The Fong Sai-Yuk scenes ?
*Checking...*
Looked like typical unrestored HK Vidéo material.
Better than any HK DVD, but also contrast-boosted and soft.
I'm sure they'll release them one day.

Dionnet (head of Asian Star) always manages to sneak in a few obscure titles in each wave. He makes most of his money on stuff like Seven Swords and SPL, this way he can afford to release the films he really likes (World without Thieves, Eternal Combat, Juliet in Love, Wicked City, Magic Crane, Spy Game, etc...)

Shinobi (HD-DVD) has been delayed.
Apparently, the disc is incompatible with 60% of all HD-DVD Players.
That's pretty poor, ain't it ?
Too bad. I was thinking of buying it.
Not for the disc (I don't even have HD), but for the french cover.
Sooo pretty...

HK Vidéo is releasing Prison on Fire 1 & 2 !
Coming to a store near you on January 15th.
Temporary cover, as usual.
How great is this ?
First A Better Tomorrow, then A Chinese Ghost Story and now this.

Anybody know anything about Cine Malta? I was looking at their website and at least some of the Masumura dvds stated the same running times as the R1 discs. Another NTSC to PAL company perhaps?
What about other French companies? Mad Asia's Kitamura dvds at least are conversions, except the normal cut of Versus which I believe is a port of the old French disc. Pathe's (the discs begin with Asian Star logo) Female Prisoner Scorpion films are also all conversions (although they didn't look bad to me), except Jailhouse 41, which obviously comes from the same print as the old Studio Canal disc (but is newly remastered and burnt in subs removed... still cut though).

Shinobi is a "pretty poor" film anyway, unless you have a fetish for crap CGI, half ass melodrama and Tak Sakaguchi's lack of acting. Certainly not something that I'd even consider buying on HD disc.
The anime series Basilisk (based on the same story) is much much better. The melodrama and love tragedy elements are all there, except you've got plenty of gore, tits and decent action choreography to make the ride a lot more enjoyable.
Don't you mean Joe Odagiri ? I don't remember seeing Sakaguchi in Shinobi...
I've watched several episodes of Basilisk (on your recommendation) and didn't like it at all.
Huge fan of the new japanese wave, though (Azumi 1 & 2, Shinobi, Dororo, etc...)
Sorry, Hung. Don't know anything about Ciné Malta. Haven't even heard of them.

Well, thanks anyway, Tom. I had some interest for the company because they'll be releasing some Nikkatsu Roman films in the future... but maybe I shouldn't get my hopes up so high if they're just gonna do conversions. It's not so important either, those films are all out on R2J, I think.
And I'm in love with Odagiri. The cutest guy since Leslie Cheung.
Wasn't it his sleeves that he was using? In the anime the same character uses wires, iirc he does in the film as well, but he also has the sleeve thing.
Is this HK Video at all? Or is it the bastard sister company (or whatever the relation was, I keep forgetting) that released those Jackie and Sammo films?
Er, it's no bastard company, Metropolitan is behind HK too. HK is a label owned by that company. The difference is that anything with the HK inprint means the project/DVD/transfert was supervised by director Christophe Gans, or made under his control and watchful eye, whereas any other release of Hong Kong or japanese films with just the Metropolitan inprint may not.
HK Vidéo's limited Chinese Ghost Story boxset is out-of-print already.
And Asia-Diffusion are now saying that the same thing is going to happen to the A Better Tomorrow boxset.
If you want one, you'd better be quick.

5000 or 10 000 would be my guess.
For a 50€ boxset that hasn't even been released yet (April 15th for ABT), that's gotta be some kind of record.
Out-of-print even before it hits the shelves.

Le Protecteur is Half a Loaf of Kung-Fu. Le retour du Chinois is The Protector. L'irrésistible is Spiritual Kung-Fu. Soif de Justice is Wheels on Meals.
The Protector DVD features both the US and the HK cut of the film.
Wheels on Meals should feature a FS print (hopefully not pinkified).
No english subs, of course.

well, Fortune Star print was partly extended (with some more but not all of deletions/extensions available as extras) but this is confirmed as the full Taiwan version?
