I got the DVD a couple of days ago and watched it tonight - yes the packaging is quite nice, with a pretty solid glossy photobook.
The movie itself, I thought was good, but not brilliant - the story was very interesting, and the characters played their parts very well - though I agree with a review I just read in that they were really just playing their stereotyped roles anyways!
It is an epic war movie, with a couple of big war fight scenes including a fair bit of blood and lopped limbs, but there is some very good interplay between the characters. It remained interesting throughout, and there were a few scenes that were excellent (though I can't specifically remember them heh). The underlying storyline was nicely complex at times, but it was still easy to follow and enjoy. A fairly sombre tale, as quite often the norm with Chinese movies though!
Thus endeth my brief review - definitely not a kung fu movie (though there were some scenes with some martial arts), but a well paced epic war action/drama that's well worth giving a look.

i thought it was overley melodramatic with uninteresting, poorly developed characters and it also seemed rushed.in fact despite being over 2hrs it felt like it should've been longer. it's not a bad film, just disappointing.i gave it 2.5/5 in the review thread. i liked Hero, didn't like Flying Daggers and haven't seen Golden Flower.

Thanks. I will pick it up but not yet.
This is now also out on 2 Disc English subtitled DTS Thai DVD:
$12.50 Delivered - http://www.ethaicd.com/show.php?pid=36831
$14.40 Delivered - http://www.thaicdexpress.com/artist.asp?cdid=DVA0001103
$12.50/£6.21 is much cheaper than the HK DVD. Thai CD Express says it's Letterbox. I suspect that just means it's Widescreen but I'll wait to hear to be sure.

I thought it was great, especially Jet Li who pulled things off flawlessly!
here's a review I wrote at HKMDB: http://hkmdb.com/db/reviews/show_review.mhtml?id=13796
