Fair enough. I didn't know. I've never heard Maggie Cheung actually pronounced and the trailers for Zhang Ziyi are all Western so that may not help.

I didn't know Zhang and Cheung were the same. Is Cheung Cantonese? Speaking of the lovely Zhang Ziyi she sure gets around:

Maggie Cheung is pronounced Maggie Jung (as in "jungle").
And since Zhang is the mandarin spelling of Cheung, I thought that might be right.
For Maggie Cheung it's Jerng (with almost silent 'r')

The problem with Zhang is the way it's pronounced actually sounds like 'Jong' 'Jung' or 'Jang' depending on how YOU pronounce those words.

Listen here: http://www.ctcfl.ox.ac.uk/Sound%20files/zhang1.wav

Hearing it again makes me think (from my perspective) 'Jang' is the most accurate romanization.

Here's a useful guide:

Sorry guys but I hear a Z not J sound. As in Zang not Jung Yiyi. I'm specifically talking about an English pronunciation, not a Chinese pronunciation which interests me not.

It's the same when I hear Thai pronunciation. I'm interested in how I'd pronounce it if it it was an English word, that's how it makes sense to me.

Funny the last time I checked subtitles didn't help much in this respect

We all don't read "The Mandarin and Cantonese Encyclopaedia" of the world.

Yeah it's a Z-sound, or a TS-sound.
Tsang Tsi-yi.

I wonder is she's met Edison yet.

Funny, last time I checked a 5 year old could tell the difference between a Mandarin name and Canto name once they've had enough exposure to various examples. I'm more shocked that Grim didn't know the difference though, it was a given you wouldn't know because you're an ignorant dipshit.

I see the personal insults have start up again Shingster  , you show so much intelligence and maturity throwing out under hand insults like that.

Just because you're an expert it doesn't mean most people are. I doubt many 5 year olds (who aren't Chinese) could tell the difference.

Are you deaf? That doesn't sound in the slightest like a 'Z' sound(!)

'Ch' fair enough, as the 'J' and 'Ch' sounds are near enough interchangable.

But 'Z'? No way.

Call her ZANG ZEE YEE if you wish - but you're wrong.

The 'Ts' in Cantonese sounds like 'Ch'.

Tsang is like Chang (if you had a slight lisp).

I'm talking about TS how we, in England and Holland, would pronounce it.

Tsang Tsee-Yee. Or very maybe Dsang Zee Yee, because the T isnt as heavily pronounced as a hard T, but more as a softer T.

We've just wasted 3 pages trying to guess how a chick's name should be pronounced.
How empty are our lives?
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

There's a 'J' sound in Yes? Since when?
No, not like Jason. 'J' so that it almost sounds like 'Ch'.
Tzuh!? Maybe. Perhaps in mandarin, but probably not in cantonese.
In Cantonese it would be different, of course.

Roughly 'Jerng Jee Yee'

Well... in holland, our J's are pretty soft. My name is Jeroen, but if I would pronounce it, you guys would hear Ye (as in yeah)-Roon :) So when I say soft J, I mean a Y ;) , so to me, it's a bit confusing when people say it's spoken with a J, while it's a J as in Jason as apposed to a J as in Jeroen (Yeah-Roon)

To us all Dutch people sound like Paul Verhoeven.
That cant be good. :D

Luckily, I'm pretty good with accents, so I would probably be able to fake an american accent, thus disguising my own accent.
I can also do eastern-european accents and stuff, which I used sometimes to trick classmates about me not actually being from Holland :P

Nope. My eyesight used to be very poor but dead I am not.

I don't hear a CH or J sound but a Z sound. I did say I'm basing this on Western Trailers remember.

Lol. I see. In that case no.

Not 'J' as in the Dutch 'J'.

'J' as in almost-like 'Ch' (and I assume for Brits and Dutch that's the same).

I can do a reasonable American accent. Could fool any European but maybe not an actual American. Not sure I could narrow my accent down to a specific state. Maybe Noo Yawk but that's about it - if that. East European? Forget it.
