With BD+ being effectively uncrackable and region coding BD does not best please me any more.

I had a feeling this would happen....

Let's hope Warners at least stay Region-Free.

Nothing is uncrackable... it just takes longer. :D

Funny, I was just saying to my mate that just recently Blu-ray seems to be pissing all over HD-DVD, and all the best upcoming titles are on Blu-ray. I'm glad I made the decision to choose Blu-ray last summer :)

I'm glad I'm neutral but am slightly pissed because I have more HD-DVDs than Blu-rays. I guess I'm gonna have to cut down my HD-DVD purchases and only buy Warner titles on Blu-ray.

I do feel sorry for Toshiba, and it sounds like they know the end is nigh for their format. I think Toshiba are a much more decent company than Sony.

My Dad can't stand Sony. He thinks they're arrogant (and I'm sure he's right). Whilst Toshiba have went out their way to give the consumer good value on HD machines, Sony have summed up their approach with two words: fuck and you. I don't like their elitist attitude either, but I did suspect they would ultimately win the war this time round. I feel somewhat for Toshiba and the people who have spent a lot of money on what may soon be a moribund format.

This is wicked news and even bigger than Paramount going HD-DVD. Warner are easily the best HD studio out there. It better not mean Warner start using Regional Coding though!

It sounds like Warner are as annoyed with two formats as everyone else. It would be dumb if in 12 months Paramount switch to BD. I bet they do. This year is going to be "very" interesting as far as HD is concerned. The big question is:

How much longer will Universal hold on to HD-DVD?

Until they do switch for me anyway it's still a moot point.
Markgway wrote:Nothing is uncrackable... it just takes longer. :D
If anything it will be cracked sooner. There are already players out that have been hacked to support RA and RB (who cares about RC).

I hope this news gives the hardware guys a push to get BD Profile 1.1 out there more quickly!

And Panasonic, Pioneer, LG, Samsung are they not decent too? All are big BD supporters and only recently have LG/Samsung dipped into HD-DVD. Meh Sony make decent hardware. I don't give a monkeys about the rest.

Once Profile 1.1 is out properly (which will come) and BD Player prices come down (which will also come) there will be no advantage to HD-DVD period.

I take your point except no one forced Toshiba and Microsoft to create such a ridiculous situation we should never of had in the first place.

People forget Sony are by far alone in the BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association). It's Toshiba who're the bastards for going it alone in my opinion. If Sony were the outsiders then fine but the simple truth is they're not.

BD+ is tough, it won't be cracked but perhaps there is a workaround.

and Brad is outed as a blu-ray fanboy  if you dislike hd-dvd that much why support it by buying discs for your combo machine? how anyone would be happy to see a region coded format win over a region free one is beyond me.and as for having a go at toshiba you do realise hd-dvd is the spec developed and approved by the big companies,it was actually sony who went native with blu-ray.

Sony are arseholes and bullies. they closed down lik-sang in 2006 and stopped play-asia shipping games to europe despite the games being region-free. however i applaud them for using blu-ray in their ps3.it's won them this war, first time sony's won anything. how many unreliable standalone players are out there compared to ps3's?

Really? A and B? That sounds ideal. If I could get an A/B machine (UK spec) for about £200 I'd probably go for it (I think it's best to wait for all the Profile updates before running out and laying down cash- I still don't even have the HDTV yet. But hopefully this year a must have bargain will pop up).
And Panasonic, Pioneer, LG, Samsung are they not decent too? All are big BD supporters and only recently have LG/Samsung dipped into HD-DVD. Meh Sony make decent hardware. I don't give a monkeys about the rest.
I think Gasterpod is just referring to Toshiba's more consumer friendly attitude compared to Sony (who in spite of the BD support are not well liked). No one really enjoys seeing a good format (like HD-DVD) fail. If they'd been compatible from the start this wouldn't have happened.
Once Profile 1.1 is out properly (which will come) and BD Player prices come down (which will also come) there will be no advantage to HD-DVD period.
I wouldn't hold my breath for BD players to come down in price (at least not routinely). If Sony and co have the market to themselves there's little insentive to make mass reductions. Sony seem quite happy for BD to remain an elitist format (ala Laserdisc- and that's what this will be: the new LD).
I take your point except no one forced Toshiba and Microsoft to create such a ridiculous situation we should never of had in the first place.
You can say the same about Sony (who are probably still smarting over losing the DVD debate) and desperate to get one over on their biggest rivals.
People forget Sony are by far alone in the BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association). It's Toshiba who're the bastards for going it alone in my opinion. If Sony were the outsiders then fine but the simple truth is they're not.
You mean far FROM alone? If I were Toshiba I would've seen the writing on the wall in advance but they won DVD and figured maybe they could do it again. I mean, HD-DVD did (does) have a lot going for it. It's not like BD is that superior (especially right now).

I don't dislike either format.

I was just pointing out it's Toshiba and Microsoft who're alone against ALL the other companies. It's simply not the other way around. Sony are one part of the BDA and not the only company supporting BD hardware as everyone likes to make out.
saltysam wrote:how anyone would be happy to see a region coded format win over a region free one is beyond me.
Where did I say that? It's likely to be the reality though.
saltysam wrote:and as for having a go at toshiba you do realise hd-dvd is the spec developed and approved by the big companies,it was actually sony who went native with blu-ray.
Yet they all quickly dropped HD-DVD and went to Blu-ray ;)
saltysam wrote:it's won them this war, first time sony's won anything. how many unreliable standalone players are out there compared to ps3's?
Philips and Sony developed CD, the most successful format ever ;) . I believe Sony's BD Players are unreliable too ;)

It's important to put this unreliability in context. We're talking a handful of discs here compared with the thousands out there. Granted not the overall point but it's worth not making it sound like all discs fail.
Markgway wrote:Really? A and B? That sounds ideal.
If you bothered to read the Technology forum you'd know ;) -

https://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/forums/ ... &start=282

It's not really viable for UK owners yet though, but it's a definitely a sign of things to come.
Markgway wrote:If I could get an A/B machine (UK spec) for about £200 I'd probably go for it
It will be 3-5 years before a "decent" BD Player costs that much. The £200 price point is known to be the holy grail of price points and when people really start to buy stuff. There still aren't many Freeview Hard Disk/DVD Recorders for under £200 and that technology has been with us for several years now.

I'm not waiting 3-5 years. I'd say another 6 months and Profile 1.1 will be settled down.
Markgway wrote:I think Gasterpod is just referring to Toshiba's more consumer friendly attitude compared to Sony (who in spite of the BD support are not well liked). No one really enjoys seeing a good format (like HD-DVD) fail. If they'd been compatible from the start this wouldn't have happened.
Agreed Sony are underhand but then so are all the big companies. Even then I seriously doubt Toshiba were thinking of their customers when they went it alone with HD-DVD. How nice of them!

Profile 1.1 aside which will sort itself given time HD-DVD isn't a better format to BD. There isn't much in it. MiniDisc was a good format but still (eventually) failed when the market no longer needed it.

I didn't put any time scale on it. The last time I checked Sony didn't own Pioneer, Panasonic, LG or Samsung ;)

Nope. The last time I checked Sony didn't own Pioneer, Panasonic, LG or Samsung ;)
Markgway wrote:You mean far FROM alone?
Do you mean facist or fascist? :D
Markgway wrote:It's not like BD is that superior (especially right now).
The discs hold much more space (allowing for a choice of PCM and/or Lossless Audio codecs TrueHD/DTS-HD MA) and support the superior BD Java. Which obviously right now is causing problems but in the long term "should" (granted a big should) allow for better features than HD-DVD supports. There are beta 51Gb HD-DVDs but nothing in production.

It's a moot point which is better when both offer 1080p and Lossless audio.

It's far from over.

So Universal, Paramount, all the European and Japanese HD-DVD studios are now gone? Not to mention all the thousands of HD-DVDs out there. It's over, yeah right!

Even if Universal and Paramount eventually go Blu-ray I'd still get a Combo Player. It will take at least another year to re-release all the HD-DVDs into Blu-ray format. HD-DVD isn't going anywhere any time soon.
