Fist of Legend: Dragon Dynasty

Post by thelostdragon »

In one of his latest blog entries, Bey talks about how he met Gordon Chan and how he promised him to record a commentary track with him.

Good to hear. I don't mind delays if it means a better product overall. Hope the DVD is worth the wait

Expectations are so high for this one there's no way it's going to please everyone, it's just not going to happen. Someone will find a fault with it.

As it happens I'm looking forward to Bodyguard from Beijing more. I prefer that one.

Like Fist of Legend that has no decent version period either. I used to own some USA DVD and boy it sucked. It was definitely a VCD plonked on a DVD. I'm sure it even went black in the middle of the film for a few seconds. Obviously it was better than that ghastly USA dubbed DVD though.

Serves you right for buying boots, LOL

All the DVD needs to do is get right for me is

OAR, Anamorphic - NO stretching of the image
Original Cantonese audio
Good subtitles

Be nice if the old Dimension version was on as an extra - call me mad but I like the music in it!

Well I didn't know it was a bootleg :D . I didn't pay much for it, so it was cool and it did allow me to see it, so for that it was worth it. I also bought it back in the day when I was starting to get into DVD.

If I hadn't bought it it would've been likely I'd still not have seen it. I've no problem buying bootlegs as long as I'm not being ripped off.

Would Cantonese DD5.1 do then? :D . Maybe a nice Fortune Star DTS remix too? ;)

I'll hold you to that rather sparse "must have" list when DD release a really pink Jet Li in Fist of Legend :D

That's never going to happen. I'd prefer the second disc was taken with extras myself.

Well, they'll probably an English version of some description. Don't know if Golden Harvest or whoever did one back in the day

Oh yeah, NO pinkifying

Cantonese 5.1 - hmm, I can't recall if this was a stereo film to begin with. HK films went stereo in 1994 I think. I don't mind remixes if they don't change the original audio too much, but the FS ones are absolutely wretched

If they can't get any real extras other than a commentary, I wouldn't mind if they included the Dimension cut on a second disc.

Fist of Legend was mono.

HK cinema was still using mono upto the millenium, lol. They almost jumped straight to Dolby Digital, largely bypassing Stereo.

Johnnie To's big-budget 'Lifeline' (1996) was mono (which really surprised me) for example.

If the DD disc is half as good as the HK Vidéo disc, then it will be awesome. :D

I paid a shitload for my World Video DVD. Allegedly a port of the Mei Ah Laserdisc, actually.

Yes, export versions of 'Bodyguard', 'Tai Chi Master' and 'Fist Of Legend' exist (all available on Indian VCDs + the latter film also on a Spanish DVD allegedly complete, whilst the other two movies are seemingly cut compared to the counterpart HK version). Whether DD will use them, or even gain access is another question.

I found 'Bodyguard's Dimension music is far too bland orchestral. Just a cheap score that'll do the job. As much as it's unnatural with all the stops, they do good with the lip-syncing.

The ocassional dip into Dolby mixes took place (King Of Beggars, The bride With White Hair, Insanity, Victory) but you're right, it took long before it all was standard.
