Name me your Top 3 emotionally charged Animation on DVD?

Post by bradavon »

With English subtitles.

I think I've asked this before but it was such a long time ago.

I saw Spirited Away again recently and man it's a super film. The first time I saw it I was so knackered I don't know why I bothered but on a second viewing I can see why it's so loved. Not only is the animation ace it has so much raw power and emotion too.

No kids films like Lion King though please, as great as Lion King is I'm interested in Adult films. As the title says, cheers.

I think Metropolis is quite emotional.

Grave of the Fireflies is supposed to be, but I have not seen it.

Thanks guys.

I think "Grave of the Fireflies" is the film Bisc mentioned last time when I said anime can't show real emotion. I still believe you cannot convey facial emotions but you can emotions overall.

Emotionally charged...

Yep, Grave of the Fireflies.
You also might wanna try Pompoko, by the same director. Loads of emotion there, as well.
Miyazaki's Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa are quite powerful too.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Voices of a Distant Star
Mind Game
Millenium Actress

I don't see much emotion in Spirited Away personally, Mononoke has loads more.

Nope not just Asian. I deliberately removed Asian from the thread title.

I put it in the Asian forum as (correct me if I'm wrong) but "most" non-kids animation is Asian.

Oh, I totally forgot about "Jin-Roh". Awesome film with a super emotional soundtrack.

It's about revolutionaries in Tokyo who are violently fighting against the regime. At the same time there is a power struggle within the police. The lead character, a cop, gets caught in the crossfire when he finds sympathy for the revolutionaries after he witnesses the suicide attack of a very young girl. He also falls in love with the girl's older sister. Sounds a little "hmpf", but is really touching.

Just watched it again today, this time on BD. Wouldn't call it emotionally charged per se but it has real atmosphere and feeling, excellent film.

Mushishi has some very emotional episodes. They are all stand-alone eps btw, so you can easily watch them out of order or just give a few of them a try.

Heavy Metal has some really impressive moments, not to mention a killer soundtrack and lots of naked women!

And some of the Disney films, in particular Beauty And The Beast and Hunchback of Notre Dame, have moments that rival the finest in live action cinema

Luckily it appears most people don't agree with you, as everything I've read on the internet is as positive as I feel about the film :)
