and give them equal opportunities etc, you should also accept the differences between men and women, and embrace and welcome those differences as a plus, instead of a negative.

Come one, it's just the same in Asia, anywhere in fact. To exceed in a career you very much have to "fit in", unless you're the special type who manages not to.

Physicality aside what are they? I would imagine some men like girlie products too.

Men and women are different yes - whether women will be equal to men... hmm. I don't know.

I think men are catching up in all sorts of ways...

:D j/k.

No seriously, the "a happy woman's place is in the home" post is complete arse gravy. Where did that come from? Men and women should be treated equally and with respect - true equality, when it comes to opportunities and rights. Maybe the Asian woman is "happy" in the home as she doesnt know any different?! I doubt she's truly happy.

Men and women are different, of course. If they weren't sex would be really weird. Being happy isn't about any individual ideal, it's an individual's ideal that matters. That goes for both genders. Be true to yourself and you'll be happy.

The problem with some people here is that as soon as someone opposes an ideal that has been drummed into them for years, they start ridiculing that someone and in my case, brad even calls me a sexist misogynist.

Fuck you, brad! You are really starting to piss me off. Where in my post have I written anything hinting that I hate women?

Why should I continue putting up with you arsehole calling me whatever you like and whenever you like. What do we have so far? Homophobic, sexist, misogynist?

The main problem here is that some members cant, or plainly refuse, to read, or read what they wanna read, to start shit.
Brad being a very good example of that.
