EARTHQUAKE?!

Post by gasteropod »

A few minutes ago I experienced my first earthquake, I can't believe it, I'm still shaking. I'm talking to people online and it hit them in Sheffield, Hull, and apparently London as well, wtf, since when are they country-wide???

Crikey. How extreme was it?

It's fine here in the South West. My kitchen shakes once a week, whenever someone puts on the washing machine below me. My bedroom shakes even more regularly.

Earthquakes are an interesting experience. They used to happen periodically in the city where I was born.

Earth tremor felt across England

People from across large parts of England have reported an earth tremor.
The BBC has received calls from people in Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Manchester, Berkshire and the West Midlands about a "quake".

The tremor could be felt in central Birmingham at about 0100 GMT but it is unclear if it has caused any damage.

The West Midlands was hit by an earthquake in 2002 in the Dudley area that reached 5.0 on the Richter scale and caused damage to homes.

Thankfully they're super rare in the UK. Flooding is our only serious natural disaster we need to really worry about.

The US Geographical Survey's website reported a quake of the magnitude of 4.7 and said the epicentre was 30 miles (50km) south of Kingston-upon-Hull.

Jemma Harrison, 22, in Bury, Greater Manchester, said: "It was really bad. I was fast asleep and woke up and the room was shaking and there was a loud bang and alarms were going off."

Natasha Cavey, in Tipton in the West Midlands, said: "All my cupboard doors flew open and the whole house shook, it was unreal. I can't believe it."

It's now being reported as 5.1 on the Richter scale. It's weird seeing it say 'near Grimsby' since that's where I live, lol.

Earthquake hits much of England

The biggest earthquake for nearly 20 years has been felt across large parts of England.

People from as far afield as London, Newcastle, Birmingham, Manchester, East Anglia and Yorkshire felt the tremor.

It struck at about 0100 GMT and lasted for nearly 10 seconds but it is unclear if it has caused any damage.

The British Geological Survey said it believed the quake was of the magnitude of 5.1 and said the epicentre was close to Grimsby in north-east Lincolnshire.

A spokesman said it was the biggest earthquake to hit England since 1990 and could be of a level to cause minor damage to buildings.

The West Midlands was hit by an earthquake in 2002 in the Dudley area that reached a magnitude of 5.0 and caused damage to homes.

And last year an earthquake measuring 4.3 hit Folkstone in Kent, causing widespread damage.

It was very strong, I felt the whole room moving

'Biggest quake of my life'

Natasha Cavey, in Tipton in the West Midlands, said: "All my cupboard doors flew open and the whole house shook, it was unreal. I can't believe it."

David Somerset, 41, from Driffield near Beverley in East Yorkshire, said: "I have never felt one as strong as that one before. I was in my sitting room and the grandfather clock was rattling rather violently.

"It was very strong, I felt the whole room moving."

I live near Dudley, but was in Birmingham at the time of the last 5.0 quake in 2002. I was home for this one though, I thought the next door neighbours were going at it again for half a sec when it started! :D

I felt it too, wondered what it was at first. I'm about an hour north of Leeds.
