'It's A Wonderful Life' polled 'Best Christmas Film Ever'

Updated: 2007-12-27 17:40

The 1940's classic 'It's A Wonderful Life' has been voted as the best Christmas film ever, according to a new poll.

The film, starring James Stewart and Donna Reed, earned the top spot in the HMV poll, beating competition from 'The Snowman' at the second and 'Home Alone' at the third position.

HMV's Charles Fotheringham, said 'It's A Wonderful Life' has all the attributes of being the definitive Christmas film.

"I guess it comes as no surprise that It's A Wonderful Life should have topped the poll so convincingly - it has all the attributes of being the definitive Christmas film, showing that the good in all of us can, ultimately, prevail however dire the circumstances," The Sun quoted Fotheringham, as saying.

"The film is a perennial best seller for us - showing its timeless appeal to different generations of movie fans," he added.

'The Muppet Christmas Carol' finished fourth on the list.

The 1994 remake of 'Miracle On 34th Street', grabbed the fifth position, with its original version made in 1947 coming 10th.

The Top 10 'Best Christmas Films Ever' are:

1. It's A Wonderful Life

2. The Snowman

3. Home Alone

4. The Muppet Christmas Carol

5. Miracle On 34th Street (1994)

6. Santa Claus: The Movie

7. White Christmas

8. Die Hard

9. The Nightmare Before Christmas

10. Miracle On 34th Street (1947)
........................

I know DH is set at Christmas, but is it really a Christmas film? :?
IAWL is a true classic no doubt.

Nightmare before Christmas is far better than the schmaltzy Wonderful Life.i'd hardly call the Snowman a film either,it's only a tv short.

It's A Wonderful Life has been voted best christmas film ever more times ovre the years than I've had Turkey dinners! I'm absolutely stunned the 1994 remake of Miracle on 34th polled so high, it's absolute shit compared to the original!

The Snowman is hands down the best Xmas film ever. It's not just a great Xmas movie it's a great movie. I'll definitely be showing it to my kids when I have some.

Die Hard is cool but is only "just" an Xmas movie. Most Xmas movies are awful though. Santa Claus the movie is fun.

The Snowman is superb but I don't think it counts as a "movie"

What else could you call it though? It's too good to be called a TV Drama etc . . .

It is only 26 minutes but feels like a movie. When is it on this Xmas or did I miss it?

It was on on Xmas Eve, I think :)
I'd just call it a short ;) Otherwise you'd call every TV cartoon a movie :D

You really cannot compare The Snowman to Die Hard. They're just so different. Both are excellent but are so different too.

Fair enough. The Snowman definitely feels more cinematic than most Cartoons. Is it even a cartoon?

Die Hard will never win a poll like this because it's not a Christmas Film. It is not about Christmas or the Christmas feeling, it's just an action film that happens to be set during Christmas.

Well, the Snowman is an animated short, definitely. That sounds better than "cartoon".
I love The Snowman :)

The Long Kiss Goodnight is far better than them all.

Get Carter (2000) remake is also.

Well apart from Die Hard.

The Snowman aint a film, obviously the voters are idiots.

The Long Kiss Goodnight is ace but that's not an Xmas film either. It's not as good as The Snowman.
