Underwater Love (Doyle + Imaoka + Nishimura = Pink Musical)

Post by HungFist »

"It is one of the strangest on-screen combinations in recent days. Shinji Imaoka - one of the acknowledged masters of 'pink' film, a subset of Japanese soft porn - recruited hugely acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Doyle - frequent collaborator of Wong Kar Wai - to shoot a sex fantasy about a young woman who falls in love with a mythical kappa, a turtle like creature with a noted fondness for cucumbers. The creature effects were provided by Tokyo Gore Police director Yoshihiro Nishimura and they had just five days to shoot it. And, oh yes, it's also a song-and-dance musical with original tunes provided by Germany's Stereo Total."

Extracted this into a topic of its own.

Imaoka is quite an interesting pink director. I've seen his film Uncle's Paradise, which is a nice combination of good characters, grainy indie style seaside visuals, and wtf-factor (the film's climax takes place in hell). I missed Tasogare when it played in Helsinki (with Imaoka in person), but The Japan Times critic Mark Schilling wrote "Calling it good for a pink film is like calling Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Monogatari (Tokyo Story) good for a home drama: though hardly a worldwide classic, it transcends its genre." I'd like to see Frong Song, too.

DVD note:
Third Window Film’s UK release is well worth picking up, being native pal for once, and featuring the excellent original soundtrack on CD (limited to 2000 copies)

No specs yet, but I don't see how this could make a better purchase than the Third Window Films edition (native pal, good extras, full soundtrack cd...)
