Name your Top 3 or 5 Thai Martial Arts/Action Films!

Post by bradavon »

With the recent influx of examples I figured we could start a thread to try and keep a track of them and to name our favourites.

I've only seen one so it's easy:

1. Ong-Bak - I thought it was overrated but it wins by default :D

I do have TYG and Born to Fight (2004) to see soon.

What are yours? What are the Thai Martial Arts Film you're most looking forward to seeing?

Top 2
1. Tom Yum Goong
2. Tabunfire

The rest I've seen (Ong Bak and Born to Fight) are not good enough to be on a top list.

EDIT: forgot Bangkok Dangerous (non-martial arts action). Doesn't matter, though, as it isn't any good.

I've not heard of Tabunfire before. It's good, then? It looks like it has a decent DVD:

It's known by "Dynamite Warrior" in America. I cannot find it on eThaiCD under any of it's names. It's interesting you preferred TYG to Ong-Bak, sorry I forget why you said you preferred it.

Is Bangkok Dangerous an action film?

Top 3:

Bang Rajan
Ong Bak
Born To Fight

Warrior King, Suriyothai to see soon :)

I say BR first because although OB has awesome action it doesnt have much plot but BR has a better story with characters you care for :)

BR not NR right?

Is Bang Rajan an action film? It doesn't look like one.

Suriyothai isn't an action film, so I didn't include it. It's an Historical Epic, it does have action though.

My Tabunfire comments are somewhere in the seen thread... here

Cannibalism, black magic, vertically limited warriors (midgets), huge moustache, muay thai (with some wire work this time)... Tabunfire is a high kicking camp dream come true. Combining off-the-wall story elements and quality action and mixing the soup with virgin blood this a strong candidate for the best action movie of the year.

TYG is better than Ong Bak because the action is better and the film moves notably more fluently. And it doesn't show every cool move thrice.

It's an assassin action drama by the Pang Bros. Gunplay, no martial arts. Features one good scene (the ABT part)

I guess Bangkok Dangerous is an action film then.

I hate it when they show the same action scene again and again. I saw it the first time!

Oops, just edited my post. :D
OK, Bang Rajan isnt all out action, its an epic drama with some battle scenes, but I couldnt think of any other Thai films.

Thanks.

I thought I'd ask so we don't go off on a tangent mentioning any old Thai film.

I thought "Bangkok Dangerous" was a very good film.

I guess we are all gonna agree mostly on the action films. Hence, I am going to name other great Thai films I have seen.

Jan Dara
Last Life in the Universe (probably the best overall non-action Thai film I have seen)
6ixtynin9
Monrak Transistor

Thanks but I was really interested in Martial Arts or Action films as there seems to be a sudden influx of them and it's harder to know which are the "ones worth seeing". It's hard to agree on which ones are the best if we don't know what they are ;)

Is Jan Dara any good? I once had it on VHS (from DVD) but never got around to seeing it. All the talk was over the nudity, other than it being any good.

I heat Last Life in the Universe is very good. It was up for several awards in UK Film Award shows. I once had it on Thai DVD but sold it on during my clear out. The Thai DVD isn't that hot anyway.

Irrespective of that, it's a very good drama on its own with very good actors.

Sawadee Krup back at you.

Is Shutter good then? It looks so average but everyone whose seen it, raves about it. It has a decent UK and I think American DVD.

I was hoping you'd be able to come up with other examples of decent Thai Martial Arts films? You seem to have seen a fair few, more than most anyway.

Kop Khun Krup.
