Seen Ong-bak? Now watch Born to Fight

Post by BiscLimpkit »

This film is unbelievable. Director Panna Rittikrai provided the action segments in the excellent Ong-Bak, now he helms his second title behind The Bodyguard.

The stunts here are bigger, better and more painful. Usually action movies have like what... 5 minutes of martial arts at a time? The fantastic Crazy 88 fight scene in Kill Bill was around 4 minutes.

Well imagine a film with pretty much non-stop action, explosions, martial arts, blood and pain. That's what Born to Fight is all about. The main 'fight' lasts around 45 minutes - this is an action epic that is on a bigger scale than Chan's Police Story. The stunts are incredible and leave you with a "wohoah man that's gotta hurt" feeling. Just check the outtakes at the end to see what I'm talking about.

It is a fantastic film, with a powerful storyline and ironically, anti-violence message. Some of the scenes are not pleasant to watch and are surprisingly dark. So be careful.

This film is seriously an action fan's wet dream. It's good to see some Muay Thai/John Woo-esque gun ballet hybrid.

This doesn't have Tony Ja right? How does the main character compare?

45Mins OMG on the one hand that's good but on another bad, there can't be much room left for a story.

Is there an English subbed DVD? I believe Optimum Asia are bringing this to the UK.

I agree  This film rocks if you like action.
You didn't see it with english subs did you? I have the un-subbed Thai dvd and really enjoyed watching it as it was very easy to follow...and most of it was just ass kicking anyway :D

Fight-wise, the actors of "Born to Fight" do not reach the same level as Tony Jaa, especially considering from what we can see in the new trailer of "Tom Yum Goong".

But stunt-wise, they probably beat anything I have seen before. Damn those truck scenes! How the hell did they do that?

There is also a wonderful action sequence running for about 1 - 2 minutes without a cut, in which the guy kicks, punches, throws a grenade and avoids other enemies as well. Awesome stuff.

Also, there is an ultra-violent slaughtering-a-village scene.

Is Thailand taking over from HK as king of martial arts action?!?

Danke

WOW I just watched that trailer. Do any international studios have this yet or non-Thai Asian studios?

Was it shot in Thailand? That doesn't look like BKK in the background.

Tony Jaa really reminds me of a young Jackie Chan or Jet Li. I wouldn't be surprised if we see him in Hollywood sometime over the next 5 years. It would be great if he teamed up with a Hong Kongese, Japanese or Korean film company.

It's great to see Thailand finally being recognised on the international map. I had a feeling it would one day.

"Born to Fight" is owned by Momentum Asia in the UK which should mean uncut, anamorphic, DTS + Extras. Shown here:

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=13450

It was meant to be out on the 23rd of May 2005 but then again "The Bodyguard" (also starring a cameo from Tony Jaa) was supposed to be out in July and "Silver Hawk" was due in June both of which are coming in September.

Play has it pencilled in for the 12th of September 2005:

Premier Asia have it and as it looks, they will call it "Thai Breaker".

Yes, it was shot in Thailand, but also partly in Australia.
I wouldn't be surprised if we see him in Hollywood sometime over the next 5 years.
I hope not.

I thought Thai Breaker was just the title they gave to the news piece on the film, not the actual film??? Thai Breaker is an awful title (not to mention a groanworthy pun).

Hoops... you're absolutely right grim. Here is the news:
Thai Breaker
We are delighted to announce that we have acquired the Rights to the hot new action-extravaganza, Tom Yum Goong, starring Thai boxing sensation, Tony Jaa. The movie is currently filming in Australia, and the advance footage looks absolutely amazing! The title will follow our 2005 release of Tony’s breakthrough project, Ong Bak. Both coming soon on Premier Asia!

Thing is Thai films are still not exactly going as wel as they could, they dont seem to be pushing them for all there worth :( Ong Bak kind of changed that as it has been done justice I say :) but the other films still are not getting a full push yet, including the ones mentioned here.

I hope to see more Thai films, but the problem is so far Only action films seem to be coming out and being put in the light for us, the odd other film seems to be mentioned, but its mainly action so far, so quite limited.

Any "Born to Fight" trailers out there?

It's a "very" young film business. Korean films are anomaly in how fast they took off.

Give it time.

There are some excellent non-action films:

1. Bang-rajan - Has had an international release
2. Suriyothai - Has an R1 release and is known outside of Thailand
3. Nang Nak - This isn't wildly known outside of Thailand (I only know of a crap HK DVD and a decentish Thai DVD both have English subs)

Like I said give it time. The problem is many don't transport outside of Thailand very well at all.

Action Martial Arts films export very well but Thailand's infatuations with Katoy's (transsexuals and transvestites) doesn't even export into Asia let alone the west.

I've visited Thailand many times and know the culture well and I don't even really like said films (many of which are serious). A newbie doesn't have a chance, or wouldn't want to give it a chance.

There are fansubs going around on the web so I manged to play it on top of the DVD. But as mentioned, there's so much ass kicking, nobody has time to talk.

Check out the trailer (and awesome screen grab) here:

Nice one cheers Bisc.

What software did you use to overlay the subs?

It's one of those things that I can just see being useful.

Why not just wait for a real dvd? why suffer fan subs at all?

I just find waiting for a real dvd the best way, I dont care and never will care for crappy fan subs or pirates or unsubbed dvds of any kind.

I want my 1st viewing of every film to be as good as it gets., thats why I will wait til the best is out to buy.

2. Suriyothai - Has an R1 release and is known outside of Thailandversion is out on dvd.

Both these film have been advertised as Action and both pretty much disaperared without a trace everywhere, so not the best examples to list :D I am talking about films which have hit the Big Time like well only Ong Bak so far, give it some time I guess. Either they will make more good ones to sell, or they wont.

Where did I say I wasn't?

Fansubs are only a few Kb so I may as well have them "in case" I need them in future. Fansubs have proved very useful for say "Fist of Legend".

You stick with your English dubbed "Fist of Legend" or wait 1-2 years to see Ong-Bak (both of which with English subs) :D

Sure I agree but sometimes you have no choice.

OMG what idiot told you Suriyothai was an action film? OMG it's far from it. It's an epic story of the life of Queen Suriyothai.

It is long, it is complicated and it is confusing, really it relies on you already being familiar with the story, which you can't really complain to much at as it was never originally intended for anyone else other than the Thai market.

I was confused (as I like all westener's didn't know the back story). It's the sort of film that needs two viewings, maybe one day I'll return to it. I own the "only" DVD worth owning. The Thai theatrical cut at 180 mins, which is unfortunately non-anamorphic 1.78:1 but has DTS and English subs.

It doesn't help by the fact the R1 (i.e - only international version) is chopped by something like 50 minutes. If anything the original cut should've been longer (oh wait it is in a 5 hour cut but no English subs).

Besides to compare Ong-Bak with Suriyothai is very unfair. Ong-bak already has a head start before it's left paper, it's an all out action film and those sell very well abroad.

I've not seen Bang-rajan so can't really comment but you should check out "Nang-Nak" I reckon you'd like it. Tis a very good little Thai ghost story that would also do well internationally if it were not an old film so has been forgotten about.

p.s - I thought you watched films based on your merit not word of mouth? Hmmm.

I was basing the films on what I had seen for them :) they were pretty much trailered and advertised as action, and as Suriyothai is cut soo badly I probibly will never see it :( a few minutes I dont mind maybe, but come on they take te pee on some :)

I am going to get lots of Thai films as they are slowly filtering thru ionto the more mainstream cinema and hey the dvds are coming thick and fast at the end of this year all over the world :)

It has action such as big battles with elephants but isn't an action film no way.

The Thai Theatrical cut isn't cut. Only the R1 is cut aka - The Francis Ford Coppola cut ( no seriously :D , well unofficially). Why do prolific director's who've created masterpieces fuck up other director's work? Because their careers are over I guess.

They later brought an extended 5 hour cut out but that doesn't mean the theatrical cut (which is director approved) is cut. It's such a pity the extended cut never got released with English subs. Be careful if you do get it though as the R1 cut is also available from a Thai studio in Thailand. Why a Thai would ever want it is beyond me, with 2 other DVDs out there both much longer cuts.

Have any better quality trailers been released? That one LD posted on page 1 is now dead anyway.

I can't wait for the 24th of October. I hope Momentum Asia stick to that date, it's already been delayed twice (May and September).

£10.99 from DVD Popcorn:
